Today, I was reading the newspaper on-line for information about the case against my ex-husband. It occurred to me that I shouldn't just accept the bad chain of information delivered to the victim in these cases.

I'm always told to immediately register for the victims notification system, which allows a crime victim to locate the incarcerated offender. When that offender is released, an automated system calls the crime victim immediately.  I have always been called, but last call was 48 hours after the offender was released. I have an order of protection against him, and would have liked to know the day he was released.

I receive information from reliable sources, but not officially. They are sources that stop by to see me and let me know when there's something really important that I need to know.

So....why am I never notified by the courts about this case? Why do I have to call and feel like an irritation to get information that I thought I was entitled to receive? I thought crime victims were supposed to feel protected, or that there's some justice occurring. All that I see is that I'm in the dark about the court proceedings, and my ex-husband, who's a repeat offender, gets chances that he throws away for unknown reasons.

It is reassuring to see the police trying to get criminals like these off the street, but it's frustrating to watch them be released right away. Perhaps it does not matter whether a person such as myself ends up dead or not. Maybe, the possibility of a repeat, escalating, and violent criminal offender eventually killing the person he originally began attacking does not matter to the courts. Or maybe it will matter after that, because then the prosecution is easier.  Of course this is compelely absurd.  Maybe this conclusion is incorrect, but since nobody is informing me about anything, I have no reason to think otherwise.

Repeat offenders should not be given so many chances to throw away, and crime survivors should be able to live life without the feeling of being ready for a fight to defend ourselves. That sounds like a better version of crime victims rights than whatever it currently is now.

I would like to know why domestic violence can go unpunished so easily.  I would also like to know when this will change, and if it is not going to, then I need to know why.

Although I am not sure what the answer is to fix the system, I do think abusers should always be held fully accountable for their crimes. This does not happen nearly as much as it should.

Another problem is that an order of protection is really only useful after it's broken, since holding a piece of paper in front of one's face does not really help much when a person's fist is coming through it.  This really should be modified to help the person that needs to be protected.

I think the main problem is that people who abuse are given the chance to do it again.  I am not suggesting that an offender be locked up forever, but there is clearly a piece of the puzzle missing if the cycle continues over and over.  The punishments that are given by the courts are not enough to deter an offender from abusing or breaking the law again.

How is this fair, just, or helpful to anyone?
