LET FREEDOM RING, a Care2 human/civil rights group, is now open for membership.  Visit at http://www.Care2.com/c2c/group/LetFreedomRing

THE FIRST AMENDMENT to the Constitution of the USA grants freedom of religion, press, speech, and freedom of assembly rights.  Without those, democracy fails.  Challenges to and protection of these rights will be discussed by group members.

Free press
is a necessary right and considered the backbone of democracy.  Incomplete and biased news coverage has been sited as a main reason for the success of citizens journalism.  Blogging has become a hobby for many thousands of persons.  I experience a good deal of interference in electronic communication and was informed by other people that they experience similar problems.  The cause is technical glitches sometimes, but not always.  Cybersecurity is such an important issue that President Obama recently announced that he will appoint a national cybersecurity coordinator. There is a proposal being considered to reinstate the equal time law to require equal access for opposing views in media.  These and other free press issues will be discussed here.

Last summer, scores of people felt their freedom of assembly rights were challenged when they were arrested and some were tasered as they gathered to protest at the democratic and republican conventions.  I saw a video recently of college students being arrested for gathering around the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate Lincoln's birthday.

Freedom of speech is an important right.  But where does it begin and end?  A Canadian minister was arrested because he gave a sermon condemning certain behavior on a religious basis, and one of his members went out and hurt someone.  Should the minister have been held accountable?  Some broadcasters are being accused of using their public forums to spread racist ideas.  A court placed a gag order against Troy Davis, a condemned Georgia man, preventing him from speaking to the press about his case, and there is a petition asking that the gag order be removed.  These and other free speech issues are some that may be discussed by group members as we have a little fun in lively debate and comradeship.
