Below is an invitation to participate in a justice quest for the Scott sisters - two African American women who have served over 15 years imprisonment on double life sentences in Mississippi for an $11 theft they claim not to have done. Excessive sentencing and wrongful convictions help no one but prison investors. America's economy is getting as dependent on prison profiteering as it once was on slavery. Justice will not improve until Americans demand, " EDUCATION, NOT PRISONS! HEALTH CARE, NOT PRISONS! JOBS, NOT PRISONS! MENTAL HOSPITALS, NOT PRISONS! YOUTH PROGRAMS, NOT PRISONS! "

The Scott sisters' case is highly censored.  Jamie Scott is dying in prison of kidney failure.  Because she is an inmate, she has no employee health coverage to be able to pay for a kidney transplant.  Her sister offered to donate her a kidney, but Mississippi says the operation is too expensive for a prisoner.  The contested $11 theft may soon turn into a death sentence without your intervention.  Hebrews 13:3 makes prisoner treatment your business.  I put tags to this Share twice and they disappeared when I submitted the Share.  Tags should read:  ScottSisters, MaryNeal, WrongfulConvictions, ExcessiveSentencing, PrisonInvestment, PrisonProfiteering, OvercrowdedPrisons, Racism, AfricanAmerican, Slavery, InmateHealthCare, KidneyTransplant, KidneyFailure, MississippiAttorneyGeneral, AssistanceToTheIncarceratedMentallyIll, DogJustice

Life Imprisonment for an $11 Robbery

Jackson, MS – On Christmas Eve in 1993, sisters Jamie and Gladys Scott left a mini-mart near their home in Scott County, Mississippi. Their car broke down. They hitched a ride from two young men, one of whom they knew. Later that evening the two men were robbed at gunpoint by three teenagers in another car. The robbers took an estimated $11 from the two young men. No one was hurt. Police accused the Scott sisters of setting the victims up.

Their father, James “ Hawk ” Rasco had experienced problems with law enforcement after he moved his family from Chicago back to Scott County, Miss. Rasco took over a nightclub previously owned by a nephew who had turned state’s evidence in a case against the “ High White Sheriff ” of Scott County, Glenn Warren.

In the case of the Scott Sisters, the gun allegedly used in the robbery was never located, and the “ stolen ” wallet was recovered according to an affidavit by a trustee of the jail.

Jamie Scott is currently suffering from kidney failure and is gravely ill due to the care she is receiving at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) in Pearl, Mississippi. Jamie’s condition has grown more critical prompting many groups in Mississippi to start writing letters and making phone calls to elected officials.

Civil Rights Advocate Dr. Adam Reza said “ The people of Mississippi demand an investigation into the case of the Scott Sisters, and we call on Attorney General Jim Hood to personally look in to the health of Jaime Scott. This is the United States of America and the Scott Sisters are entitled to their civil rights. We shall pursue legal action against the state of Mississippi if matters are not rectified. ”

HELP is urgently needed for Jamie Scott, a Mississippi prison inmate who is dying from inadequate health care. Her kidneys failed, and she needs to be moved to a hospital immediately. Jamie and Gladys Scott are two African American women who were condemned to life in prison over an $11 theft that they disclaim having done. The taxpayers in Mississippi are condemned right along with the Scott sisters, as they have the burden of paying for this EXCESSIVE SENTENCING that has already continued for 15 years. Please read the urgent cry for help below and give your assistance.
.
It is important and commendable to rush aid to Haiti where people are in serious peril and need immediate health care after the earthquake. It is wrong to do less for Jamie Scott, whose health care is the responsibility of the government that deprives her of the freedom to work and provide her own medical coverage because of wrongful and/or excessive prison sentencing.

1/18/10 EMERGENCY ACTION ALERT!

Mrs. Rasco just received a phone call from Gladys Scott that both of Jamie Scott's kidneys have shut down and that she has been in the prison infirmary since last Saturday hooked up to IV fluids with a heavy build-up of toxins in her body. Jamie has yet to be sent to a hospital due to "paperwork." Jamie pleaded that Gladys not contact their mother because she didn't want to burden her with any more worry on top of caring for all of the children.

Gladys has offered to donate a kidney to Jamie and was told that she cannot because she is a state prisoner and was told that it would be too expensive. The greatest heartbreak of all is that Jamie has asked to be allowed to die because she wants to come home so badly and no longer believes that it will ever happen.

JAMIE SCOTT, #19197, MUST BE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY! Her physical and mental state require the highest levels of professional care.

1/19 EMERGENCY UPDATE

Thanks to everyone who is calling and e-mailing. We are in an emergency mode for Jamie. Mrs. Rasco has still not been able to get information on Jamie at this point and is understandably beyond upset. We are going to enlarge our efforts the following ways right now: We must include the media and politicians in our calls/letters.

PLEASE INCLUDE RADIO, NEWSPAPERS, ETC. AND SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH OTHERS WHO WILL HELP. THANK YOU SO MUCH, PLEASE CONTACT AS MANY AS YOU CAN SO THAT WE CAN MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

America's attention is on health care. However, inmates across the nation are suffering and there are many preventable deaths. It was reported that seven inmates died in California in 2008 from tooth decay when infection from their rotten teeth entered their bloodstreams.
.
In addition to inmates having inadequate medical care, psychiatric care is also inadequate. Jamie's sister, Gladys, reported that Jamie is losing her will to live due to depression following 15 years of incarceration for a crime the sisters deny doing. Suicide is high among inmates, particularly those who are tortured by solitary confinement. Sixty percent of inmates in solitary are mentally ill people who should be either hospitalized or released from prison to be treated under an outpatient commitment program in their communities, depending on their offenses and their ability to survive outside of a controlled environment. Unfortunately, some mentally ill Americans are imprisoned without being charged for any crime whatsoever. This started long BEFORE the Patriot Act: www.jstor.org/pss/795072

Please see the index on the left margin of my blog at http://freespeakblog.blogspot.com/ for more articles regarding human rights for prisoners and other issues with significant impact on life in America.

Excessive sentencing and wrongful convictions should not continue to claim lives of U.S. citizens. See more about the Jamie and Gladys Scott case at these sites:
