Alberto Gonzales was Attorney General when my mentally ill brother, Larry Neal, was secretly arrested and died in Memphis/Shelby County Jail in August of 2003.  Gonzales was still in that position in 2005 when my family requested the USDOJ to please do its job of protecting institutionalized persons and investigate Larry's death and the likelihood of a conspiracy between Shelby County Jail and The Cochran Firm, the law firm that pretended under contract to be our wrongful death attorneys.  Five years after Larry's death and even with the change of leadership in the Attorney General's office, justice for Larry is still denied.  See http://wrongfuldeathoflarryneal.com.


There has been no “deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients.”  Mental patients who would have been in hospitals about 20 years ago are presently relegated to prisons, because the nation has criminalized mental illness.  The tremendous growth in prisons benefits Private Prison Profiteers, and half of those incarcerated are mental patients who should be in mental hospitals or in community care programs under mandatory treatment provisions.

PLEASE DON'T ROUND UP THE HOMELESS PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS AND IMPRISON THEM TO SAVE THEM FROM THE HATE CRIMES, GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER!  HOMELESSNESS, PRISON AND DEATH MUST CEASE TO BE AMERICA'S ANSWERS TO MENTAL ILLNESS.  MENTAL ILLNESS IS TREATABLE!

WHY MUST WE WAIT UNTIL THERE ARE DRIPPING KNIVES OR SMOKING GUNS TO HELP MENTAL PATIENTS IN CRISIS?  


WHY ISN'T TREATMENT AVAILABLE ALL OVER AMERICA FOR MENTAL ILLNESS, WHEN ONE IN FIVE AMERICANS SUFFERS FROM SOME TYPE OF MENTAL ILLNESS?  


WHY ARE 1.25 MILLION MENTAL PATIENTS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PRISONS INSTEAD OF HOSPITALS OR COMMUNITY CARE?


WHEN DID MENTAL PATIENTS LOSE THEIR CIVIL RIGHTS?


HOW MANY PRISONERS UNDERSTOOD THEIR MIRANDA RIGHTS OR WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR OWN DEFENSE AGAINST CRIMINAL CHARGES?


WHY ARE WE TASERING MENTAL PATIENTS, KILLING THEM IN RESTRAINT CHAIRS, CONDEMNING THEM TO LIVE FOR UP TO NINE MONTHS NAKED IN FILTH IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, KILLING THEM ON RESTRAINT TABLES, GASSING THEM, SHOOTING THEM LIKE RABID DOGS IN THE STREET?


WHEN DID AMERICA GET SO MEAN?
