> Cancer is not a Disease -
> It's a Survival Mechanism
> (Book Excerpt)
> NaturalNews
> Friday, February 01, 2008
> by: Andreas Moritz
> What you are about to read may rock or even dismantle the very
> foundation of your beliefs about your body, health and healing. The
> title, 'Cancer Is Not a Disease' may be unsettling for many,
> provocative to some, but encouraging for all. This book will serve as
> a revelation for those who are sufficiently open-minded to consider
> the possibility that cancer and other debilitating illnesses are not
> actual diseases, but desperate and final attempts by the body to stay
> alive for as long as circumstances permit.
> It will perhaps astound you to learn that a person who is afflicted
> with the main causes of cancer (which constitute the real illness)
> would most likely die quickly unless he actually grew cancer cells. In
> this work, I provide evidence to this effect.
> I further claim that cancer will only occur after all other defense or
> healing mechanisms in the body have failed. In extreme circumstances,
> exposure to large amounts of cancer-producing agents (carcinogens) can
> bring about a collapse of the body's defenses within several weeks or
> months and allow for rapid and aggressive growth of a cancerous tumor.
> Usually, though, it takes many years, or even decades, for these
> so-called 'malignant' tumors to form.
> Unfortunately, basic misconceptions or complete lack of knowledge
> about the reasons behind tumor growth have turned 'malignant' tumors
> into vicious monsters that have no other purpose but to kill us in
> retaliation for our sins or abusing the body. However, as you are
> about to find out, cancer is on our side, not against us. Unless we
> change our perception of what cancer really is, it will continue to
> resist treatment, particularly the most 'advanced' methods. If you
> have cancer, and cancer is indeed part of the body's complex survival
> responses and not a disease, as I suggest it is, you must find answers
> to the following pressing questions:
> * What reasons coerce your body into developing cancer cells?
> * Once you have identified these reasons, will you be able to change
> them? What determines the type and severity of cancer with which you
> are afflicted?
> * If cancer is a survival mechanism, what needs to be done to prevent
> the body from taking recourse to such drastic defense measures?
> * Since the body's original genetic design always favors the
> preservation of life and protection against adversities of any kind,
> why would the body permit self-destruction?
> * Why do almost all cancers disappear by themselves, without medical
> intervention?
> * Do radiation, chemotherapy and surgery actually cure cancer, or do
> cancer survivors heal due to other reasons, despite these radical,
> side-effect-loaded treatments?
> * What roles do fear, frustration, low self-worth and repressed anger
> play in the origination and outcome of cancer?
> * What is the spiritual growth lesson behind cancer?
> To deal with the root causes of cancer, you must find satisfying and
> practical answers to the above questions. If you feel the inner urge
> to make sense of this life-changing event, (cancer that is), you most
> likely will recover from it. Cancer can be your greatest opportunity
> to help restore balance to all aspects of your life, but it can also
> be the harbinger of severe trauma and suffering. Either way you are
> always in control of your body.
> To live in a human body, you must have access to a certain amount of
> life-sustaining energy. You may either use this inherent energy in a
> nourishing and self-sustaining or in a destructive and debilitating
> way. In case you consciously or unconsciously choose negligence or
> self-abuse over loving attention and self-respect, your body will
> likely end up having to fight for its life.
> Cancer is but one of the many ways the body tries to change the way
> you see and treat yourself, including your body. This inevitably
> brings up the subject of spiritual health, which plays at least as
> important a role in cancer as physical and emotional reasons do.
> Cancer appears to be a highly confusing and unpredictable disorder. It
> seems to strike the very happy and the very sad, the rich and the
> poor, the smokers and the non-smokers, the very healthy and the not so
> healthy. People from all backgrounds and occupations can have cancer.
> However, if you dare look behind the mask of its physical symptoms,
> such as the type, appearance and behavior of cancer cells, you will
> find that cancer is not as coincidental or unpredictable as it seems
> to be.
> What makes 50% of the American population so prone to developing
> cancer, when the other half has no risk at all? Blaming the genes for
> that is but an excuse to cover up ignorance of the real causes.
> Besides, any good genetic researcher would tell you that such a belief
> is void of any logic and outright unscientific (as explained in the
> book).
> Cancer has always been an extremely rare illness, except in
> industrialized nations during the past 40-50 years. Human genes have
> not significantly changed for thousands of years. Why would they
> change so drastically now, and suddenly decide to kill scores of
> people? The answer to this question is amazingly simple: Damaged or
> faulty genes do not kill anyone. Cancer does not kill a person
> afflicted with it! What kills a cancer patient is not the tumor, but
> the numerous reasons behind cell mutation and tumor growth. These root
> causes should be the focus of every cancer treatment, yet most
> oncologists typically ignore them. Constant conflicts, guilt and
> shame, for example, can easily paralyze the body's most basic
> functions, and lead to the growth of a cancerous tumor.
> After having seen thousands of cancer patients over a period of three
> decades, I began to recognize a certain pattern of thinking, believing
> and feeling that was common to most of them. To be more specific, I
> have yet to meet a cancer patient who does not feel burdened by some
> poor self-image, unresolved conflict and worries, or past emotional
> trauma that still lingers in his/her subconscious. Cancer, the
> physical disease, cannot occur unless there is a strong undercurrent
> of emotional uneasiness and deep-seated frustration.
> Cancer patients typically suffer from lack of self-respect or
> worthiness, and often have what I call an 'unfinished business' in
> their life. Cancer can actually be a way of revealing the source of
> such inner conflict. Furthermore, cancer can help them come to terms
> with such a conflict, and even heal it altogether. The way to take out
> weeds is to pull them out along with their roots. This is how we must
> treat cancer; otherwise, it may recur eventually.
> The following statement is very important in the consideration of
> cancer: 'Cancer does not cause a person to be sick; it is the sickness
> of the person that causes the cancer.' To treat cancer successfully
> requires the patient to become whole again on all levels of his body,
> mind and spirit. Once the cancer causes have been properly identified,
> it will become apparent what needs to be done to achieve complete
> recovery.
> It is a medical fact that every person has cancer cells in the body
> all the time. These cancer cells remain undetectable through standard
> tests until they have multiplied to several billion. When doctors
> announce to their cancer patients that the treatments they prescribed
> had successfully eliminated all cancer cells, they merely refer to
> tests that are able to identify the detectable number of cancerous
> cells. Standard cancer treatments may lower the number of cancer cells
> to an undetectable level, but this certainly cannot eradicate all
> cancer cells. As long as the causes of tumor growth remain intact,
> cancer may redevelop at any time and at any rate.
> Curing cancer has little to do with getting rid of a group of
> detectable cancer cells. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation
> are certainly capable of poisoning or burning many cancer cells, but
> they also destroy healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal
> tract, liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, etc., which often leads to
