Am very satisfied that this month's Blog Talk Radio podcast turned out really well, communicating some important principles from the Masters about living a spiritual life, successful meditation practice, and union with God.

Guru Kabir says, "The imaginations of the mind are just as innumerable as the innumerable waves of an ocean. If somehow this mind can become quiet by itself, attainment of the true Knowledge-like Diamond will become easily possible (everyone in this world is sad or restless because of lack of Knowledge. This true Knowledge can be attained only when the mind becomes quiet)." One of the effects of adhering to the ahimsa ethics of the Masters is a reduction in tension, in agitation of mind.

The program begins with sixty seconds from an old recording of a Bhajan (chant) of Baba Somanath (disciple of Huzur Baba Sawan Singh), which is quite haunting and otherworldly. Then there is a reading from an ancient Hermetic-Gnostic text from Egypt titled, The Greatest Human Evil is Unacquaintance With God, followed by satsang readings from: The Bijak of Guru Kabir Volume Two (The Shabdas); The Bijak of Guru Kabir Volume One (The Ramainis); The Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir; Songs of Kabir, by Rabindranath Tagore.

The Bijak and Saakhi Granth of Kabir have always been considered primary texts of Sant Mat, and are genuine "Satsang Templates" providing a holistic approach to life on earth following the Path of the Masters.

Other readings are from: The Philosophy of Liberation (Moksha Darshan) by Maharsihi Mehi Paramahansa Ji Maharaj; a Shabd in contemporary English from a recent translation of the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry Volume Two, by Swami Ji Maharaj; a list of essential Sant Mat principals and techniques for a successful spiritual journey, a Bhajan (chant, hymn from India) by Guru Arjan Dev, and a meditative Bhajan of Sant Surdas titled, "Hai Govind." Nothing worthwhile would be accomplished by merely reciting the saints' discourses and by memorising them, so long as one does not take to practice. For this reason (it is stressed that) whatever discourse you hear, go deep into it and practise it and live it, or else hearing it and comprehending it is of no avail. (Saying of Swami Ji Maharaj - Sant Radhaswami Sahib, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose, Book Two, Agra, India)

The source of all energy is spirit (surat-soul) which enlivens both body and mind. Yet without the body, the spirit can have no abode, and unaided by mind, the body cannot find a direction in which to move. The spirit, therefore, becomes indebted to both Kaal [god of time] and Maya [illusion] for making it conscious and making it possible for it to exhaust and remove the covers, so that it becomes fit to ascend.

Now, this debt cannot be redeemed by the jiva [a soul somewhere in time] himself. This is because in the process of exhausting the covers, the jiva 'acts' and performs karmas, and these karmas then constitute a vicious circle in which the debt of Kaal and Maya goes on multiplying. It is only when the jiva takes shelter of the perfect master (Satguru sharan) that the forest of the karmas of jiva which keeps on accumulating in manakash (mind-sky) can be burnt.

Secondly, the jiva has to shed off the layers of Kaal and Maya and while he does so, both of them fight a pitched battle against the jiva who has to struggle hard and then gradually realise that alone, single-handedly and unaided by the Satguru, he will not be able to survive this battle of redemption of old debt laid on his back by the Adi Karma. Then alone he will surrender his ego to the Satguru who then takes over his battle, reinforces him and makes him vanquish Kaal and Maya. (M.G. Gupta, Commentary on Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose)

This is what is meant by the verse:

Satguru sharan gaho mere pyaare, karain jugaat chukaaye: "Seek the protection of the Satguru, my love, after paying the taxes, of karma." (Swami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan. Poetry, Volume 1. Hymn 13. Discourse 8, Agra, India)

21. Sants and Mahatmas say that only the loving devotees will enter the Darbar (Court) of the true Supreme Being, be seated in His august presence and enjoy the bliss of His darshan [vision]. Rest of the Jivas [souls] who are engaged in various forms of Parmarth [spirituality], will mostly be rewarded for their Shubha Karams with happiness for some time. As they are not imbued with the desire for His darshan [vision], and as they do not wish to meet with Sant Sat Guru, they cannot secure admittance into His August Mansion [Realm].

