Once again! I haven't posted in quite some time....so i figured it had to be something special. Here's a video of a talk by a very special and talented scientist. Richard Feynman was a physicist who specialized in quantum electrodynamics. It's a field of physics that is very deep and complicated. But...Feynman has more to share with us than what can be gleaned from complex mathematical equations. Here he shares with us his love of discovery. What makes a person a brilliant scientist? Why is one extremely smart individual more likely to make significant breakthroughs in science and technology than another? Perhaps it's their vivid imagination...and their love of "the pleasure of finding things out".

It's been a while since i've posted, so i'm feeling kind of like a slacker here...I figure Easter is a good time to break the silence and share something of my feelings about this holiday.

For some it is a religious day...for others a day to take pleasure in what the Easter Bunny brought.
For me it is a celebration of the Earth....and a good day to appreciate how much we need her. How rare and special she is and how we couldn't live without her.
I've heard her referred to as "Gaia", and i like the concept and the idea of treating our planet as a living thing, for without the life she nurtures, she would be just another rock or ball of gas or chunk of ice in the Cosmos.
So while you're enjoying your Cadbury eggs and chocolate bunnies, take a moment to look around and appreciate the beauty of the living Earth around you...you can't live without her.

I've just begun reading Stephen J Gould's "Wonderful Life". So far (50 pages) the book is fixating...that is, hard to put down. I love Cambrian life. It is perhaps the most important and diverse life the planet has ever seen. Most of the animals that lived in the Cambrian left no descendents. These were the most unique and important experiments of evolution. From here nature determined where evolution would proceed for the next 500 million years. "Wonderful Life" discusses, primarily, the Burgess Shale fossils in Canada. As usual Stephen J Gould gives his views on evolution, extinction and taxonomy as well as how science treats these subjects.

This is a GREAT read! If you haven't read it yet, treat yourself to this book! Gould at his greatest!