> permanent irreparable damage of entire organs and systems in the body.
> A real cure of cancer does not occur at the expense of destroying
> other vital parts of the body.
> Each year, hundreds of thousands of people who were once
> 'successfully' treated for cancer die from infections, heart attacks,
> liver failure, kidney failure and other illnesses because the cancer
> treatments generate a massive amount of inflammation and destruction
> in the organs and systems of the body. Of course, these causes of
> death are not being attributed to cancer. This statistical omission
> makes it appear we are making progress in the war against cancer.
> However, many more people are dying from the treatment of cancer than
> from cancer. A real cure or cancer is achievable only when the causes
> of excessive growth of cancer cells have been removed or stopped.
> Power in the Word
> Cancer is the second leading 'cause' of death for Americans. According
> to the American Cancer Society, about 1.2 million cases will be
> diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. in 2008. More than 552,000 Americans
> will die of it. Among men, the top three cancer diagnoses are expected
> to be prostate cancer (180,400 cases), lung cancer (89,500 cases), and
> colorectal cancer (63,600). The leading types of cancer among women
> are breast cancer (182,800 cases), lung cancer (74,600), and
> colorectal cancer (66,600 cases).
> Cancer is not just a word, but also a statement that refers to
> abnormal or unusual behavior of cells in the body. However, in quite a
> different context, cancer is referred to as a star sign. When someone
> tells you that you are a 'cancer', are you going to tremble with fear
> of dying? It is unlikely, because your interpretation of being of the
> cancer sign does not imply that you have cancer, the illness. But if
> your doctor called you into his office and told you that you had
> cancer, you would most likely feel paralyzed, numb, terrified,
> hopeless, or all of the above.
> The word 'cancer' has the potential to play a very disturbing and
> precarious role, one that is capable of delivering a death sentence.
> Being a cancer patient seems to start with the diagnosis of cancer,
> although its causes may have been there for many years prior to
> feeling ill. Within a brief moment, the word 'cancer' can turn
> someone's entire world upside down.
> Who or what in this world has bestowed this simple word or statement
> with such great power that it can preside over life and death? Or does
> it really? Could it actually be that our collective, social belief
> that cancer is a killer disease, in addition to the aggressive
> treatments that follow diagnosis, are largely responsible for the
> current dramatic escalation of cancer in the Western hemisphere? Too
> far fetched, you might say! In this book, however, I will make the
> point that cancer can have no power or control over us, unless we
> unconsciously allow it to grow in response to the beliefs,
> perceptions, attitudes, thoughts, feelings we have, and the life
> choices we make.
> Would we be just as afraid of cancer if we knew what caused it or at
> least understood what its underlying purpose is? Unlikely so! If truth
> were told, we would most probably do everything to remove the causes
> and, thereby, set the preconditions for the body to heal itself.
> A little knowledge (which is what we call ignorance) is, in fact, a
> dangerous thing. Almost everyone, at least in the industrialized
> world, knows that drinking water from a filthy pond or polluted lake
> can cause life-threatening diarrhea, but still only few realize that
> holding on to resentment, anger and fear, or eating fast foods,
> chemical additives, and artificial sweeteners, is no less dangerous
> than drinking polluted water; it may just take a little longer to kill
> a person than tiny amoeba can.
> Mistaken Judgment
> We all know that if the foundation of a house is strong, the house can
> easily withstand external challenges, such as a violent storm. As we
> will see, cancer is merely an indication that there is something
> missing in our body and in life as a whole. Cancer shows that life as
> a whole (physical, mental and spiritual) stands on shaky grounds and
> is quite fragile, to say the least. It would be foolish for a gardener
> to water the withering leaves of a tree when he knows so well that the
> real problem is not where it appears to be, namely, on the symptomatic
> level (of withered leaves). By watering the roots of the plant, he
> naturally attends to the causative level, and consequently, the plant
> regenerates itself swiftly and automatically.
> To the trained eye of a gardener, the symptom of withering leaves is
> not a dreadful disease. He recognizes that the dehydrated state of
> these leaves is but a direct consequence of withdrawn nourishment that
> they need in order to sustain themselves and the rest of the plant.
> Although this example from nature may appear to be a simplistic
> analogy, it offers a profound understanding of very complex disease
> processes in the human body. It accurately describes one of the most
> powerful and fundamental principles controlling all life forms on the
> planet. However skilled we may have become in manipulating the
> functions of our body through the tools of allopathic medicine, this
> basic, highly evolved principle of evolution cannot be suppressed or
> violated without paying the hefty price of side-effect-riddled
> suffering and pain - physically, emotionally and spiritually.
> I fervently challenge the statement that cancer is a killer disease.
> Furthermore, I will demonstrate that cancer is not a disease at all.
> Many people who received a 'terminal' cancer sentence actually defied
> the prognosis and experienced total remission.
> The Need for Answers
> There is no cancer that has not been survived by someone, regardless
> how far advanced it was. If even one person has succeeded in healing
> his cancer, there must be a mechanism for it, just as there is a
> mechanism for creating cancer. Every person on the planet has the
> capacity for both. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may not
> be able to change the diagnosis, but it is certainly in your power to
> alter the destructive consequences that it (the diagnosis) may have on
> you. The way you see the cancer and the steps you take following the
> diagnosis are some of the most powerful determinants of your future
> wellness, or the lack of it.
> The indiscriminate reference to 'cancer' as being a killer disease by
> professionals and lay people alike has turned cancer into a disorder
> with tragic consequences for the majority of today's cancer patients
> and their families. Cancer has become synonymous to extraordinary
> suffering, pain and death. This is true despite the fact that 90-95
> percent of all cancers appear and disappear out of their own accord.
> There is not a day that passes without the body making millions of
> cancer cells. Some people, under severe temporary stress make more
> cancer cells than usual and form clusters of cancerous cells that
> disappear again once they feel better. Secretions of the DNA's
> anticancer drug, Interleukin II, drop under physical and mental duress
> and increase again when relaxed and joyful. Thus, most cancers vanish
> without any form of medical intervention and without causing any real
> harm.
> Right at this moment, there are millions of people walking around with
> cancers in their body without having a clue that they have them.
> Likewise, there are millions of people who heal their cancers without
> even knowing it. Overall, there are many more spontaneous remissions
> of cancer than there are diagnosed and treated cancers.
> The truth is, relatively few cancers actually become 'terminal.'
> However, once diagnosed, the vast majority of all cancers are never
> even given a chance to disappear on their own. They are promptly
> targeted with an arsenal of deadly weapons of cell destruction such as
> chemotherapy drugs, radiation and the surgical knife. The problem with
> cancer patients is that, terrified by the diagnosis, they submit their
> bodies to all these cut/burn/poison procedures that, more likely than