22. The true and perfect lovers of the Lord, after reaching a particular stage, become the beloved of the true Supreme Being. They become so dear to Him that He does not like, at any time, to part with them. Whatever they do or wish is acceptable to Him. In other words, the Mauj [Will] of the Supreme Being and that of these loving devotees become one. These loving devotees are the most beloved of the Supreme Being and are called Mahboob-i-Ilahi (Beloved of God). They alone attain to the status of Sant and Param Sant. This is the acme of Bhakti[ love and devotion]. This is attained by those extremely rare devotees who have no desire of any kind, but to meet with the Supreme Father. Letter One
 
From the Letters of Soami Ji Maharaj to Huzur Maharaj
 
My dearest and dearer than life,
 
I wish you all health and happiness, but keep uppermost in your mind Bhajan, Dhyan and devotion to the Supreme Being. The Grace of the Supreme Being on you is the same, as it was before. Attune yourself to the Will of the Lord. Renouncing all thoughts of the past and future, keep your spirit immersed in Shabd at the time of Bhajan.
 
Fix your spirit in Shabd, and Shabd is in Gagan. Fill your heart with yearning; and heart is at Trikuti.
 
Unite your spirit with Shabd and see beauteous sights. The Til is located within Sukhmana (an artery of the human body, which lies between Ida, on the right and Pingla, on the left), and the form of Jyoti is in the Til.
 
Sit in Bhajan after making your mind and spirit calm, with the help of love and yearning. By the Grace of the Guru, your object will be gained; rest assured, and have no fear whatsoever.
 

From the Sar Bachan Prose, Section Two: Sayings of Swami Ji Maharaj
 
Just as leaves of the trees fall down in the autumn season, in the same manner, this youth also will disappear after a short time. It is therefore desirable that one should not waste it, but should search for his Beloved Supreme Being and engage in His service and worship.......The duty of this jiva [soul] is to serve his Father and his Father is Sat Nam Sat Purusha, and the jiva is an Ansa (i.e. an emanation) of His. However, as he is not able to contact the Supreme Father, how can he serve Him? It should now be noted that the Saints are the Incarnation of Sat Purusha and therefore service to Them is service of Sat Purusha.......
 
The Holy Name Radhasoami -- A Name for the Nameless One (Anami)
 
Those who have no faith in the Holy Name will not be able to achieve their object fully, even though they keep their external behaviour and conduct as correct as possible and also try to have some internal purification and even though they may engage in Japa, Tapa, Samyama and Abhyasa as much as possible. On the other hand, those who have been given the Name by the Satguru and have full and sincere faith in it, will receive the reward even for the repetition of the Name, for penances and for self-control and would also achieve the Highest Abode.....
 
This Holy Name can be obtained from the Sant Satguru and with the help of this Name the root of all the evil propensities of the mind would be cut and the mind and senses would also be slowly and slowly subjugated. If anybody wishes to control the senses by some other method he would experience great difficulty. If he would succeed in controlling one sense organ, the other would create trouble. Exactly this is the condition of persons who repeat the Names mentioned in religious books, i.e. the evil propensities of their mind are not removed though they do repeat the Names. If they repeat the Name received directly from the Guru, i.e. the Name given by the Saints by word of mouth, the evil propensities of their minds would most assuredly be gradually removed. There is no other method in this Kali Yuga for eradicating the evil propensities except through the repetition of this Name......The real Name is very powerful and can remove all kinds of impurities. There is no harm in repeating the Name wherever one likes. Even the worst place would become sanctified by the repetition of the Holy Name at that place. This Name is available with the Satguru and cannot be found anywhere else.
 
No other karmas except devotion to the Name, and to the Satguru are ordained to be performed in the Kali Yuga. 
 

