I must confess that i swiped the name of this blog from Stephen J Gould's "Natural History" magazine column. Its ultimate origin lies in the quote 'There is grandeur in this view of life' from Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species".
I've always liked the phrase and respected the writer and scientist. So this is a kind of tribute to him...it might not always be about science. But i'll try to keep it interesting Thanks for stopping by. :<)
I've just begun reading Stephen J Gould's "Wonderful Life". So far (50 pages) the book is fixating...that is, hard to put down. I love Cambrian life. It is perhaps the most important and diverse life the planet has ever seen. Most of the animals that lived in the Cambrian left no descendents. These were the most unique and important experiments of evolution. From here nature determined where evolution would proceed for the next 500 million years. "Wonderful Life" discusses, primarily, the Burgess Shale fossils in Canada. As usual Stephen J Gould gives his views on evolution, extinction and taxonomy as well as how science treats these subjects.
This is a GREAT read! If you haven't read it yet, treat yourself to this book! Gould at his greatest!
Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection underlies all modern biology. It enables us to decipher our genes and fight viruses, and to understand Earth's fossil record and rich biodiversity. Simple yet at times controversial, misunderstood and misused for social goals, the theory remains unchallenged as the central concept of biology. Charles Darwin, reluctant revolutionary, profoundly altered our view of the natural world and our place in it.
The American Museum of Natural History is one of my favourite places to be. There's a seemingly endless supply of wonders to delight the eye and the mind!