> not, lead them to the day of final sentencing, 'We have to tell you
> with our deepest regret there is nothing more that can be done to help
> you.'
> The most pressing question is not how advanced or dangerous a cancer
> is, but what we need to do to not end up dying from it. Why do some
> people go through cancer as if it were the flu? Are they just lucky or
> is there a mechanism at work that triggers the healing? In other
> words, what is that element that prevents the body from healing cancer
> naturally, or what is that hidden element that makes cancer so
> dangerous, if it is dangerous at all?
> The answers to all these queries lie with the response of the person
> who has the cancer, and not with the degree of 'viciousness' or
> advanced stage it appears to have progressed to. Do you believe that
> cancer is a disease? You will most likely answer with a 'yes,' given
> the 'informed' opinion that the medical industry and mass media have
> fed to the masses for many decades. Yet, the most pressing yet rarely
> asked question remains: 'Why do you think cancer is a disease?' You
> may say: 'Because I know cancer kills people every day.' I would
> question you further: 'How do you know that it is the cancer that
> kills people?' You would probably argue that most people who have
> cancer die, so obviously it must be the cancer that kills them.
> Besides, you may reason, all the expert doctors tell us so.
> Let me raise another question, a rather strange one: 'How do you know
> for sure that you are the daughter/son of your father and not of
> another man?' Is it because your mother told you so? What makes you
> think that your mother told you the truth? Probably because you
> believe her; and you have no reason not to. After all, she is your
> mother, and mothers do not lie about these things. Or do they?
> Although you will never really know that the person you believe to be
> your father is, in fact, your father, you nevertheless have turned
> what you subjectively believe into something that you just 'know,'
> into an irrefutable truth.
> Although there is no scientific proof whatsoever that cancer is a
> disease (versus a survival mechanism), most people will insist that it
> is a disease because this is what they were told to believe. Yet their
> belief is only hearsay information based on other people's opinions.
> These other people heard it from someone else. Eventually, the 'truth'
> of cancer being a disease can be traced to some doctors who expressed
> their subjective feelings or beliefs about what they observed and
> wrote about in some review articles or medical reports. Other doctors
> agreed with their opinion, and before long, it became a
> 'well-established' fact that cancer is a vicious illness that somehow
> gets hold of people in order to kill them. However, the truth of the
> matter may be quite different.
> Wisdom of Cancer Cells
> Cancer cells are not part of a malicious disease process. When cancer
> cells spread (metastasize) throughout the body, it is not their
> purpose or goal to disrupt the body's vitals functions, infect healthy
> cells and obliterate their host (the body). Self-destruction is not
> the theme of any cell unless, of course, it is old and worn-out and
> ready to be turned-over and replaced. Cancer cells, like all other
> cells, know that if the body dies, they will die as well. Just because
> some people assume that cancer cells are there to destroy the body
> does not mean cancer cells have such a purpose or ability.
> A cancerous tumor is neither the cause of progressive destruction nor
> does it actually lead to the death of the body. There is nothing in a
> cancer cell that has even remotely the ability to kill anything. What
> eventually leads to the demise of an organ or the entire body is the
> wasting away of cell tissue resulting from continued deprivation of
> nutrients and life force. The drastic reduction or shutdown of vital
> nutrient supplies to the cells of an organ is not primarily a
> consequence of a cancerous tumor, but actually its biggest cause.
> By definition, a cancer cell is a normal, healthy cell that has
> undergone genetic mutation to the point that it can live in an
> anaerobic surrounding (an environment where oxygen is not available).
> In other words, if you deprive a group of cells of vital oxygen (their
> primary source of energy), some of them will die, but others will
> manage to alter their genetic software program and mutate in a most
> ingenious way: the cells will be able to live without oxygen and
> derive some of their energy needs from such things as cellular
> metabolic waste products.
> It may be easier to understand the cancer cells phenomenon when
> comparing it with the behavior of common microorganisms. Bacteria, for
> example, are divided into two main groups, aerobic and anaerobic,
> meaning, those that need to use oxygen and those that can live without
> it. This is important to understand since we have more bacteria in our
> body than we have cells. Aerobic bacteria thrive in an oxygenated
> environment. They are responsible for helping us with the digestion of
> food and manufacturing of important nutrients, such as B-vitamins.
> Anaerobic bacteria, on the other hand, can appear and thrive in an
> environment where oxygen does not reach. They break down waste
> materials, toxic deposits and dead, worn-out cells.
> The body sees the cancer as being such an important defense mechanism
> that it even causes the growth of new blood vessels to guarantee the
> much-needed supply of glucose and, therefore, survival and spreading
> of the cancer cells. It knows that cancer cells do not cause but,
> prevent death; at least for a while, until the wasting away of an
> organ leads to the demise of the entire organism. If the trigger
> mechanisms for cancer (causal factors) are properly taken care of,
> such an outcome can be avoided.
> It is commonly believed that our immune system protects us against
> cancer. However, this is only partially true. On the one hand, the
> immune system readily destroys the millions of cancer cells that a
> healthy human body produces as part of the daily turnover of 30
> billion cells. On the other hand, the immune system takes no action to
> eradicate cancer cells that develop in response to a build up of
> toxins, congestion and emotional stress.
> Cancers and all other tissues in the body are larded with
> cancer-killing white cells, such as T-cells. In the case of kidney
> cancer and melanomas, for example, white cells make up 50 per cent of
> the mass of the cancers. Since these T-cells easily recognize foreign
> or mutated cell tissue such as cancer cells, you would expect these
> immune cells to attack cancer cells right away. However, the immune
> system allows cancer cells to recruit it to actually increase and
> spread the cancer to other parts of the body. Cancer cells produce
> specific proteins that tell the immune cells to leave them alone and
> help them to grow
> Why would the immune system want to collaborate with cancer cells to
> make more or larger tumors? Because cancer is a survival mechanism,
> not a disease. The body uses the cancer to keep deadly carcinogenic
> substances and caustic metabolic waste matter away from the lymph and
> blood and, therefore, from the heart, brain and other vital organs.
> Killing off cancer cells would in fact jeopardize its survival.
> Cleansing the body of accumulated toxins and waste products through
> the various cleansing methods advocated in my book Timeless Secrets of
> Health and Rejuvenation ( removes the need for
> cancer.
> Cancer is not a disease; it is the final and most desperate survival
> mechanism the body has at its disposal. It only takes control of the
> body when all other measures of self-preservation have failed. To
> truly heal cancer and what it represents in a person's life we must
> come to the understanding that the reason the body allows some of its
> cells to grow in abnormal ways is in its best interest and not an
> indication that it is about to destroy itself. Cancer is a healing
> attempt by the body for the body. Blocking this healing attempt can
> destroy the body. Supporting the body in its healing efforts can save
> it.

