UPDATE!!! GOVERNOR CRIST HAS STEPPED IN AT THE LAST MINUTE AND VETOED ALL THE CUTS PROPOSED THAT WOULD HAVE DESTROYED FLORIDA FOREVER!
Please friends, even though this call for action was slated for today, don't stop taking action, anyone who has not please it is never to late to speak up!
From: Defenders of Wildlife, Florida Office

Subject: EMERGENCY: Florida Legislature Poised to Gut Florida Forever Tomorrow!
Is Florida Forever history?  Tomorrow, the state legislature could cut 80% of the funding for this landmark conservation program in an unbalanced, short-sighted effort to axe state spending.  Take action to help save Florida Forever.
Florida Forever is the largest public land buying program in the nation and has helped protect more than one million acres of land and safeguard irreplaceable habitat for nearly 200 endangered species -- from sea turtles to gopher tortoises, to Florida panthers and black bears.
The fate of Florida Forever -- and the endangered wildlife it helps protect -- hangs in the balance.  Send a message to Governor Crist and your legislators right now and let them know you want our state's proud land conservation legacy to continue.
Florida Forever was established to safeguard vital wildlife habitat and environmentally sensitive land -- but it also makes Florida a better place to live by protecting our water resources, saving our coasts, preserving cultural and historical sites, and providing us with more parks and recreation areas.
Despite the amazing success of this landmark program, the legislature is poised to slash funding for this landmark program tomorrow.
The legislature made this decision with little advance notice and may not realize how important Florida Forever is to Floridians like you and me.  That’s why it’s so urgent that our state leaders hear from us today.
Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the nation. That means that land conservation efforts are crucial to preserving the wild lands we have left for future generations.  And with the price of land at record lows, now is not the time to cut this vital program -- and its investment in local real estate markets -- off at the knees.
Defenders of Wildlife and our allies in the Florida Forever Coalition are working overtime to protect Florida Forever.  But we need your support to succeed.
The final vote will happen tomorrow, so please take action now to let your legislators know you support giving Florida Forever the funding it needs to continue to protect our special places and the imperiled animals that depend on them.
Thank you for taking urgent action to save Florida Forever,
Laurie MacDonald, Defenders of WildlifeLaurie Macdonald
Florida Program Director
Defenders of Wildlife
Why we need to support Florida Forever now more than ever:
  • Times are hard, and we all need to shoulder responsibility, but that doesn’t mean we should cut our conservation programs off at the knees.
  • Other programs should share equally in budget reductions. An 80% budget cut is not fair and fails to recognize that the state’s economy relies on a healthy environment.
  • Floridians strongly support land conservation and wildlife protection programs, even when times are tough.
  • Breaking land acquisition contracts with landowners now will make them less likely to undertake the lengthy process required to sell land to the state in the future. Willing landowners are essential partners in conservation efforts across the state.
  • Land acquisition projects help fuel the state and local economy, providing jobs to local workers and invigorating ecotourism across the state.
  • Florida Forever?Green Sea Turtle (Photo: David Burdick, NOAA)
Protecting habitat for sea turtles and other imperiled wildlife will be put on hold if drastic cuts are made to Florida Forever.

PLEASE! Act Now to Protect Florida Forever 12:17 AM

fwflogoFlorida Wildlife Federation ACTION ALERT

The Legislature is poised to make severe reductions in Florida Forever -- 80-90% of THIS YEAR's land buying funds are proposed for elimination.

The final legislative vote is Wednesday, January 14, and the legislation will then go to Governor Crist for his signature.

