Here in Mendocino County (Northern Cali), we have our own certification process that goes beyond "organic" and the CCOF process. Horay for CCOF for starting the organic certification process and movement...but they have gotten too big and a bit disconnected from the local. Hence, the reason for our Mendocino Organic Network. You too can create your own local/bioregional process that goes beyond organic. Check out our website, and feel free to contact us for more organizing info: www.mendocinorenegade.com/

Mendocino Organic Network..."Mendocino Renegade"

* was founded in 2001 by a small group of renegades
* supports and promotes local organic and biodynamic farms and businesses
* is structured by its founders to stay small, local, informal, independent, non-governmental, and non-bureaucratic
* is a steering committee of unpaid volunteers who have equal voting power
* is supported by non-tax-deductable donations and maintains open books

The Renegade Project is also supported by farm and business annual fees.

The Mendocino Renegade Weblog is now active. Current products available from Mendocino Family Farmers, and how to obtain them, is kept updated on a regular basis during the season. News, views, and activities around local food and how to obtain it is available hear round. Please visit.

Mendocino Renegade...

* aims to create an inexpensive, credible program of labeling local organically produced products for the benefit of producers (farmers / ranchers), processors (retailers, wholesalers, restaurants), and consumers.
* offers reasonable cost to local producers and processors with minimal paperwork
* assures organic claims
* is manageable for the "certifier"
* minimizes the role of government and politics in organic agriculture

Mendocino Organic Network is a project of Cloud Forest Institute, a 501 c3 non profit organization.

Mendocino Renegade Principles

The Precautionary Principle will guide all standards and allowable materials. The Renegade label is granted to members who register and sign an affidavit to follow these three guiding principles:

1. Wholesome food is grown and processed using sustainable, non-polluting methods as close as possible to those found in nature.
  • No artificial inputs in the form of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers
  • Growing methods that nourish and enrich the soil
  • Pest controls that are benign to the overall ecosystem
  • Genetic diversity is maintained, including wild plants and wildlife habitats
  • No genetically engineered seeds, plants, microorganisms or livestock
  • Animals raised using the highest standards of welfare
  • Animal feed that meets the principles of Renegade Network
  • Use of herbal or homeopathic remedies as first choice wherever possible
  • Renewable resources of energy used wherever possible
  • Packaging is recyclable wherever possible
2. Wholesome food is, wherever possible, consumed within a short distance of where it was grown.
  • Where possible, people should grow at least some of their own food
  • Close links should be encouraged between growers and consumers
  • Consumers, retailers and distributors give preference to food grown in their locality
3. Wholesome food is an integral part of life and community, rather than merely a commodity for profit.
  • Control over food supplies is in the hands of growers and consumers, not corporations
  • Food crops and growing methods take account of local growing conditions, local culture and local needs
  • Everyone involved in food production and processing is able to attain a quality of life which meets their basic needs and allows an adequate return and satisfaction from their work
  • Production, processing and distribution of food are socially just and ecologically responsible