From the Sar Bachan Prose, Section One: On the Teachings of Swami Ji Maharaj
 
It should now be known that the Radhasoami Region is the highest region in the creation and that 'Radhasoami' is the Name of the Supreme Being, the true Lord and true God. The region below this is the Region of Sat Nam, which has been variously referred to by the Saints as Sat Loka, Sach Khand, Sar Shabda, Sat Shabda, Sat Nam and Sat Purusha. This would show that these two stages, i.e. Sat Loka and the Radhasoami Region, are the destination of the Saints and Param Sants respectively, and this is the reason why the Saints enjoy a higher status than others. There is neither Maya [illusion] nor mind in these Regions, and these Regions encompass all the lower regions and creation, i.e. the entire creation is below them and is encompassed by them. The Radhasoami Region is referred to as the Indescribable Region and also as the Nameless Region, because this Region is infinite, eternal and without a beginning and all other regions have originated from it. And Radhasoami is the Deity Who is really not confined to any region and His Region cannot really be called a region.

The opening Verses of Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose in Two Translations
 
Translation One
 
This world is perishable and so also is all that pertains to it. A wise man is he, who, having closely examined the nature of existence here, has realized that it is all transitory and illusory, and consecrated his human form by devoting himself to Bhajan and Simran (listening to inner sounds and repetition of the Holy Name of the Supreme Being) and who, taking the fullest advantage of the various faculties which the Supreme Father has graciously endowed him with, has translated the invaluable jewel within him, which is Surat (spirit [see note below]) or the essence of his being, to its original abode.
 
1. The soul or spirit is known as Surat or Ruh. It has descended from the highest region, that is, the regions of Sat Nam and Radhasoami, and has taken location in this body. It has got enmeshed here in the mind, the three Gunas (attributes), five Tattwas (original conditions of matter), ten Indriyas (senses and organs) etc. and so tight are the bondages of the body and things connected therewith that it has become difficult for it to extricate itself. Freedom from these bondages is called Moksh (liberation). Inner bondages are the mind, indriyas, tattwas, etc., and the external bondages comprise property, family and kinsfolk. The soul, that is, spirit, is so much entangled in these two kinds of bondages that it has even lost consciousness of its original abode. So remote is the destination that it is now difficult for it to return to its original abode without the Mehar (grace) of a perfect guide. Now, all that a man has got to do is to take his Surat (spirit) back to its reservoir and place of origin, that is, Sat Nam and Radhasoami. Until this is attained, there can be no escape from joys and sorrows and pleasures and pains of this world. (Radhasoami Satsang, Agra, India)
 

Translation Two
 
This jagat (phenomenal world) is perishable (nashman) and all its causes and effects are also perishable; that the wise and shrewd man is he who having carefully examined the burden of its activities (karobar) and having discovered that this is a fantasy world (kalpit) and mythical (mithya), has fruitfully and gainfully employed this human body (and its related instruments and material) in the remembrance (sumiran) and contemplation (bhajan) of the Absolute Lord; that having benefited from things with which the Supreme Doer (the Absolute Lord) has equipped this human frame, he has restored his invaluable core (jauhar-i-be-bahaa, i.e. the quintessence of his being or tattva vastu which is the surat or jivatma) into its real, original abode --- the Radhasoami Sphere whence it descended.
 
1. Jagat (the embodied spirit), i.e. surat*** is called as ruh (literally, breath or perfume). And having descended from the highest sphere, i.e. the sphere of Satt Naam and Radhasoami, it has come to abide in this body. And it has got tied up with three gunas (sattva, rajasa and tamas corresponding to oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen respectively) and five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth), and ten indriyas (five instruments or senses of knowledge and five of action or karma indriyas) and mind, etc.
 
Such bonds (bandhan) have come about between it (i.e. Surat) and the body (sharir) and its related objects of pleasure (padara- thas) that release from them has become quite difficult. This release is called moksh (emancipation). The internal bonds refer to cords that bind the surat with senses, elements and the mind. The external bonds imply the strings which tie up the surat with object of pleasure, family and clan (qabila).
 
