Category: Salads and Dressings
Special Considerations: Vegan
50 g dried seaweed (black, hair-like, usually Chinese)
200 g marinaded bell peppers/ paprikas
1 onion
3 cloves of garlic
salt pepper nutmeg
cooking oil

Soak the seaweed for at least one day (the more you soak it - the softer it becomes, if you soak it too little you'll have to cook it, but then some of the vitamins and minerals will escape, as will some of the taste of the sea - which is actually a good idea if you're cooking for kids), drain and rinse, chop it up (i do this with kitchen scissors). Chop the garlic and onion, heat oil in a pan, add the garlic, then add the onion, fry until golden. Add drained marinaded peppers (if they were marinaded in oil, you can add some of the oil). Add the seaweed, salt and spices, stir very well. Cover and leave over low heat for a half-hour to simmer (come back to stir sometimes, check there's enough oil/liquid to avoid burning). Can be consumed as a cold salad or a warm side-dish. Some people like to add some vinegar if the marinade of the peppers isn't strong.

Category: Beans
Special Considerations: Vegan
100-200 grams of white beans (soaked overnight)
mushroom stock/ boullion (from cooking dried mushrooms - use just the liquid part)
half an onion
3 garlic heads
salt&pepper to taste

Cook the white beans until soft, puree with the mushroom stock, the fresh onion and garlic, add spices and salt, regulate liquidity with mushroom stock: can be consumed as a pureed side dish (instead of mashed potatoes), or a soup.

Oh, God! Not another busty sweet-voiced pop star representing Ukraine in Eurovision-2008!!!
Ani Lorak (or, if we are to believe her passport, Karolina) is today Ukraine's biggest female pop star. Tabloids, magazine covers, charity balls, advertisements, mainstream music television, posters, calendars - you name it, she's there! Snatched the queen's reigns from Ruslana (Eurovision fans will know the connection), who's lately been promoting Ukraine internationally rather than herself domestically. Karolina can reach the same octaves as Mariah Carey with her incredibly strong rnb-ish voice. But will that make up for her lukewarm stage personality? In a charisma competition she's likely to finish waaay behind Eurovision2003-winner-slash-energy-ball Ruslana, and Eurovision 2007 runner-up lovable transvestite comic act Verka Serdiuchka. Perhaps, she'll contest the honourable-mention 7th position with spunky-sugary miniskirted Tina Karol... (aside: i wonder if she initially wanted to take the pseudonym Ina Karol, in order to complete the anagram conspiracy of Ukrainian showbiz??!!).
The latest trend in Eurovision is a rejection of mainstream Playboy appeal in favour of FLAVOUR, as demonstrated by non-photogenic Marija Sharifovich (2007 winner), and hideous monsters of Lordi (2006 winner).
The song is yet to be decided - it remains our only hope to harpoon some originality and distinguish our little Ani from all the other lip-glossed salon-tanned fishes in the sea.

Only democracy can defeat extremists

Benazir Bhutto site, Oct 21, 2007

I did not come this far in life to be intimidated by suicide bombers. There is a battle raging in Pakistan for the hearts and minds of a new generation. It is a battle for the future of Pakistan as a democratic nation.

The new generation will choose moderation or extremism; it will choose education or illiteracy; it will choose dictatorship or democracy; it will choose tolerance or bigotry; and it will choose peace or war. I returned to Pakistan this week to lead the fight for democracy. With the blood of my supporters on the streets and on our clothes, I reaffirm my commitment to these values.

She knew it was going to happen, and still she persevered. She was determined, and unafraid. She would've had to have been, to become the first elected female leader of a Muslim state.
A highly controversial figure. But then, in a world of dirty politics, who isn't?
The crucial question now is: what is to become of the opposition in Pakistan? Or what does the future hold for this country without such a charismatic alternative - more state-of-emergencies?
