Where: Earthmatters, 177 Ludlow St. (just north of Houston on the west side of the street)
When: Wednesday, April 4th, 7 pm
What: Stopping the sales of rainforest-destructive garden furniture by a slew of bad boys, including Smith & Hawken, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Target, Wal-mart, Sears and K-mart.
Join Rainforest Relief Wednesday night to discuss options, directions, updates and plans for our Outdoor Furniture Day of Action, scheduled for mid-April. Stores are bringing in their spring lines right now! Restoration Hardware already has their teak furniture in the store and Pottery Barn has their outdoor furniture preview up on the website. Of course, many companies sell this stuff via the web all year long but now's the time to demonstrate in the stores. We need to really hit the stores big this year. We've made some headway with some companies and we really have a chance to push them all the way.
With your help, here's what we've done so far:
* Crate & Barrel announced an end to the sales of nyatoh and established a working relationship with Tropical Forest Trust to help them find environmentally sound alternatives;
* Kmart's Martha Stewart announced an end to the sales of nyatoh, but we see that they continue to sell it on the web. We'll be keeping a close watch on what's in the stores this spring/summer, and continuing to pressure Sears/Kmart (both now part of Sears Holdings);
* Improvements has phased out of all outdoor furniture from endangered forests, phasing in plantation eucalyptus and certified mora;
* Alsto's, also part of Home Shopping Network has now done the same;
* Gardener's Supply has ended the sales of nyatoh and other outdoor furniture from endangered forests and is now selling "eco-teak" - teak from plantations in Costa Rica, as well as some recycled plastic;
* Target has phased in FSC-certified plantation eucalyptus in stores but continues to sell numerous lines of really bad outdoor furniture from endangered forests on the web;
* Wal-mart has done the same;
* Lowe's is selling only FSC-certified plantation eucalyptus for wood outdoor furniture;
* Smith & Hawken is working with Rainforest Alliance to once again source certified wood - we don't yet know exactly what that means;
* We now hear that Williams-Sonoma, owners of Pottery Barn and West, are working on a comprehensive wood procurement policy and we will be working with ForestEthics on this.
We've got a number of companies poised on the edge and a few who have dug in their heels and even gotten worse (Restoration Hardware, for instance). We really need a big push this spring and summer and I believe we can get this thing rolling to isolate the bad players and stop the sales of nyatoh, balau, kapur, garapera, jatoba and old growth teak in the US for garden furniture, once and for all.
See you all there! Or, if you're not in NYC, please reply and let's plan an action in your area together.