my dear friends,

i would like to ask you to have a thought for nanny who will have surgery tomorrow morning (8.30am, paris time). They will take away tumors that are cancerous.
Please think of her, & send love her way, she will need it.

i thank you for that.

Background: (go here to take action)

-In 1987, the Montreal Protocal, an international treaty to ban ozone depleting chemicals, mandated the phase out of the fumigant methyl bromide, which is used widely in the U.S. on crops like strawberries. The full phase out was to take place over the course of 18 years.

-In 2004, the Bush Administration began pushing for exemptions to the treaty to allow the U.S. to continue using chemicals like methyl bromide for economic reasons.

-In 2005, the Administration began considering converting methyl bormide use to a new chemical marketed by Arysta Life Sciences known as methyl iodide, which does not deplete the ozone layer.

-But unlike many other pesticides, methyl iodide vaporizes quickly, causing it to drift far distances. Although the state of California has categorized it as cancer causing, and the EPA admits it causes thyroid tumors, the agency has been pushing to approve the chemical since 2006.

-In a letter to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson on September 25, 2007, the nation's leading chemists asked EPA not to approve methyl iodide without further scientific review. The chemical has been used to induce cancer in laboratory experiments and causes neurological and thyroid problems, as well as miscarriages in studies with laboratory animals.

-On October 5, 2007, the EPA approved methyl iodide for widespread use in the U.S., putting farmworkers, families and rural communities at risk.

Please send a letter to the EPA requesting they heed the advice of the nation's leading chemists.

Malady - A Planetary Cancer

The crew of spacecraft Earth is in virtual mutiny to the order of the universe.

Edgar Mitchell

How does a species that has developed thinking, reason, foresight and choice come to behave in such short-sighted ways? We like to think of ourselves as the most intelligent species on this planet, but are we really that intelligent?

How intelligent is a species that can understand it is destroying the ecosystem crucial for its existence -- and then continues to destroy it? Any individual who behaved in such an irrational manner, without any care or respect for its own welfare or that of others, would be classed as insane.

Such behavior has close parallels with cancer. When cancers become malignant they can grow very fast, and with no regard for the rest of the organism. They are a part of the body, yet in many respects behave as if they were completely separate. They are also somewhat stupid; if a cancer is successful it may kill its host, and hence itself.

Similarly, the human population has been growing rapidly, and with little regard for its environment. We are part of the earth's biosphere, and totally dependent upon it, yet we behave as if we were quite separate from it. Our cities eat into the countryside, eradicating natural ecosystems, spreading deserts of sand and concrete. We allow our toxic wastes to flow into our surroundings, poisoning other species with hardly a thought. And we too are somewhat stupid; if we continue along this path we are likely to cause irreversible damage to the biosphere, and will probably destroy ourselves.

But the parallels go deeper than surface appearances and behavior. When we look at what underlies cancer and at what underlies humanity's malignant tendencies, we again find remarkably similar patterns.

In essence cancer can be thought of as a programming error. The genes in the heart of every cell are essentially a set of chemical programs that give instructions on how to construct various complex proteins which determine the cell's structure and behavior. Virtually every cell in your body contains the same set of instructions, but only those appropriate to that type of cell and its current phase of development are switched on at a given time.

Occasionally sets of instructions that should be switched off are turned on, or vice versa. This can happen for a number of reasons.

  • Radiation from space, nuclear reactors, or medical treatments may damage the control sequences -- the switches in the gene.
  • Toxic chemicals in the air, in water, or in food, may produce changes in the molecular information.
  • Or a virus may enter the cell and insert itself into a gene, disrupting its sequence of instructions.

Guided by an inappropriate set of programs, the damaged cell no longer acts in harmony with the rest of the body. It becomes what is called a "rogue" cell.

Generally the results are benign. But if instructions to grow and reproduce are turned on the rogue cells can begin multiplying without limit. This is the beginning of malignancy.

A Virus in the Mind

Humanity's malignant tendencies likewise stem from an inappropriate set of programs. However, because we have moved on from biological evolution to cultural evolution, the programs that now influence our behavior and development are to be found not in our genes but in our minds. They are our attitudes and values -- the way we see life, the way we see ourselves and what we think is important. It is these, not our genes, that determine most of our decisions and day-to-day activity.