Please e-mail or fax your legislators today with the following messages:
Full funding for Florida Forever is necessary -- and is consistent with the Legislature's unanimous approval of the the ten-year renewal of Florida Forever in the 2008 Session.
Provide funds for Florida Forever land purchases that have been negotiated in good faith with land owners and are ready to be executed.
Suspending or delaying Florida Forever projects will result in higher costs to taxpayers -- land that now can be acquired at a reasonable cost will soon be much more costly or unavailable.
Funding for land management must also be continued for all state conservation lands.  Don't raid land management trust funds.
Contact information for Legislators can be found at

This is a Best Friends Member Message

Falling LeavesCarlos contacted us because he lost his job, he has to move and can no longer care for his beloved dog Popo. Carlos picked up Popo off the street in 2003 and Popo was really sick with flea infestation and hot spots. Carlos got him stabilized so now Popo only gets the hot spots occasionally on his feet if he walks too far.

Popo is a wonderfully affectionate, 6 year old neutered male. His breed is the old style German Shepherd with the straight legs and straight back. He gets along well with other dogs and is fine with all people. He is up to date on all his shots and walks on a leash, just not too far. He does have some hip dysplasia and  the vet is saying that he probably also has an immune deficiency that comes out as occasional skin ailments.  Popo continues to need raw eggs added to his kibble to stimulate his appetite and to help with skin.Popo also takes antibiotics and immune system medication. He mostly needs a loving, low-key home where his medical condition can be monitored and treated when necessary

Carlos would also welcome help with the transportation from Dade County, Florida to College Station, Texas which would enable him to possibly keep Popo.

Can you provide that special home for Popo?

Or can you help with his transport?

You can also help by printing and posting this message and passing it on to your friends and family.

Please call Carlos at (305)299-3163 or email him at  mcarlosm@bellsouth.net

Urge Amazon.com to Stop Selling Fur

Today: Call-In Day: And Click Below To Send An E-mail!

Fur Free Friday is almost here and activists everywhere are hunkering down to finalize their plans for the most prolific Fur Free Friday yet! In fact, this year, events are taking place in over 75 cities on every continent besides Antarctica! Hopefully there is an event close enough for you to participate. If not, you can still help fur-bearing animals by asking Amazon.com to stop selling fur today!

Every year, over 50 million animals are brutally killed and skinned to make fur products. While many companies have pledged to go fur-free, other popular companies, such as Amazon.com, continue to cause and profit from animal suffering.

After receiving nearly 12,000 emails, Amazon.com’s competitor, Zappos.com, recently stopped selling all items with fur and pledged to stay fur-free. Now we need you to help us convince Amazon to follow Zappos' lead and become fur-free, as so many other retailers - including Nike, Gap, J. Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Forever 21 - have.

What you can do:

Please click here to send an e-mail to Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos politely asking him to remove fur from the Amazon.com Web site permanently! Then follow up with a letter, fax and/or personal email:

Amazon.com Inc.
1200 12th Ave. S., Ste. 1200
Seattle, WA 98144
(206) 622-2335; press O to speak to an Amazon.com operator

Talking Points:

  • I was disappointed to learn that Amazon.com contributes to the suffering of millions of animals by selling real fur--and thrilled to learn that your competitor, Zappos.com, has recently gone fur-free.
  • As you know, animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages.
  • Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning.
  • With so many alternatives to animal fur available, it's time for your company to remove fur from its collections permanently. Whether it comes from minks, foxes, raccoons, chinchillas, beavers, rabbits, or lynxes, fur looks best on its original owners.
  • Please do the right thing: Follow Zappos' lead and ditch the fur.

All of these talking points are already inserted in the e-mail you can send in ten seconds by clicking here: http://ga0.org/campaign/FFF_Amazon

Then make a donation to our Fur Free Friday campaign here: https://secure.ga0.org/02/adoptanactivist_FFF

Thank you!

Get out the Vote!

There is a lot of excitement about this year’s presidential race - particularly here in Florida.

We've endorsed a number of good pro-environmental candidates in the Sunshine State and wanted to share them with you.

In addition to the endorsement of Barack Obama for President and Joe Biden for Vice President, Sierra Club Florida has taken a position in a variety of other races that we encourage you to consider.  The president cannot reform government alone.  There are many layers in the political process and the president requires support in order to implement favorable environmental policies and legislation.

