When you join Care2, you automatically get a profile page, this is 'blank' i.e. not filled out, with a grey frog for an avatar, and it is sometimes 'hidden', meaning that neither you nor anyone else can see it.
Sometimes it also happens - seemingly for no reason - that your formerly visible profile page gets hidden. That's easy to change back, it's the same method as for a new profile.
You can post comments in news stories, on blogs, click-to-donate and so on, but you cannot participate in groups, which are part of the Care2 Community.
In order to participate in the Care2 Community and post in groups, you have to make your profile visible, and agree to abide by the Code of Conduct.
I'll explain here how to do that.
Log in, then go to "My Account" in the "myCare2" dropdown, top right of each Care2 page.
When posting images in Care2, do not copy images from other websites and paste them into your billboard, posts or comments, without first uploading them to your Care2 albums or to a free photohosting site like Photobucket or Flickr. If you do this, it is called 'hotlinking' and is illegal.
It is also dangerous, as the sites you link to may not be safe, and this is why many profile pages are flagged by browsers and anti-virus programs. It is not a Care2 problem, but hotlinked images in profile comments and billboards.
All images you post anywhere in Care2 must come either from your Care2 photo albums, or from your own account at other photo hosting sites such as Photobucket, or Flickr. If you find an image you want to post, you need to first save it to your computer, then upload it to your album, and post it from there.
All members of Care2 are obliged to agree to the Terms of Service, in which you are told, amongst other things, that you may not post any content that infringes any 'proprietary rights'.
'Hotlinking', which means copying an image directly off another website and pasting it into a comment, group post, or profile page billboard is nothing more than a form of theft.
If you copy images from any other websites and paste them into your posts, then the owner of that website pays every time your image is viewed. This is known as 'stealing bandwidth' and it is illegal.
Imagine if you wandered into a house in your neighbourhood and plugged a cable into a plug in their livingroom, so that you could use their electricity? Or attached your garden hose to a tap in their garden so that they paid for the water you used.
Hotlinking is the same thing, somebody else pays for the images that people are 'stealing'.
This is a revised copy of a post made in my help group. For more help or info, please join that group.
For those of you who have been having problems logging in to Care2 because the page says 'checking login information' at the top, or those who can log in despite that, but can't post or check email - hang in there! Care2 are working on the problem, which has affected a lot of members, no matter what browser they're using.
Although this hasn't helped most people, it's still important, whenever you have an issue with a site, to clear your cache and delete your cookies, then restart your browser. Here's how to do that for the main browsers. Be sure that you know your Care2 password, as you will be logged out if you were logged in at the time.
You can contact CareTwo Support (Eric) at this email address, and give him details of the problem you're having at Care2 with page links if possible, as well as a link to your profile, and info about what browser you're using (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.)
Or write to me at email@example.com if you need help with that.
Or ask a friend to check / post in this thread in my help group. You need to be a member to read the threads in that group.
Click the Compatibility View icon on the Address bar, and the page will reload.
Then try again.
If that still doesn't work for you, then download and install Firefox, which is a much better browser anyway, and has fewer problems at Care2. You can keep 2 (or more) browsers installed on your system and change from one to the other whenever you want to.
Many people have contacted me about this problem, so here's a copy of a post made in my Help group about it. It's been going on for a long time, no sign of it being fixed by Care2. I guess that they don't think it's important enough to fix, although it's happening to everyone, and it makes navigating the site even slower than usual.
Every time your cursor passes over a profile avatar, a popup box appears, but unlike the usual avatar popup, this one is blank, and it doesn't go away, just keeps on trying to load. This is because you must have moved your cursor off that profile avatar before the box had finished loading - and they are loading slowly these days.
The quickest way to get rid of it is to find which avatar it is by following the popup trail, and put your cursor directly over that avatar, so that the box appears as normal. Once you do that, it will go away after a few seconds as they normally do
Or you can just refresh the page, but that takes a while and it's annoying to have to keep doing that.
In calmer times, this update would have appeared on 19 February 2013.
Oracle's Critical Patch Updates for Java normally come out on the Tuesday closest to the 17th day in every fourth month. (Yes, I find that a little Byzantine, too.) But Oracle brought its February 2013 Java patch forward, noting the "active exploitation 'in the wild' of one of the vulnerabilities affecting the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in desktop browsers":
Oracle isn't saying which of the RCE (remote code execution) holes is the one that's actively being exploited, but bringing the patch forward is probably a good idea anyway.
According to the latest Oracle Risk Matrix there are 50 fixes, 49 of which might be remotely exploitable. That means merely visiting a web page might be enough to infect your computer.
The quick way to grab the latest version is to head over to
Second issue concerns Internet Explorer 8, which is also under attack from hackers and is not safe.
Please check this article at Microsoft's information site for help, and download and run the Fixit that they provide. Then look out for the critical emergency update that Microsoft is putting out Jan. 14th/15th, and install it immediately.
IE7 is also affected - IE9 is not.
Best security solution of all - use Firefox!
Mozilla Firefox is free and imo way superior to Internet Explorer. (click on the link above to download). And, most important, Mozilla don't track you and spy on you like Microsoft and Google do.
Here's a lovely story I ran across - a good Zen lesson to keep in mind if people are dumping on you.
One day I caught a taxi and informed the driver I needed to go to the airport. As we were driving in the right lane, suddenly a black car backed out of a parking space right in front of us.
The taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car spun his head around and began yelling obscenities at us. The taxi driver just smiled and waved at the person; and I mean, he was friendly in his response.
Therefore, I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when the taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'Garbage Truck Dharma.'
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they will dump it on you.
Do not take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Do not take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.
The bottom line is that grounded and centered people do not let garbage take their day. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ... love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who do not. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!