The biologist Richard Dawkins calls these thought patterns "memes". The ideas we have about fashion, the values we hold about right and wrong, the beliefs we have about work and leisure, the value we put on money, our assumptions about the purpose of life: these are all memes. Like genes, memes reproduce as they pass from one person to another. A hundred years ago the meme of using computers to help us in our work did not exist. Today it has spread to everyone; the idea is firmly implanted within us all. Memes are the basic unit of cultural hereditary, and like the genes in a cell, bind us together into a cohesive society.

Some memes are useful. Ideas about how to raise children in a loving manner, and reduce the incidence of childhood trauma, are very valuable and can improve the long-term quality of life in a profound way. Others may be less useful. A meme that undervalues people of different cultures, races or class can spread contempt and strife through society. Such memes are like a virus, they not only spread from one person to another, they can also make society as a whole sick.

This is what lies behind the malignant aspects of modern culture. In much the same way as a virus in the cell can cause programs in the gene to be switched on or off at the wrong time resulting in cancerous cells, our minds have become infected with a belief system that has switched on memes that might have been useful at an earlier stage in our evolution, but which are totally inappropriate in the modern world. We may, for instance, take the attitude that our own benefit comes before that of others. We may value our material possessions more for the status they bring than for their utility. And we may believe that financial or political expediency is more important than our long-term welfare.

It is these outdated mental programs that lie behind much of our self-centredness, short-sighted decisions and less than intelligent behavior.

How has this happened? Where did this dysfunctional self-interested thinking come from?

Soda Ingredients Linked to Cirrhosis and Cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reported that it found a high level of cancer-causing benzene in five of the 100 soft drinks and beverages that it tested. The levels of benzene were more than the recommended 5 parts per billion limit for drinking water.

The FDA said that it had alerted the companies that make the soft drinks in which benzene was over the prescribed limit. All companies had agreed to reformulate their drinks or have already done so, the FDA revealed on Friday. It maintained that there was no cause for concern although some environmental groups have expressed dismay at these findings.

The five soft drinks/beverages, which had excess levels of benzene, were * Safeway Select Diet Orange - one lot was found to have 79.2 parts per billion of benzene * AquaCal Strawberry Flavored Water Beverage - one lot was found to have 23.4 parts per billion * Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange - one lot was found to have 87.9 parts per billion * Giant Light Cranberry Juice Cocktail - one lot was found to have 10.7 parts per billion * Crush Pineapple - one lot was found to have 9.2 parts per billion

Benzene in soft drinks has become a very sensitive matter these days. The chemical id formed as a result of a reaction between Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and either sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate, which are contained in soft drinks and beverages. However the reaction does not occur as a rule, but takes place as an exception when the conditions are ideal for the reaction to take place.

Benzene is a chemical, which is linked to cancer in humans. It is released into the air from automobile emissions, burning coal and oil. Benzene is also used extensively in industries, which produce chemicals, dyes, detergents, synthetic fibers, solvents, rubber and some plastics.

Workers in chemical industry, gas stations, gasoline distribution jobs, rubber industry, printing industry and leather industry are also at a high risk since they are chronically exposed to benzene.

As such the FDA does not have a upper limit for benzene in soft drinks. Rather it follows the five parts per billion (ppb) limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water. The FDA's website says that benzene can cause harm at "very low levels." It adds that exposure to light can trigger the formation of benzene in the soft drinks.

The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization reacted to these findings by the FDA by saying that it is time the agency recognized the problem of high levels of cancer-causing benzene in soft drinks. "FDA's test results confirm that there is a serious problem with benzene in soda and juices," said Richard Wiles, senior vice president at Environmental Working Group.

"There is no excuse for deliberately putting chemicals that form high levels of potent cancer-causing benzene in popular drinks," Wiles added. "This is a wake-up call for the beverage industry. It is time to get benzene-forming ingredients out of sodas and juices."

The issue of benzene in soft drinks came to the attention of the FDA in the 1990s. Since then the FDA conducted a food testing program called the Total Diet Study between 1995 to 2000 according to the EWG. It tested 24 samples of diet soda for benzene in the study. Around 79 percent (nineteen) of the soft drinks were found to have benzene above the permitted levels.

Earlier this year, officials in Britain pulled some soft drinks and juices that contained benzene from the shelves. Mr Wiles feels that the FDA should do the same, "FDA should do what British food safety officials did: Disclose the test results that taxpayers have paid for. Tell consumers which products contain high levels of benzene," he said. "Tell consumers the circumstances under which benzene is more likely to be formed - such as prolonged storage under warm conditions."

Mr Wiles feels that telling the public would automatically force manufacturers to reformulate the products, "Once people have this information, we are convinced that food and drink manufacturers will simply reformulate their products, as many already have done, and as FDA originally intended in 1990."

There is no dispute on the cancer-causing potential of benzene "Benzene is carcinogenic to humans and no safe level of exposure can be recommended," the World Health Organization has maintained. Benzene causes leukemia and can also cross the placenta affecting the fetus.

Study: Soft Drink Ingredient Sodium Benzoate May Lead to Cirrhosis, Parkinson's

By Griff
New findings regarding the dangers to health by soft drinks has caused fear in the UK and is sure to cause concern in other parts of the world, according to a report published in the Irish Independent.

Soda could be doing more damage than you think Credit: unknown Copyright: unknown Enlarge + According to recent research, carried out by Sheffield University in the UK, a preservative that is commonly found in soft drinks can cause essential parts of human DNA to stop working, leading to serious health problems.

The health problems most commonly thought to arise from this preservative are not what most would associated with drinking a soda or fruit juice, but more with the aging process and excessive alcohol consumption.

Many of us know today that too much soda should be avoided as it can lead to dental problems. But the new research reveals that the preservative commonly found in soft drinks can also lead to cirrhosis and Parkinson's.

The head expert that worked on the study, Peter Piper, took a close look at this common preservative, known as E211, otherwise called sodium benzoate. Piper told the Independent that "these chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it, they knock it out altogether. The mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it then the cell starts to malfunction very seriously."