In both these bonds, the jivatma has become so entangled that it has lost all remembrance and consciousness (denoting or relating to a part of the human mind that is aware of a person's self, origin and history, environment, and mental activity) of its real abode. Its destination (original abode) has become so distant that its return to its original abode has become extremely difficult without the grace of the perfect murshid or Satguru. All that man has to accomplish is to take back his surat or ruh to its head spring and source, i.e., the spheres of Satt Naam and Radhasoami. Until and unless this task is accomplished, there can be no release from the worldly gaiety and grief (khushi and rani) and all the pains and pleasures pertaining to this (phenomenal world).  (The Quintessential Discourse Radhasoami, M.G. **NOTE: "Surat": The surat is a drop from that Ocean --- The Supreme Radhasoami. Anami, beyond space and time, void of vikalp, of boundary, of lineament (roop-rekha), of motion, of modification, of within and without, the Formless, even Soundless and Nameless, in a State of perfect bliss --- "So Am I". The spiritual classics, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Nazm yaani Chhand bandh (Poetry), and, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Bartik (Prose) by Soami Ji Maharaj are very complex books even in Hindi, and all-the-more-so if the attempt is made to translate them into English, especially the mystical poetry. Swami Ji himself says, "How shall I openly speak of its process (the process of creation in Pinda: the material universes, And: the astral dimensions, and Brahmand: Universal Mind realms -- this best remains a mystery), for none can really comprehend its secrets and idioms which I will have to have to employ to reveal them."

Often resembling Near-Death Experiences or OOBE's, Swami Ji's mystic-verses are quite intricate with layers of meaning, and contain countless terms for various heavenly regions, states of consciousness, visionary and auditory experiences he encountered as he was in communion with his Beloved Radhasoami (Soul-Lord, Lord of the Soul). The Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry is a most other-worldly, heavenly document, based upon Swami Ji's own inner travels, attainments and spiritual realizations. "For about fifteen years, Soami Ji Maharaj used to shut Himself up in a room which was within another room [a meditation room within a room of his home in Agra]. He was all the time absorbed in the bliss of Divine Light and Sound meditation." (Huzur Maharaj) After this period of deep exploration of the inner regions and union with his Beloved Radhasoami in Sach Khand, Swami Ji emerged and began his Mission of public satsang and teaching. "In January 1861, Soami Ji started publicly explaining the methods of the Saints to a few people who gathered at his home. This satsang (true association, association with Eternal Truth) continued for nearly seventeen years, during which period about four thousand persons - men and women -- Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Sravagis, and a few Christians were initiated by him into the Path of the Saints, i.e. Radhasoami path (the Path of the Supreme Being). Most of these were householders; but some (about three hundred) were Sadhus [monks] also." (Encyclopaedia of Saints of India, Volume Nineteen: Radhasoami, Criterion Publications, New Delhi)



Soami Ji even made use of some Persian or Sufi mystical terminology at times, and composed some ghazals in Persian. "Soami Ji's father and grand-father were Persian scholars." (The Biography of Soami Ji Maharaj) Soami Ji "acquired a working knowledge of Arabic and Sanskrit", earlier in his life for a time taught Persian, and even "wrote a book in Persian." (Radhasoami Faith - a Historical Study) It seems rather appropriate then for someone like M.G. Gupta, who has translated all six volumes of the Masnawi of Jalaluddin Rumi, the poetry of Sarmad, and the Diwan-i Hafiz, to produce this most excellent new translation of the Sar Bachan Poetry and Prose in English -- all three volumes.



For Swami Ji, love for the Beloved Radhasoami, the Lord of All Souls, is central to traveling upon the right Currents of Sound, Light, and Divine Love within. This bhakti spirit is the right-foundation and the Positive Power to base one's spiritual practice upon.  "Always remember the Lord, and, knowing that He is always with you, imbue yourself with His love." (Soami Ji, in a letter to Huzur Maharaj)

In the Sar Bachan are hymns of praise, conversational prayers directed towards the Friend, the Beloved, the Object of his Communion, the Lover of his soul: the Merciful Lord of the Soul: Radhasoami Dayal. In this loving context of devotional bhakti, meditation practices take the devotee-soul upon an interior journey beyond illusion, beyond time and duality, to an Ultimate Reality, the Ocean of Love, Swami Ji Maharaj describes as "Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent with attributes of Grace, Mercy, Love, Bliss and Peace." Swami Ji Maharaj says, "From one step to another the soul beholds strange things which cannot be described in human language. Every region and everything is utterly beyond words. What beauty and glory! How can I describe them? There is nothing here to convey the idea. I am helpless...Love plays the supreme part. It is all love. So says RADHASOAMI." (Sant Radhasoami Sahab)

Radhasoami is the name for the Nameless One (Anami), the Soundless One (Anadi), in the Highest Region. As Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj once said, "The individual soul has descended....from the Soundless State to the essence of Sound, from Sound to Light, and finally from the realm of Light to the realm of Darkness.....[In meditation practice] we travel back from the realm of Darkness to the realm of Light, from the Light to Divine Sound, and from the realm of Sound to the Soundless State."

