Seal protest planned for Shea's office

A local woman is spearheading an seal hunt protest here.


Brenda Armour is attempting to rally local opponents to the hunt for a protest in front of Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea's office in Summerside at noon on June 30.


Armour has been advertising the protest at online classified sites for the past week and is hoping to attract up to 100 people to participate peacefully.


She is calling the demonstration a grassroots project by concerned Islanders opposed to the hunting of seals for fashion purposes.


"We don't need to buy fur," she said. "There are alternatives."


Armour decided to organize the event because she believes there's a lack of Maritime voices in most anti-seal hunt protests.


She sighted two cases where American PETA members traveled to P.E.I. to protest as examples.


This past week two American women showered outdoors in Charlottetown to raise awareness of the amount of water used in preparing meat and last January another American woman threw a tofu pie into Shea's face.



Armour hopes to advance the goal of ending the seal hunt.