Sodium benzoate or E211 has been used in soft drinks for many years. This isn't the first time this commonly used preservative has been the subject of controversy. Last year it was causing fear over its potential to cause cancer if it was combined with vitamin C. It was found that when E211 was combined with Vitamin C, a carcinogenic was created, called benzene. Last year the Food Standards Agency in the UK investigated a number of soft drinks that had this combination and found four to have unsafe levels of benzene. As a result these four drinks were taken from store shelves.

Many may be wondering what the purpose of E211 is and why it is so commonly used. The reason E211 is used is that is keeps the soft drinks fresh by not allowing mould and other harmful bacteria to grow. E211 isn't just found in soft drinks, it can be found in other food products such as salad dressing.

Both the food agencies in the US and Europe have sodium benzoate as an approved safe to use substance. However, Piper was quick to point out that the test carried out by these two food agencies were old and now inaccurate.

Piper said, "By the criteria of modern safety testing, the safety tests were inadequate. Like all things, safety testing moves forward and you can conduct a much more rigorous safety test than you could 50 years ago. We are feeding vast amounts of them to children inadvertently. Is this a completely safe process?"

Cancer can be deadly and scary, but it doesn't always lead to death and need not rob a person of his or her sexuality.

Just ask "Crazy Sexy Cancer" survivor/filmmaker Kris Carr of Bearsville, the creator and star of a documentary and soon-to-be-published self-help book of the same name. "Crazy Sexy Cancer" makes a local debut with its first regional screening June 29 as part of the pre-season Woodstock Film Festival.

"People say to me, what's so sexy about cancer? What I tell them is: 'Women who have it, we're living, vibrant, crazy, sexy, struggling, normal women."

Over the last four years, while fighting relentlessly negative diagnoses of cancer that had infiltrated her liver and lungs, Carr has given up acting to become a documentary filmmaker, fallen in love, learned how to fly via trapeze, married, moved into a new home in Woodstock and created a sort of multimedia cancer-fighting franchise.

What started as a life-saving gambit turned into joyful exploration.

"In the midst of the desperation, I was starting to have fun," Carr said in the documentary.

Interviewed in the Bearsville home she shares with husband/filmmaker Brian Fasset, Carr, who is now 35, laughed at a pop-quiz on how to spell her disease.

Fifteen letters into spelling out the sub-category of her cancer, it was helpful for her to have Fasset at her side. Caught up on whether it was epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, or epithelioid hemengioendothelioma, Fassett spoke up and said "hemAn."

A vascular cancer, the disease has infiltrated Carr's lungs and liver, creating 24 tumors. While the tumors triggered by the disease are normally slow growing, the prognosis is almost always extremely dark.

Although there are some tears (and comically foul language) the film itself is mostly upbeat and full of life-embracing moments. Carr said she gained strength and perspective from other women who fought cancer with creativity and verve by specifically seeking them out.

"I couldn't help but wonder how other cancer chicks dealt with this," she said.

Some embraced the baldness that came with their treatments, others put on wigs and hats that said "FXXX Cancer."

She had a sense of humor about many of the new age treatments that were offered to complement what her Western doctors were suggesting. Sometimes she shook her head and laughed at the crystals or resonating healing tones waved in her direction, but she tried many of the methods anyway.

At the other end of the spectrum, she wondered at a cluster of smokers hanging out at a major cancer hospital.

"Helloooooo people!" she said, knocking her knuckle on her head.

She also tried the macrobiotic kale-burdock-daikon-whole-grain-steamed-bread diet. Macrobiotic diets are supposed to benefit from ingredients that digest well together.

To a point.

At a buffet that a cluster of vegetarians was oohing over, Carr waggled her eyebrows and said: "A plateful of gas!"

In her quest for health, Carr also internalized much wheatgrass juice (and not a few wheatgrass enemas.)

She also went through a raw phase, eating only uncooked ingredients, but that got old after a point. "I don't think I can put another raw thing into my stomach," she said when wavering.

By now, she has found a happy medium between all the dietary and exercise extremes.

She is still a vegan (no dairy or meat) and has hung on to the wheatgrass juice habit, squeezing and juicing clumps of the green shoots regularly.

During the interview, Fasset said they had just completed a flat of wheatgrass, and had had a breakfast including many vegetables juiced together.

When considering the cause of her cancer, she delved into possible environmental and attitudinal sources. Her spiritual exploration considered everything from what her personal guru Bhagavan Das had to say: "Stinkin' thinking is the problem," to whether she had karmically brought on the disease through inconsiderate behavior, the consumption of alcohol or the inhalation of illicit drugs.

Carr, who was starring in Budweiser Superbowl commercials the same year she was diagnosed, lived a rollicking lifestyle before settling down. From this point forward, she sees herself as more of a filmmaker and author. She described the soon-to-be published companion book to her film, which is also named "Crazy Sexy Cancer," to be "A girlfriends' guide to cancer."

To be sure their projects do no harm, Carr and Fasset said they are conscious not to put out a prescription for how every cancer patient should deal with their disease. Each case is unique and the science is nowhere near certain on most treatments, Fasset said.

Nonetheless, Fasset said he has been amazed by how viewers come away from screenings of the film feeling as if it validates whatever perspectives they come from, he said. "People hear what they want to hear, on both sides."

For his part, participating in most of Carr's regime has Fasset, who is 41, feeling less creaky. "I never get colds anymore," he said.

Beyond Carr and Fasset, there are plenty of local people and scenes in the film. One scene is filmed from the apex of Overlook Mountain (where the pair had their first date). Carr hunts for cancer-fighting books at Golden Notebook and shops for cancer-fighting vegetables at Sunfrost Farms, both in Woodstock.

The film leaves off with Carr getting a positive checkup at the doctor's office. Her cancer tumors seemed to have stopped in mid-development, according to the scans, and she becomes more optimistic than ever.

"I actually created a term myself, because most people really need to hear the word remission otherwise they can't take another breath. I call it progression-free remission," she said in the interview. "I talked to my doctor and he said, 'That's pretty smart.' It basically means it's just hanging out. It's like a light switch that's been turned off."

