I was down in San Francisco this past weekend to participate at OccupySF, staying with my step-daughter. We both had a great Saturday, leading the OccupySF march of approx 1000 militant chanting folk down Market St. with the banner below that I brought down with me from our Mendocino Coast Occupy actions. That's my daughter, Alexei, on the left edge of the banner and me on the right. It was exhilarating! Attended the Fri and Sat OccupySF general assembly's too.

This "Corporate Rule OR Real Democracy" banner was made in FB by Susan Nutter and Karen Knoebber and maybe some others for our MoveToAmend entry in Mendocino's 4th of July parade, where it was preceded by a sign, "It's Time to Choose!" A brief video of last Saturday's march in SF, with this banner in front, can be viewed at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKa4iZ3N0_g

Long live the revolution!

Stillness at the Center (Pastel on Paper) by Mendocino Coast artist Julie Higgins.

"Art is a language spoken with fluency and unmistakable presence in the evocative works of Julie. Through the use of vibrant, tactile pastels, voluptuous figures and fertile landscapes, the spiritual is made tangible upon discovering its own image boldly portrayed."

        Happy Solstice!

                            ~  December 21, 2010  ~
                    & it's greenmuseum.org's 9th birthday!

Hello everyone,

We've been working behind the scenes to create a new greenmuseum.orgwhich is part of why you haven't heard from us in a while. Over the past two years we've become an all-volunteer service-based organization that depends entirely on unsolicited donations and in-kind support.  What that means is that "progress" is organic and doesn't always stick to a schedule. It also means that we're still committed to supporting this movement and catalyzing deep change.

As you know, greenmuseum.org is part of a growing community of creative thinkers, activists, scientists and educators who are committed to innovative strategies that address global social and environmental issues, through a spirit of volunteerism, compassion and generosity.  Our focus is on the role of art in service to our communities and ecosystems.  For us, the means are as important as the ends.

Why service?
Environmental art is a global movement that thrives on collaboration and has the potential for wide-ranging impact. The more we understand our interconnections, the more we can help each other contribute effectively. For sustainability to work, we need to engage our culture, not just sell it. Through collaborations with artists of all types, we can make existing remediation projects and environmental education more fun, beautiful, culturally and historically resonant and better integrated into our cities, parks and communities. It's an old idea, really, whose time is long overdue.

In this spirit of collaborative service, we have begun to open up the operations of greenmuseum.org to the community which has long inspired our work since we first began 9 years ago. Those of you who might want to help us rebuild and renew the site are invited to join our "workstream" at http://bettermeans.com.  BetterMeans is an open source online management system for collective projects worldwide and the greenmuseum.org workstream at BetterMeans is where you can become part of the collaborative evolution of greenmuseum.org.  If you're interested in volunteering, send us an email and introduce yourself and we'd be happy to give you a tour: volunteer@greenmuseum.org.

In the Holiday spirit, below please find some links to explore for further inspiration.

Best wishes & Happy Solstice!

Sam, Anne, Yolanda, Zach, Richard
And a big thanks to Moe and Tyler and all of you for your continued support!

Podcast:
Arts & Healing Podcast: Greenmuseum, Giftivism & Generosity:
An Interview with Sam Bower & Anne Veh
In this podcast, Arts & Healing Network Director Mary Daniel Hobson interviews Sam Bower & Anne Veh, core team members of greenmuseum about the environmental art movement, giftivism, generosity and advice for artists wanting to engage the natural world. Recently, greenmuseum has begun pioneering a new approach to sustainability as an organization by adopting a gift economy model, and so their entire organization is now run by volunteers.

A Guide to the Impossible:
"It’s  easy to  feel paralysed by the complexities of the world, to feel like  nothing  you do will ever make a difference. Those in authority want us  to feel  that way, even though they tend to be the ones in the minority.  But when  we look back at history we see that every movement, every  single shift  in society began with a small group of friends having an  idea that  seemed impossible at the time."

“lady, i will touch you with my mind”
by e.e. cummings

lady, i will touch you with my mind.
touch you and touch and touch
until you give
me suddenly a smile, shyly obscene

(lady i will
touch you with my mind.) Touch
you,that is all,

lightly and you utterly will become
with infinite care

the poem which i do not write.

Yes!

e.e. cummings Quote

Yes!

the spring has been exquisite and the
summer may be beautiful. But,
tell me with eyes quiteshut
did you love me,will you love me

and perfectly so forth;i see,
kissing you—only kissing
you(it is still spring
and summer may be beautiful)shall we

say years? O let us say it,girl
to boy smiling while the moments kill
us gently and infinitely.

And believe(do not believe)there’ll
be a time when even these leaves will

crawl expensively away. My lady.

by e.e. cummings

Yes!

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

- e. e. cummings, i carry your heart with me
