ABOUT THE BOREAL FOREST: If you care about clean air and water, you care about the Boreal Forest. Stretching from Alaska clear across Canada to the Atlantic Ocean, the Boreal is an astonishing wilderness, one of the largest intact ecosystems in the world. It holds more freshwater than anywhere else on the planet, and plays an essential role in cleaning the air that we breathe and in fighting climate change. It is also habitat to rare species of wolves, bears, and woodland caribou, as well as half of North America's songbirds. Currently, less than 8% of the Boreal is protected. It is being logged at a rate of two acres a minute, 24 hours a day, much of it to make things like catalogs, junk mail, magazines, newspapers and toilet paper.
Featuring: AS LONG AS THE RIVERS FLOW The Story of the Grassy Narrows Blockade 2,500 square miles of forests, lakes and rivers north of Kenora, Ontario have sustained the people of Grassy Narrows First Nation for thousands of years. Now Weyerhaeuser, the largest lumber company in the world, is driving a wave of destructive logging that threatens to uproot their traditional way of life. In December 2002, a small group of people from the reserve of Grassy Narrows First Nation took up the fight to protect their traditional lands from Weyerhaeuser. They began a blockade that would eventually become the longest-standing in Canadian history. Directed by local filmmaker Dave Clement; Produced in Association with Thunder Bay Independent Media.

Recent documents from Canada provide clear-cut evidence that Weyerhaeuser has grossly violated the legal, social and ecological commitments that allow them to log on public lands in the province of Saskatchewan.

NATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST: Let Target Know It’s Time to Phase Out PVC, the Poison Plastic! [] Join us in sending a message to Target and let them know PVC plastic is out of style and encourage them to develop a plan and timeline to phase out PVC. We'll wear Hazmat suits, hold signs and banners and leaflet Target customers and passersby.
WHEN: Thursday, May 24th, (Noon – 2:00pm) WHERE: Target, Atlantic Terminal, 139 Flatbush Ave at Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, Take the N to Pacific St, M, R, B, D to Atlantic Ave-Pacific St, Q, 2, 3, 4, 5 Atlantic Ave, C to Lafayette Ave, G to Fulton St, or LIRR to Atlantic Terminal.
Target and PVC: Target's aisles are filled with products made from chemicals linked to cancer. They sell many common products such as shower curtains, children's toys and baby products made out of or packaged in polyvinyl chloride, the poison plastic. PVC products are dangerous to our health and environment from start to finish -- in the factory, at home, and in the trash -- releasing poisonous chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects.
The production of PVC products requires toxic chemicals, including cancer-causing vinyl chloride monomer and ethylene dichloride. Target’s chic PVC products are useless without the addition of toxic additives. Children chewing on vinyl toys can be exposed to chemicals linked to reproductive harm. These chemicals are so bad they’ve been banned from use in toys in Europe. The familiar new shower curtain smell is poisonous chemicals being released from the curtain in your home. PVC products sold by Target cannot be effectively recycled due to the many different toxic additives in the product, which can contaminate the recycling batch. Just one PVC bottle can contaminate a recycling load of 100,000 recyclable bottles!
The good news is safe and cost effective alternatives exist. Unfortunately, Target lags behind other retailers in taking action on PVC. Last year, Wal-Mart committed to phase out private label PVC packaging in two years. Other companies phasing out PVC include Nike, Microsoft, Ikea, H&M, and Johnson and Johnson.