Carr's message goes beyond fighting cancer, she said. "I think anybody who has experienced any sort of adversity will be inspired by our attitude and how we head-butt it. That's the broader message of the film."

'I'm glad they'll have each other for this next step'

Brother and sister who share rare genetic condition to share alternative health-care treatment experience

Editors note: Recent Gulf Coast High School graduate Gregory Lang has battled cancer since he was 3 years old. In February, doctors said Greg had about six months to live. Greg, his sister, Kaitlyn, and their late father, Gregory Weber Sr., suffer from a rare genetic condition, Li- Fraumeni syndrome, causing recurring cancer. The Naples Daily News is following his continuing story.

Gregory and Kaitlyn Lang are trading their childhoods for a chance at adulthood.

They will say farewell to typical teenage fare. Goodbye burgers, tacos and pizza. No more ice cream, cake or cookies.

The pair plans to forgo all temptation — meat, dairy, bread — for the rest of their lives.

Starting Sunday, they will go cold turkey — without the turkey.

Greg, 18, will make the trip to Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach out of necessity, to prolong his life with cancer past doctors’ grim prognosis.

His sister, 16-year-old Kaitlyn, who battled leukemia as a child, will adopt Hippocrates’ raw vegan eating program in hopes of never needing to fight again.

They share a common goal: to make their lives of strenuous sacrifice as long as possible. And for the next three weeks, they’ll share a room, a schedule and, maybe, some inspiration.

"This is a huge step for me, as a mom, because I’ve never left either one of their sides," Ann Lang said. "But I keep focusing on the end result, and I’m so proud of them.

"They need to do this for themselves. My holding their hands can’t help them anymore."

Greg’s necessity

The alternative health-care center is nutritional boot camp. For three weeks, Kaitlyn and Greg will learn to dismiss their teenage cravings through a rigorous schedule of seminars, food preparation courses, workouts and meditation periods.

If the program is successful, Greg’s cancer could be reduced to a manageable state, increasing his life expectancy by months, years, or even decades.

If it’s not, Greg said, nothing, not even hope, will be lost.

"It won’t be a waste of time," Greg explained, his smooth, baby face stony with determination. "If it doesn’t work, for some reason, I’ll know I tried my best with that option, and I’ll have to try something else."

"That’s my baby," Ann said, beaming. "Always optimistic."

After receiving a terminal diagnosis in February, Greg sprung to action, weeding through dozens of options as stories of possible solutions poured in from generous strangers.

As the fatigue and back pain grew, from expanding cancer spots on his pelvis, femur and spine, Greg continued to balk at the idea of more chemotherapy. Previous chemotherapy treatments made Greg sick, and did little to improve his outlook.

The addition of chemotherapy chemicals to Greg’s already fragile body could destroy his immune system, rather than repair it.

"Chemo didn’t work the first time, and doing it now would be the same," he said. "Chemo is a poison. It doesn’t just kill the bad stuff, it kills the good stuff, too."

Greg weighed his options, and settled on the somewhat obscure Hippocrates program, which he learned about when a stranger sent information to Greg’s Gulf Coast High School principal.

"It just makes the most sense," he said. "It can’t hurt me at all. It can only help."

By weeding out all preservatives from his diet, doctors at Hippocrates hope to cleanse Greg’s body, boosting his immune system as he battles his disease. Adding an exercise routine will increase Greg’s energy levels, and hopefully his waning appetite.

"My goal is to help improve my situation," he explained. "I want to have some more time, as much time as possible, and improve the quality of that time.

"I don’t think it’s going to be difficult to make the change, because I know it’s how it has to be."

Kaitlyn’s choice

As her brother watched, Kaitlyn spent this week gorging herself on taboo foods: meatloaf, Chick-Fil-A, pasta.

"It’s so funny to see their two different personalities," Ann laughed. "Greg wants to stop eating those things now, because he figures, ‘Why bother?’ and Kaitlyn wants all she can get."

"I just want to keep going with it," Kaitlyn reasoned. "I never want to eat meat again, so I’m getting all I can now."

Unlike Greg, Kaitlyn had a difficult time deciding whether she would visit Hippocrates and adopt the fruit and veggie life plan.

Kaitlyn suffers from the same genetic condition as her brother, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, turning the possibility of recurring cancer almost into a certainty. Because she is currently healthy, it may be more of a challenge for Kaitlyn to stay motivated.

"Mine’s a self-choice. He kind of has to do it," she said, motioning to Greg. "It’ll be tough, but I really want this, so I guess that will be my inspiration."

By choosing the responsibility of maintaining the stringent plan, the Gulf Coast 10th-grader is sacrificing her youth sooner than her brother, who graduated last month.

During her bout with leukemia at age 8, Kaitlyn put on extra weight, from the steroids she was forced to take. Dropping the few unwanted pounds will be the icing on the cake she can no longer eat.

"It’ll be hard, because I don’t want to give up eating the things my friends eat," she said. "I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am, fighting cancer, and I want to finish what I’ve started."

Lifestyle overhaul

The Hippocrates plan can’t be called a "diet." It’s a far cry from the popular Atkins or South Beach diets.

Adoption of the vegan eating regiment is nothing short of a lifestyle overhaul.

"You can’t go back," Kaitlyn said. "If you were to start eating meat or preservatives again right away, you would get sick."

"It’s going to be life-changing, like having a baby," Ann explained, as her children, and Greg’s 16-year-old girlfriend, Brianna Hanson, laughed at the analogy.

"Well, it is!" she cried out, hushing them. "It’s going to be completely different from everything you’ve ever known."

Ann, the kids’ adopted father, Tim Lang, and Brianna admitted they will be forced to make some big changes in compliance with Greg and Kaitlyn’s new lifestyle.

"I don’t think I’ll have a choice," Brianna giggled. "It’s going to be hard for (Greg and Kaitlyn), but it’s going to be really good for them."

"I think I’m going to learn from the kids," Ann seconded. "In time, we’ll ease into it, just like any other change."

