Bird Flu Updates

The number of birds that have been killed so far is of course difficult to tell with accuracy, although estimations are that it could be close to 150 million. All this is being carried out by following a given protocol which tries to be as clean and economical as possible, and which of course does not contemplate any consideration for the victims. The images of the mass killings are shocking. The suffering that all these animals are undergoing is terrible: they suffer significant stress when being captured and put into bags, their wings and legs are often broken due to the weight of other birds bagged with them, they are burnt with lime and finally buried alive. All this adds an even more dramatic feature to the fact that they have been killed in their millions.

But the worst part of it is that if bird flu didn’t exist and these animals weren’t killed in this way they would be massacred nevertheless, basically to be eaten, and this is something that happens continuously and not occasionally. We can now see the killing of the animals because bird flu is in the news, but we rarely see the rest of the killings that usually take place daily for food purposes. The differences are that the methods involved are different (although animals’ pain and distress and their death still occur), but also, significantly enough, that we the public can’t see it. The killing isn't recorded or shown in the papers or on television. But it’s still happening.
