Focus: Children
Action Request: Petition
Location: United States

This worldwide petition is for baby Brianna Lopez, who knew nothing but agony in her 5 short MONTHS of life. She was murdered 9 years ago this month. Little Brianna was bitten (leaving purple toothmarked scars all over her body), swung by her legs, and thrown across the room by her mother, bitten, raped repeatedly and manually penetrated by both her father and uncle, slammed against the ceiling and let fall to the floor repeatedly, and left on the floor to suffer. Her ribs had been broken for weeks previous to her death and she had blood on her brain for weeks. Another uncle and her grandmother were fully aware of her abuse and did NOTHING to stop this (and they served less than two months in jail for this). Neither of her murderers (her father and uncle) even got life sentences.

No one in Brianna's family would even come forward to claim her little body after the autopsy, so she was buried by the community of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Further details are in the petition overview, and the more one reads about her, the more heartbreaking, and infuriating, her story is. It must be told to the world so she won't be forgotten and that justice be served.
I also want to respectfully warn you that there is a large graphic image of Brianna's abuse (showing bruising on her face and head) attached with the petition, and it is of course very shocking and upsetting, but I know it's posted there to show the world what kind of monsters Stephanie Lopez and her family are to torture and destroy this precious baby. Let's make sure she stays behind bars (though I think she --and all of them- deserve MUCH WORSE punishment than that)! Here's the link: http://www.change.org/petitions/the-new-mexico-parole-board-revoke-parole-for-stephanie-lopez-nmcd-inmate-59941

**Though the petition has a specific signature number target, I read a post from the petition writer which said it is possible to keep signing once that target is met. The target hasn't been met yet, but when it is, please do still try and sign the petition. **

Please leave a comment below to let me know you've read this and signed for Baby Brianna. Thank you. <3

Photo source-- but please take caution; there are very graphic photos of the rescue in the original message thread which I haven't posted here. Please do not visit this photo source link if would you might not be able to see photos of that nature. Thanks for your understanding!

Photos are originally from blog by eyewitness rescuer: blog.sina.com.cn/mylostbaby

(These 520 dogs were rescued by a group of volunteers who recently blocked a commercial truck on the Beijing-Harbin expressway which was transporting them to be slaughtered for food. The volunteers purchased the dogs from the truck owner and proceeded to rescue them one by one out of the truck for transport to an animal shelter in Beijing. Many have diseases and will need extensive medical care at the facility. Some are likely unlucky strays picked up off the street, while others, also stolen from the street, may have originally had owners who are looking for them).

Translation from original blog: "To love, spare no rational effort: An Angel Animal Protection volunteer's firsthand account of the first 24 hours of dog rescue on the Beijing-Harbin Expressway (Kuo County)"

Translation from original blog: "After another period of communication and coordation, at somewhere after 4 A.M, the team started out from the Kuo County entrance on the Beijing-Harbin Expressway, escorting the whole group of 520 dogs to Haidian District, Beijing, China's Small Animal Protection Association Headquarters. The team's fleet was lead by two cars belonging to Small Animal Protection Association volunteers, and nearly 80 privately-owned vehicles were behind them, transporting the dogs to the shelter headquarters. Though we had virtually no time to plan anything out, the team pulled together in a flash and had everyone in an orderly line, which stretched back for kilometers. It was a poignant and moving sight!"

Translation from blog: "Since there were so many cars and people, after all the dogs and a few volunteers went inside, we were careful to quietly stand outside so as not to cause chaos and further upset the dogs."

This post will be continued, with more pictures and a translated account of the rescue from the original blog!

My amazing mom was on the English Language Arts Textbook Committee during this controversy and supported the new textbooks which were attacked by ignorant propaganda. A few years ago, she told me a little about this and about some of the insanity that ensued, and it was an appalling/fascinating story about their experiences. There was a short piece about it on American National Public Radio a few months ago.

Kanawha County textbook controversy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kanawha County textbook controversy was a violent school control struggle in the 20th century United States. It led to the largest protests ever in the history of the county, the shooting of one bystander, and extended school closings.