Though they’ll be shirking their teenage eating habits, Greg and Kaitlyn won’t leave their childhoods completely behind. The twosome have already conspired to rig their wireless laptop computers so they can watch television while they are away.

"I think this will be a great re-bonding for them, without any outside clutter," Ann said, rolling her eyes as the restless teens battled for room on the family’s leather couch.

"They’ve gone through so much together in their lives. I’m glad they’ll have each other for this next step."

Naturopaths Recommend Organic Food for Detoxification of Cancer Cells
NEW DELHI: Many people are falling prey to cancer due to increased stress and strain induced lifestyle, and unhealthy eating habits, according to a study by National Academy of Naturopathy.

"The food taken in does not provide live atoms to the body cells. The cells are starved from nutrition and clogged with toxins called cellular constipation leading to mal-absorption and diseases. This in turn brings down immunity which invites host of illness and suffering," says Dr Hemalatha Murthy of the National Academy of Naturopathy.

"The right approach to treat is to adopt naturopathic principles, which emphasise on detoxification, reliving cellular constipation by providing live (organic) food. The live food has enzymes which act as catalyst for detoxification and absorption of nutrients," she adds.

Dr Steven A Rosenberg, who operated on former US President Ronald Reagan's colon cancer, had reportedly put him on diet therapy instead of chemo or radiotherapy that Dr Murthy recalls.

Although surgery has brought about a breakthrough in treating various ailments, disease prevention and health promotion areas have been neglected, deplores Dr Murthy.

In Cancer, where cells multiply uncontrollably, destroying healthy tissue and harming life, surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy are timely relief and not a complete treatment says Dr Murthy.

She says, with the basic understanding about Metastasis (the spread of cancer from its primary site to other parts), a fresh approach of comprehensive drugless therapy is needed. This complete treatment modality for cancer alone can have three-dimensional approach preventive, curative and health promotion.

Organic matter has all these three aspects. Under Naturopathy, juices of certain vegetables and fruits are used as cancer fighting foods.

"Cabbage speeds up metabolism of oestrogen and is useful in Colon cancer. Carrot juice acts as an antidote to lung cancer," says Dr Murthy.

Beet juice rich in sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur, chlorine, iodine, iron, copper, Vitamin B1, B2, B6 niacin is known to have cancer-curing powers.

Juice of citrus fruits like lemon, orange and grapefruit are used as anti-cancer compound. Spinach, lettuce and broccoli juice act as antioxidants.

Indian Gooseberry is a potent antitoxin for cancer cells, says Dr Murthy.

While, wheat bran decreases estrogens (also oestrogen's) in blood, wheat grass juice repair damaged cells in Leukemics.

A cancer patient is also advised to take fiber rich foods like bran, oats, barley, legumes, carrot, beet, turnip, leafy vegetables and cabbage.

On a daily basis, 100-150 gram fruits, 100-gram raw leafy vegetables, 1 fruit or 175-ml. fruit or vegetable juice would be an ideal nutritional meal.

Spirulina, a species of blue-green algae used in juices to boast their nutritional value, increases natural cancer fighting substances in body. Spirulina is 60 per cent all-vegetable protein, rich in beta-carotene, iron, vitamin B-12 and the rare essential fatty acid, GLA.

All these vegetables and fruit juices also inhibit the growth of cancer.

Various internal and external factors act as agents that promote cancer. "Awareness of carcinogens and various causative factors of internal and external environment are important and useful in prevention and treatment of Cancer," she says.

"Asbestos, plastic, leather, synthetic textile factories, aluminium vessel cooking, nuclear wastes, lead filled exhaust fumes of motor vehicle, nitrates, fertilizers, food colouring and chlorination are carcinogenic", says Dr. Murthy.

She further says, "Oral contraceptives - cause liver, uterus and breast cancer; Immuno-suppressant drugs - cause liver gall-bladder, lungs and skin cancers; excessive intake of fat increases risk of cancer of uterus, rectum, colon and stomach; alcohol, excessive caffeine cause cancer of pancreas and urinary bladder".

Treating Breast Cancer with Raw Living Foods
by Mary Lou Sackett
January 26, 2005

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2003. I agreed to have the original incisional biopsy, which determined breast cancer, but without a clear margin. I then agreed to a second surgery to remove the lump and to have a sentinel node biopsy. I was told that I had stage 2 breast cancer. The doctors wanted me to have radiation and a mastectomy, or radiation and chemotherapy. I also was diagnosed with cancer cells on my cervix.

I am a chiropractor who has never agreed with the traditional medical approach, but wasn't sure what to do this time.

A friend of mine who I hadn't seen in about nine years showed up and told me that I needed wheatgrass and that I needed to go to the Creative Health Institute for help. I agreed to try it and went to CHI for two weeks in December 2003. I was still recovering from the second surgery when I arrived, and I also had a coffee addiction to conquer.

I graduated from the two-week program at CHI, went home for six weeks, then returned for three months to participate in the Energy Exchange program. I have followed the program taught at CHI nearly 100%.

I had no idea at first if this would help my breast cancer or how much it would change my life. Now, a year later, I would like to list the exciting "side effects" of my new lifestyle:

- shed excess fifty pounds easily!
- complexion has improved
- joint pains disappeared
- hair growing faster and improved color
- sleeping better
- went through menopause this year with NO symptoms!
- no longer have chest pains or shortness of breath when climbing stairs or walking
- feel calmer, more peaceful - no more constipation (was severe)
- no more cravings for coffee or sugar
- increased stamina
- no more phlegm problems
- skin tans more easily without burning (I'm fair skinned and normally burn easily)
- fibromyalgia-type symptoms gone (a year ago, I could barely walk because my feet hurt so badly)
- bees didn't bother me this summer! (I hope that continues!)
- latest pap smear showed only mild dysplasia. Each test has improved significantly. The doctor keeps saying to me that I need to keep doing whatever it is I'm doing.
- I don't feel "old" anymore
- and best of all, I had an AMAS cancer antibody test in August which was NORMAL.

Thank you CHI, Don, Jeanie and all the staff for supporting me and teaching me what I needed to restore the quality of my life! I am so grateful to my loving family and many friends who have also been very supportive of my efforts.
