California inmate, Jeremy Smith, has been schizophrenic since childhood.  He was arrested for hitting another mental patient in a mental health facility.  He caused no lasting damage.  That act of aggression from Jeremy, a sick young man, has already costed California taxpayers over $70,000 per year, because Jeremy is isolated in the "hole," which is solitary confinement.  His mom reports that Jeremy was sentenced for EIGHT YEARS.

Allegedly, Jeremy said some things to a prison guard that were not nice.  Now he faces additional sentencing for making "terrorist threats."  This is how a simple battery on the part of a mentally ill person can easily turn into life in prison - SOMETHING YOU, THE TAXPAYERS, FINANCE - the criminalization of mental illness.  Please pray for Jeremy and his mom, Care2 member, Gina.  Pray for all mentally ill people in dark, 9' 6' cells today, where they are usually naked and always alone.  Pray for our officials who allow this to continue.

Please sign Jeremy's petition for justice at this link - treatment, not punishment for mental illness.  http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/JusticeForJeremy

Below is a copy of his current pending charges.

One might ask who is brain damaged in the video. Is it the student, who was quietly walking down the school corridor at class change, or is it the enraged officer who deemed the child's shirt tail being out so offensive that the student deserved to possiby die in the choakhold the officer used on the child?

Bridge the gap to wholesome living.
Decriminalize mental illness!

October 10th is observed as World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme, "Mental Health in Primary Care: Enhancing Treatment and Promoting Mental Health," The World Mental Health Day 2009 campaign intends to draw worldwide attention to the growing body of knowledge on integrating mental health services into primary care and will stress the all too-often neglected fact that mental health is an integral element of every individual’s overall health and well-being.

How are you celebrating World Mental Health Day in your organization?

Here is an idea!  Send two emails - one to Congress and one to your local government - to support H.R. 619.  Restore Medicaid insurance to enable inpatient mental health care for acute patients or psychiatric patients in crisis.  It was largely because of the loss of this coverage that we now have 1.25 million mentally ill people in prison, at NO savings to taxpayers.

Would you also like to see the death penalty repealed in your state and/or give inmates every opportunity to prove their innocence with post-conviction DNA testing or new trials with substantial new evidence?  Then speak right up!  Here are handy links for your convenience:

.
Your Governor:

God bless you for all you do to make the world a better place for those who usually do not vote and are essentially voiceless.

Health Care Reform IS Needed.
Treat mental illness medically,
not legally.

People have different opinions on what America needs to do about health care reform, but agree that something must be done.  No matter what your opinion is in the debate, please don't forget acute mental patients need your voice.

While rallying for health care reform in America, please demand that treatment replace prisons for mentally ill citizens.

It is shameful that 1.25 million of inmates in this country are mentally ill people who should be in hospitals or in community care.  Please support H.R.619, which would restore Medicaid payments for inpatients.  It was the loss of this provision that accounts for hospital closings in the 1960's and 70's, which resulted in homelessness and imprisonment for mentally challenged citizens.

The loss of sensible standards and adequate treatment provisions account for many tragedies that we read about, including deaths of mental patients, their family members, and neighbors at school (Cho, VA Tech) in combat zones (Sgt. Russel, Iraq) and even children (Andrea Yates, Texas).

Acute mental patients deserve our help before tragedies.  They are voiceless and usually do not vote.  It is up to us to speak for them.

Jail is not the answer to mental illness, where vulnerable citizens suffer gross abuse and deaths.  Consider Anthony Gay - repeatedly handcuffed to a bare bed frame for 32 hours, naked while lying on cold iron, and deprived of any food and water.
http://freespeakblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/prison-torture-within-usa-by-mary-neal.html

At least Gay lived.  Consider my brother Larry Neal, who died under yet undisclosed circumstances under secret arrest in Memphis Shelby County Jail in 2003http://WrongfulDeathOfLarryNeal.com

PLEASE AGREE THAT ACUTE MENTALLY ILL AMERICANS DESERVE HEALTH REFORM ALSO.

SEND AN EMAIL TO YOUR CONGRESSPERSON TO
SUPPORT H.R. 619 - SPEND TO TREAT, NOT
IMPRISON MENTAL PATIENTS: http://www.house.gov/writerep

JAIL IS THE LAST THING THAT MENTAL
PATIENTS NEED, AND TOO OFTEN, IT IS THE VERY LAST THING THEY
