It seems almost impossible to believe.

Imagine your dog being pulled from your home by local police and then beaten to death in front of you. There’s only one way to spare your beloved pet: kill your dog yourself (and receive 63 cents from the government!). A horrific choice.

Yet thousands of dog owners in China recently faced such a decision when a county in southwestern China killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered campaign to stop the outbreak of rabies. And now it is about to happen again in the eastern city of Jining, the southern city of Futian and many more cities across China; putting hundreds of thousands of dogs at possible risk.

Please take action now to stop the next mass dog slaughter in China.

Sadly, this is not a unique event in a country without animal welfare laws. These types of dog killing campaigns spring up in China frequently, often in reaction to rabies control failures by local governments.

The cold-blooded massacre could have been avoided if the government focused on preventing the disease through vaccination and education. But dog population control in China rests with municipal governments, most of which have no management system to regulate dog ownership and disease prevention.

Many of these dogs died slow, agonizing deaths before the eyes of their owners who are helpless to protect them. Killing dogs that have rightful owners is also a violation of the basic rights of a citizen in China, whose Constitution calls for the protection of personal property, including companion animals.

Help IFAW prevent another dog tragedy before it’s too late

IFAW has successfully convinced some municipalities in China not to carry out mass dog killing campaigns in the past. China is very sensitive to international pressure on this issue. Please send a letter today to the Chinese Ambassador in your country urging China to immediately stop the inhumane dog culls.

Please also make a contribution to IFAW so that we may continue to push for animal welfare legislation to prevent the cruel treatment of animals in China and around the world. Only animal welfare legislation at the central government level can stop such a cruel event from taking place in China again. Let’s make it happen.

YUNNAN DOG MASSACRE

As you may have read from international news reports, government authorities in Chuxiong in Yunnan province, embarked on a 5-day dog killing campaign between July 25th and July 30th following the deaths of 3 local people from rabies.

Over 50,000 dogs, including pet dogs, were brutally beaten to death, hung or electrocuted.
 
Initially the government offered dog owners 5rmb (62 US cents) to kill their own dogs, but when this measure failed a special task force was set up to raid suspected homes and kill all dogs found.
Only military and police dogs were spared by the slaughter squads.

A second Chinese city planned a mass dog slaughter to contain a rabies outbreak.


Please, send e-mails to the Chinese authorities expressing your outrage at their brutal dog eradication campaign.

The Egyptian veterinary authorities in Giza announced today in AL AKHBAR the nation wide newspaper that it is starting its campaign to poison cats and dogs, despite the fact that the Giza area had spaying/neutering  project done  through vier pfoten organization from Austria  in cooperation with the society for protection of animal rights in Egypt (SPARE & the Egyptian society for Animal friends ( ESAF), A 5 year  neutering project with WSPA to neuter animals in this governorate was discussed and agreed with the head of the veterinary department in Egypt, the project is due to start in few weeks.They are using strychnine that is prohibited world wide ( harmful for people & environment) and claim that the animal die in 5 minutes which is not true as the animal sometimes suffer for hours or days before it dies or otherwise we would not have received all these numbers of poisoned cats and dogs at our shelters and saved them.Following is the translation of the article and the Arabic article itself, please cross post  and write to international organizations worldwide to help the animal groups in Egypt fighting this battle alone .Please help us and do not ignore anything you can do to help those animals.

The veterinary authority of Giza governorate under the Chairman of Dr. Abdullah Badr established a committee to eliminate stray dogs and cats in Giza governorate due to complains from some governmental and private entities . the committee is carrying 10 campaigns daily with thin the framework of a plan to cover the whole governorate, they are using 10 kg. daily of Strychnine for dogs and Temec for cats, they put half a gram of the poison on  a piece of raw meat or fish weighing 70 grams. and distributed in areas where the cats and dogs gather. the meat and fish for dogs inside private areas are provided by the owners of these areas and the dogs and cats in the street get the meat from the leftovers of the slaughter houses.. The members of the campaigns were masks and each animal is surrounded by 4 persons as the poisoned animal suffer after eating from severe stomachache-ache and dies in 5 minutes, after wards police cars Carry the dead animal to the burning house of the faculty of veterinary medicine of Cairo university to be  burnt and later buried in the desert.


We are desperate for your help, animal organizations in Egypt are taking it upon themselves alone to carry on neuter programs and vaccinating strays to avoid this destiny for them, but it seems that all our efforts are not appreciated by the government or the vet authorities that are not carrying their main job of helping and treating animals instead of poisoning them.We are also calling upon Vier pfoten to protest to this action as many of the animals they worked on in May and June of 2005 will be the victims, not to mention that other areas as hurghada and sharm sheikh and dahab already had the same action carried on dogs that were already neutered and vaccinated.

Dear Sirs,

The matter of which I write is the latest poisoning campaign of street cats and dogs in the Giza vicinity,  Egypt.  The Egyptian veterinary authorities recently announced in the national newspaper AL AKHBAR  that it is starting a campaign to poison cats and dogs, despite the fact that a spaying/neutering  project had been implemented by the Austrian organisation Vier Pfoten in conjunction with SPARE (Society for Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt) & ESAF (Egyptian society for Animal friends)
I am aware that the overpopulation of street animals is a commonly perceived  problem in many countries, however, I am sure you will agree, to conduct a 'blanket' poisoning campaign is not only a blatant act of disrespect for animal welfare, but to use Strychinine to poison animals is illegal.
  
I respectfully urge you to do all that you can in your official capacity to investigate this matter and ensure those responsible are persuaded to uphold humane treatment of Giza's animal population.