School Board Ruling

On 12 March 1974, the English Language Arts Textbook Committee of Kanawha County, West Virginia recommended 325 books and textbooks to the school board for use in Kanawha elementary schools. Among these were titles such as America Reads and Language of Man.

School board member Alice Moore telephoned Mel Gabler, a textbook evaluator who ran Educational Research Analysts, a non-profit organization in Texas. Gabler in return sent pamphlets and outlines of some of the ways in which the content of the books allegedly conflicted with Christian values, moral uprightness, and patriotism. Moore, the wife of a fundamentalist minister, reported her concerns to the board and local newspapers. On 23 May, Moore came to the school board meeting and charged that the textbooks were "filthy, disgusting trash, unpatriotic and unduly favoring blacks".[1] She generated much publicity for her cause and won the support of the local Parent-Teacher Association and the Magic Valley Mother's Club. However, the West Virginia Council of Churches supported the books.

On 27 June the school board met again, with over 1,000 local residents observing, and voted to approve the books. This was met with much consternation from conservative groups. Reverend Marvin Horan called for a boycott of all public schools. Fliers were distributed around the county which purported to demonstrate the lewdness of the books, but were actually quotations from completely different books like Sexual Politics that were not part of the curriculum. When parents could not find these passages in their children's own textbooks, they accused the teachers of hiding the real books from them.[2]

Boycott and Violence

The boycott escalated quickly. Nine thousand out of 45,000 elementary school students in the county were kept home from school. Thousands of miners, bus drivers, and trucking workers joined in the boycott. The Department of Education called for a compromise, but Reverend Horan denounced them, demanding that the boycott continue until the books were permanently removed and the supporting members of the school board fired. Bombs were planted at an elementary school and a school board building; another elementary school was dynamited, school buses were attacked with shotguns, and the homes of children who continued to attend school during the boycott were stoned. Alice Moore herself fled town during this point.[3]

Reverend Charles Qugiley asked Christians to pray that God would kill the three board members who voted to keep the books, leading one student to point out, "They're shooting people because they don't want to see violence in books."[4] Kanawha's sheriff asked for state troopers to be sent in, but West Virginia Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr. denied the request. Schools were closed several times to avoid further violence.

In April 1975 Marvin Horan was sentenced to three years in prison on charges related to the bombings, effectively ending the demonstration. In Fall 1975 the school board restored the full line of books that they had approved before to all county schools.

Analysis

Joe L. Kincheloe in "Understanding the New Right and its Impact on Education" (1983) made the argument that the actions of Kanawha County School Board Member Alice Moore and her fundamentalist Christian allies in the 1974 controversy represented a defining moment in not only educational politics but American political history as well. Arguing that the Kanawha County textbook controversy was the first major victory for conservative evangelical Christians in the politically polarizing cultural debates that emerged out of the 1960s social unrest, Kincheloe wrote in the early 1980s and in subsequent work that the victory was a key moment in what he and Aaron Gresson (2004) have labeled the right-wing recovery movement. This movement has profoundly shaped subsequent American education and electoral politics, as proponents have attempted to regain the power they perceived themselves to have lost in the 1960s cultural movements. In the case of the Kanawha County controversy, Moore and her supporters perceived that progressive secularists were undermining Christian values in their embrace of moral relativism, atheism and sexual experimentation (amongst other things) in educational textbooks a la 60s liberationism. Thus, Kincheloe's interpretation of the West Virginia controversy assumes a historical significance lost on many of those who have written about it over the last three and one half decades (Kincheloe, 2001).

Hi Care2 Friends,

Thought I'd share a few click-to-donate sites which were new to me, and might be new to you, too!    I was on www.ecotonoha.com and saw that some awesome people had left links on the leaves of the virtual "tree."

One is for www.1click-animals.net, which is a Japanese site that has a click to donate button, which is shown above! Currently, it's located on the right side about half way down.

Second link is: http://www.freewebs.com/clickforcharity/. There were several click-to-donates I'd seen before, and many I hadn't!

Hope others can find something new here, too. Thank you and happy clicking!
