(Plainville, CT) Arrested in January 2008, Severino Cruz and his brother Enrique Cruz face charges of animal cruelty for alleged neglect and malicious abuse. Reportedly in a rage upon hearing that a 3-year-old pitbull named Baby had bitten his nephew’s arm, Severino Cruz grabbed the dog by her chain, pushed her up against her cage and drilled a series of holes into her skull with a power drill. Baby was euthanized shortly thereafter. The act was discovered by Severino’s brother and nephew when they returned home from the hospital where the boy’s wound had been treated. Upon investigation, police additionally discovered a severely neglected puppy (Baby’s) on the premises – that puppy, which belonged to Enrique Cruz, was seized and put up for adoption. Enrique Cruz is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty while Severino Cruz faces both misdemeanor and felony charges of animal cruelty.
Polite letters to the prosecutor and judge may be sent via the address below – encourage a meaningful sentence upon conviction to include a permanent criminal record, psychological counseling, and an order against future contact with animals for a significant period of time. Also request that any community service orders not be carried out at an animal shelter (it is ALDF’s position that convicted animal abusers have no place around a shelter’s rescued animals or its dedicated, often youthful, volunteers).

Dear Hon Doherty,REF: SeverinoCruz – H17B-CR08-0036590-SEnriqueCruz-H17B – CR08-0036601-SI am writing with regard to the particularly barbaric case of 2 brothers who took it upon themselves to brutally attack a defenseless dog restrained by a chain with a power drill. These two people drilled into the skull of the conscious animal injuring it to the extent that it had to be euthanized shortly after. One can only imagine the suffering of this poor dog in its final moments.Anyone who can inflict such horrific injury and brutality on a living animal has to be extremely disturbed, sick and depraved. There is a proven link between cruelty to animals and abuse to humans which may suggest that these men –in the future could prove not only dangerous to animals but also to other people in the community. For these reasons I am requesting that you recommend the longest possible mandatory sentence, psychological counseling and an order against any future contact with animalsYours Faithfully,
An animal cruelty investigator for Toronto's Humane Society has had his licence suspended following an incident in which a man was left handcuffed to a car while his pet was taken away for medical treatment.
The captive man later claimed to police he was assaulted by members of the public while chained to his car.
The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Thursday it would suspend Tre Smith's investigator's licence, pending an investigation of his actions.
It was on a sweltering July 31 afternoon when Smith rushed to save a Rottweiler named Cyrus, who had been sealed in a parked car that was roasting at temperatures nearing 70 C.
Cruelty investigator Tre Smith was sure the dog was near death and didn't have time to wait for the owners to return. So without hesitating, he broke open the window to reach the limp animal. "I could see through this window and there's a large breed Rottweiler, about 110 pounds, slumped over the back seat with his legs up and a blank stare forward, death stare we call it, foaming from the mouth and he was non-responsive. So I immediately smashed the window and opened the car doors and dragged the dog out and brought it onto the pavement."
When Cyrus's owner returned to his car, the owner was handcuffed to the vehicle and left alone while Cyrus was taken away for treatment. Smith said "He (the suspect) was threatening and abusive and for my own safety, the safety of others around me and for the safety of Cyrus I needed to tend to Cyrus to save his life"
By the time police arrived, the captive man was bleeding, having been allegedly attacked by angry bystanders who witnessed the incident. "The police hadn't got here just yet but they were almost here, and I had to leave because the dog was non-responsive, had stopped breathing and I had to stimulate the dog just to bring him back," he recalled
Smith also has the backing of witness Andrew McGowan.
"He did his job 100%, and I was there for the whole thing," he said.
Smith remains perturbed by the turn his no-win decision has taken. "I'm shocked and stunned and deeply saddened," he told CityNews late Thursday. "I'm like a quarterback that's benched. Like football, a quarterback is essential and investigators are essential to fighting ... abuse against animals."
Trevor Smith remains under suspension. There's no word on how long the process may take to determine when - or if - he'll be able to go back to work. Hugh Coghill Chief inspector of the Toronto SPCA says "Mr. Smith has not been punished, he is simply not going to participate in law enforcement activities until we establish what happened and why at the incident in question. Then, we'll determine if any follow-up action is required on our part"
The dog's owner, Paul Soderholm, is charged with cruelty to an animal and is scheduled to appear in court next month. If found guilty, he could face a $2,000 fine and six months in jail.
We the undersigned urge the Toronto SPCA to reinstate Mr Smith immediately and commend him on his quick thinking that saved a dogs life.