Even if you think that your candidate is going to win or the polls appear to be favorable, please be sure to vote.

From the Endangered Species Act to “drill, baby, drill” right here in Florida, the threat is real.  The Florida Sierra Club has interviewed a number of candidates and we have included our recommendations.  You can also find them here:

Dear Friends of Florida's Environment:

I'm Florida Bear and I'm excited to be the official spokesbear for Amendment 4 -- Florida's Conservation Amendment. It's an important amendment for conservation in Florida and we need your help to let people know about it. We have two ads for Amendment 4 that I would love for you to see and send to your friends and family. Please watch them on my YouTube channel.

In our first ad, I bring a message from the animals in the forest asking Floridians to vote for Amendment 4 to save our homes. Click here to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ProwMCeHy2U

In our latest ad, I'm joined by Ms. Deer who helps me talk about why Amendment 4 is good for conservation and the environment. Click here to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_eoGgKKtXk

Please share these ads with your friends and vote for Amendment 4 to help protect me, my family and my neighbors. Amendment 4 helps protect our environment by providing tax incentives to preserve private lands from development.

You can learn more about Amendment 4 on our Web site at www.Amendment4Florida.com. You can also become my friend on Facebook and keep up with my adventures on Twitter.

But, most of all, you can help us by forwarding this e-mail to your friends and family and encouraging them to Vote for Amendment 4 on November 4. Remember, Amendment 4 is for conservation and our environment.

Thank you for your support, and please share new Amendment 4 commercials with your family, friends and neighbors.

I wanted to let you know that in this year's election, Floridians have a great opportunity to vote to help protect future generations of people and wildlife!

In the coming weeks, please vote 'YES' on Amendment 4 to help protect Florida's wildlife and natural resources.

Save Land. Save Wildlife. Vote Yes on 4.

NOTE: Florida's
Early Voting begins
15 days before Nov.4!

Experts project that at present growth rates, Florida will lose another 7 million acres of open spaces to urban development by 2060. Land where today Florida panthers, deer and black bears roam could become tract housing, shopping centers and parking lots. Estuaries that hold bass, bream and wading birds could become condos.

Amendment 4 provides Florida an opportunity to forever protect wildlife habitats, water resources and recreation areas before they vanish.

The initiative provides incentives for property owners to set aside land for conservation without spending new tax dollars. It ensures that Florida's open spaces protect fish and wildlife habitats, conserve water resources and preserve opportunities for our children and grandchildren to hike, swim, hunt and fish.

So please be sure to vote 'YES' to Amendment 4!

For more information or to find out how to help pass the initiative, go to
amendment4florida.org

Thanks so much,

http://getactive.peta.org/ct/o72iNLE184Wu/Please take a moment to read this urgent e-mail and forward it to anyone you know living on the Gulf Coast.

Three years after Hurricane Katrina struck, Hurricane Gustav is expected to hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast on early Monday.

For the past week, in anticipation of Gustav's landfall, PETA has been aggressively
reaching out to local residents and the press with the lifesaving message that there are critical preparedness steps that can be taken to ensure their safety and that of their animals.

Following Hurricane Katrina, our work on the ground and behind the scenes helped ensure that animals must now by law be included in government disaster evacuation plans—which is why so many animals and their human companions have already gotten out of Gustav's path. Our trained staff and volunteers are prepared to respond to the areas in most critical need once Gustav makes landfall. And we have been able to verify that the animals PETA reunited with their families in the wake of Hurricane Katrina have already evacuated with their human companions!

Please visit
PETA.org for updates about this crisis—and please pass this e-mail along to anyone you know you might be in harm's way because of Hurricane Gustav or Tropical Storm Hanna which is approaching the Eastern Seaboard.

Thank you for your support and for all that you do to help animals.

Sincerely,

Daphna Nachminovitch