Mystic Poetry of Swami Ji Maharaj in, The Quintessential Discourse Radhasoami

If you are a lamp (deepak -- lamp of earthen vessel with wick and oil), I am turned into a moth (patanga) which in the company of the lamp reduces itself to ashes. If you are a black bee I am turned into a small worm (keet which thinks constantly of the bee and eventually becomes it); in my case, I think only of the most perfect, sagacious, skillful, shrewd and wise Radhasoami who has graciously met me. If you are the sandalwood (tree) I am a serpent intertwined with it; by the touch of your feet, I have become serene, tranquil and calm (sheetal bhayee). If you are an ocean, I am like a wave; I rise from you and I retire and return unto you. If you are a pearl, I am the thread (round which the pearl is woven); I, like the thread, never let go and forsake you (who is like a pearl to me).

Lord Radhasoami! Do shower mercy and grace on me now, for you are seated inside each and everyone as the knower of all inner secrets (antaryami). If you are the moon, I am like its phases -- rotation and revolution causing its phases, new moon and full moon -- so that I depend on you and I am conditioned by you both in my waning and waxing. I am like a small girl while you are both my father and mother; day and night I play in your lap.

Selections from the Hidayat Namah (Book of Esoteric Instructions) of Swami Ji

When your eye, turning inward into your brain, pierces the sky within and your spirit leaving your body, flies upward, you will sight the heaven which is the location of the post of Sahasdal Kanwal (One Thousand-Petalled Lotus). A thousand petals of this lotus are performing the work relating to all the three loks [worlds]. By sauntering around this sphere, you will be immensely delighted and you will sight Niranjan (the Spotless), the lord of the three worlds.......

......Via the heavenly route, the surat [soul] keeps on soaring and flying and from afar, whiffs of fragrances of sandal from Malyagir, and other sweet scents of diverse varieties keep on gently blowing and the seeker then hears the innumerable sounds of flutes. Smelling these fragrances and hearing these sounds, the surat continues to soar and move forward.  

When it traverses this plane (of the Rotating Cave), it attains to the outpost (naaka) of Sattlok, whence flows the sound Satt Satt and Haq Haq, emanating from the harp. Hearing this sound, the spirit getting ecstatic goes on piercing and penetrating into the higher sphere and from there the view of golden and silvery streams and rivulets, full of the limpid water of life (aab-i-zulal) and huge gardens of which every tree seems 10,000,000 jojans high, and where instead of fruits and flowers, millions and billions of suns and moons hang from their branches. Innumerable spirits and hamsas sing and blissfully warble on these trees, instead of birds. The spectacle and sight of this sphere is marvellous and indeed ineffable. Seeing this spectacle, the spirit or surat enters the Sattlok and catches the sight of Satt Purush.......

.........Thence the surat [soul] moved upward and made it to the Inaccessible Sphere (Agam Lok) whose stretch is quintillion palang (mahashankh) and the body of the Agam Purush is as vast as a quintillion quintillion palang. The hamsas [heavenly beings] dwelling there have a marvellous and unique form, and bliss and beatitude of that sphere is overwhelmingly wonderful. My spirit (says Soamiji Maharaj) stayed and rested there for a very long period.

Beyond this, the spirit got the glimpses of Radhasoami, that is Anami Purush and merged into Him. That Abode is Infinite, Incalculable and Endless and it is the Real, Eternal Abode of faqirs (Saints). Having attained to this, all the Saints fell into silence; as it is, I also now take to silence.