In light of the extremely serious allegations concerning Mr Vicks I am writing to inform you that if you do not rethink using this person in your advertising campaigns I will have to rethink using your products and supporting your company
The charges made against this man are horrifying and in case you are unfamiliar with them include the illegal act of dogfightingas well as hanging and electrocuting the unfortunate dogs that didn’t make the grade
A person who is such an icon to young people should be setting an example, not breaking the law,let alone in such a sick and depraved way
Anyone who can hang or electrocute a living animal and cause such suffering has to be extremely disturbed. Please advise as soon as possible as to your position on this matter

Imagine your dog being pulled from your home by local police and then beaten to death in front of you. There’s only one way to spare your beloved pet: kill your dog yourself (and receive 63 cents from the government!). A horrific choice.
Yet thousands of dog owners in China recently faced such a decision when a county in southwestern China killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered campaign to stop the outbreak of rabies. And now it is about to happen again in the eastern city of Jining, the southern city of Futian and many more cities across China; putting hundreds of thousands of dogs at possible risk.
Sadly, this is not a unique event in a country without animal welfare laws. These types of dog killing campaigns spring up in China frequently, often in reaction to rabies control failures by local governments.
The cold-blooded massacre could have been avoided if the government focused on preventing the disease through vaccination and education. But dog population control in China rests with municipal governments, most of which have no management system to regulate dog ownership and disease prevention.
Many of these dogs died slow, agonizing deaths before the eyes of their owners who are helpless to protect them. Killing dogs that have rightful owners is also a violation of the basic rights of a citizen in China, whose Constitution calls for the protection of personal property, including companion animals.
IFAW has successfully convinced some municipalities in China not to carry out mass dog killing campaigns in the past. China is very sensitive to international pressure on this issue. Please send a letter today to the Chinese Ambassador in your country urging China to immediately stop the inhumane dog culls.
Please also make a contribution to IFAW so that we may continue to push for animal welfare legislation to prevent the cruel treatment of animals in China and around the world. Only animal welfare legislation at the central government level can stop such a cruel event from taking place in China again. Let’s make it happen.
For the animals, Fred O’Regan
P.S.Please forward this email to as many friends as possible. The more people who speak out against the outrageous and unnecessary dog culls in China, the greater the chance we have to stop it from ever happening again.
As you may have read from international news reports, government authorities in Chuxiong in Yunnan province, embarked on a 5-day dog killing campaign between July 25th and July 30th following the deaths of 3 local people from rabies.
Over 50,000 dogs, including pet dogs, were brutally beaten to death, hung or electrocuted.
Initially the government offered dog owners 5rmb (62 US cents) to kill their own dogs, but when this measure failed a special task force was set up to raid suspected homes and kill all dogs found. Only military and police dogs were spared by the slaughter squads.
A second Chinese city planned a mass dog slaughter to contain a rabies outbreak.
Please, send e-mails to the Chinese authorities expressing your outrage at their brutal dog eradication campaign.
Officials in a southwestern Chinese county brutally slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies.
Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot. Killing teams also entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, and then beat the animals to death.Had the government been more attentive and proactive about rabies vaccination, the killings wouldn’t have been necessary. Only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year.
Regardless of culture, the brutal killing of innocent life, human or not, is unacceptable. This must not happen again in the future! It is essential that the Chinese government place an emphasis on widespread rabies vaccination to ensure human health and prevent the unnecessary loss of animal life.
Sign this petition to call on the US Ambassador to China, Clark T. Randt, to urge the Chinese government to adopt rabies prevention as a rule. More about this petition »
Help all racing greyhounds and sign the petition today!
The RSPCA is calling for a better life for all racing greyhounds. Each year at least 10,000 greyhounds are retired from racing. The fate of many greyhounds is unknown and huge numbers ‘disappear’. The greyhound racing industry must reveal the true extent of the problem.
Racing greyhounds may face a number of welfare problems during their lives including:
Over breeding of greyhounds leading to thousands of unwanted dogs Injury caused by inappropriate track surfaces and design Being abandoned and killed when they don’t make the grade because they are unsuitable for racing
Sign the petition now! Ask the Government to introduce regulation to protect the welfare of all racing greyhounds throughout their lives.
The government is facing calls for an inquiry into the greyhound racing industry after reports that a builder's merchant killed and buried at least 10,000 of the dogs at his home in County Durham once they were past their racing prime.
A Sunday newspaper claimed David Smith had spent the past 15 years filling land at his home in the village of Seaham with dogs' carcasses. He is reported to have charged £10 a time to kill the dogs with a bolt gun and then buried them on a plot at the back of his home.
The chairman of a cross-party animal welfare group yesterday said the greyhound industry was in denial about the fate of thousand of dogs which were slaughtered in "canine killing fields". Eric Martlew MP said he would urge his colleagues to press for an urgent inquiry.
"This is absolutely appalling," he said. "It's time the industry cleaned up its act. For a long time now people have thought this kind of thing has been going on but without any evidence. I think the industry is in denial about it. There must be hundreds, if not thousands of people in the industry who knew what this man was doing."
The Carlisle MP went on to say he suspected there were probably other people around the country doing the same thing.
Greyhounds race until they are three to five years old. After this, some are found homes, where they can live to the age of 14, but some vanish.
The associate parliamentary group for animal welfare is to hold a meeting on the issue this morning.
The government has also said it will look at the allegations which emerged after the Sunday Times said it had covertly filmed Mr Smith receiving the greyhounds and putting them down. Under current law no licence is needed to put down animals with a bolt gun.
Mr Smith told the Daily Mirror that he was no longer involved in the practice and that he had given what money he had made to charity.
The minister for animal welfare, Ben Bradshaw, said he was shocked by the claims. "It sounds horrendous and we would be interested in seeing the evidence that's been gathered in this case."
