Throughout the year many of us are approached by health charities
asking us to make a donation - to help save the lives of terminally-
ill children or people born with genetic disorders. What is often
not made apparent however, is that your donations may be funding
animal experiments.

The Leukaemia Foundation is currently conducting their door knock
appeal, and this friday (3rd August) is "Genes 4 Jeans Day" - the
major fundraiser for the Children's Medical Research Institute.
Please be aware that both these organisations fund animal
experiments.

The Leukaemia Foundation has a policy statement on their website
which confirms that some of their research involves animals, but
that they adhere to strict guidelines and have ethics committee
approval. Please visit our website
(http://www.aahr.org.au/fact_sheets/legislation.html) to see how
these guidelines are insufficient. Further information is also
available in our paper titled "The problems with ethics committees."

A booklet on the Genes 4 Genes websites confirms that they have
created a mouse model carrying a gene mutation that causes muscle
disease and that they use mice and chicks as models for human brain
development.

The Australian Association for Humane Research is NOT opposed to
medical research. We are only opposed to the use of animals in
research because it is not an ethical nor scientifically-
valid
method to achieve real medical progress. If you do not support the
use of animals in research we urge you to donate only to those
health charities that are listed on the humane charities list:

Please contact AAHR if you would like a Humane Charities car sticker
to help raise awareness.

Emma Burgess
Humane Charities Coordinator

ABOUT THE BOREAL FOREST:

An area the size of Manhattan is destroyed every five days as a result of logging for products like lumber, toilet paperand J. Crew catalogs.  If you care about clean air and water, you care about the Boreal Forest. Stretching from Alaska clear across Canada to the Atlantic Ocean, the Boreal is an astonishing wilderness, one of the largest intact ecosystems in the world. It holds more freshwater than anywhere else on the planet, and plays an essential role in cleaning the air that we breathe and in fighting climate change. It is also habitat to rare species of wolves, bears, and woodland caribou, as well as half of North America's songbirds.  Currently, less than 8% of the Boreal is protected. It is being logged at a rate of two acres a minute, 24 hours a day, much of it to make things like catalogs, junk mail, magazines, newspapers and toilet paper.