Living in this world for a short period is good, but instead of wasting one's life doing meaningless things, it is advisable to dedicate it to remembering God. What is the use of living for millions of years if one did not dedicate his time to self-introspection and remembering God, i.e. such life is a total waste; who will keep an account of it?

My real happiness lies in the supreme 'Self.' And the rest in this world is nothing but distress. With one's mind, voice and deeds, one should remember RAM with a pious heart. Kabir Saheb says: 'The essence of life is in remembering God only.'

The mind is very unsteady. It is not the type that would remember God just like that. It will remember God only when it is poked with the goad of true Knowledge [Gnosis, direct experience]. Kabir Saheb says: '...and then know for sure that this mind will not deviate and will engage itself in remembering God.'

Concentrate your mind and remember the Supreme Being without saying anything. Close the outside doors, i.e. quieten your sensory organs and detach yourself from everything. Open the inside doors of your heart, i.e. open yourself internally and concentrate on meditating on God and remembering him.

Remembering God is the simplest and easiest path which has already been shown by the Satguru. With the help of this device I remember God with each and every breath of mine, and I am sure this will enable me to see him one day, i.e. uttering the name of God continuously. Simply remembering God all the time is the easiest process (Sahaj) of leading a spiritual life which leads the devotee to his goal.

You are remembering God in your heart. God resides in the same heart. You will get a huge store of true Knowledge in this very heart, i.e. you will find God and his transcendental Knowledge where you will find your supreme 'Self.'

Devotion through remembering God brings every happiness to life and removes every distress of mind. Kabir Saheb says: 'Remember God! It has a wonderfully powerful attraction. By continuously remembering God, a time comes when the devoted servant (devotee) and the master (God) become one, i.e. he attains self-realization.

Utter the name of RAM (God) continuously. Kabir says, 'Only devotees can understand the Mystery of the fact that there is nothing as compared to remembering God.'

It is a bliss remembering God even for a moment. But only those, who practice it, know it. Remembering God is so easy that one does not have to spend a single penny on it. In fact one does not have to make any extra efforts to have the best results.

"'0 Supreme Being! I have become like You by remembering You all the time. There are no more self-conceit, attachments and desires of the world in me. I sacrifice myself on the true Knowledge of Your name, remembering which enables me to see You all around. There is nothing that exists other than You.'

'0 the Eternal RAM of the temple of my heart! I lost 'my' existence in remembering You continuously. I have become one with You. I exist not without You now. My mind does not wander about any more. Very exalted is the status of the Satguru and very sublime His religion. He has shown the Inaccessible Region. Surat [the soul] ascends to the gateway to Sat Lok [Eternal Realm of Truth] and witnesses a spectacle which is beyond the reach and comprehension of ascetics. Every day she visits the region of Shyam Set, i. e., the Third Eye. Ascending above the senses of perception, she sees the path within, and gains a vision of that region. She is dazed on seeing the Refulgence of the Beloved. Her attention remains riveted on Him, and she is oblivious of her body and mind. All the barriers on the way to the Beloved are removed. She quickly ascends one mansion after another. She rids herself of all her troubles by bathing at the Ghat of Triveni [confluence of three sacred rivers]. Says Tulsi, from the time she became acquainted with the Beloved she, enjoying the bliss of mansions after mansions, reaches her Beloved Lord. (Param Sant Tulsi Sahib, Shabd 72,  Shabdavali)

0 Radhasoami! [Radhaswami, the Lord of the Soul]. Kindly shower your grace on me and 0 Anami, favour me by making a gift of devotion and its modus operandi to me! My mind and my surat [attention-faculty of the soul -- inner seeing] have joined together in coming to you (imploring you for your grace), and with your Refulgence (noor-i-qahir) in their heart of hearts (hiya). Kindly take both of them under your benign protection and shelter and make them perceive the path to your Inaccessible Sphere. 0 Lord! Enable me to behold your Luminous Form in the Jyoti (flame) at the Third Eye and to raise my surat to the One Thousand-Petalled Lotus (Sahas-dal Kanwal) so that I may go up beyond, and get into the Crooked Tunnel and perceive the Sphere of Trikuti [Causal Plane] with great jubilation and liveliness.
