Earlier research by GOLDENROOM revealed that an inter caste relationship predisposed couples to the risk of honour related violence.

This is despite the fact that caste discrimination in India is illegal.

One brave man, Premnath Sambavaar tells GOLDENROOM his tragic story of his inter caste marriage and the extraordinary struggles he now faces to be reunited with his wife, Sindhu

A warm welcome back to a new year and a new issue for GOLDENROOM Online Journal for Cross Cultural Relations.

And what could be a more heartfelt return than this month’s issue theme of ‘Love and Relationships’.

Our cover story this month is one of love across caste boundaries and comes from Premnath Sambavaar who is still faithfully waiting for the day his wife, Sindhu is returned to him.  We examine the case of another family, this time in the United Kingdom who were also bound and determined to prevent their sister having a Mixed ‘race’, Mixed faith, same-sex relationship, in our article From The Bench, ‘The case of the exemplary cross cultural family’.

On a joyful note, we welcome contributor Tim Sullivan. Tim has been married for thirty years to his Japanese wife, Kumuri, so they are well qualified to share some essential tips for cross cultural marriages in ‘Married to an Alien. Can Cross Cultural Love Conquer Culture?’. And DHANAK in India will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with a gathering of over 300 Inter Faith couples.

To be even more relationship savvy peruse the hard hitting research of Ben Acheson on the difficulties adoptees have in forming healthy relationships. Or pick up GOLDENROOM’s recommended read this month, from Dr. Phil McGraw on fixing your relationship with yourself and your partner. On the political and human rights front we have conducted some bold research in: ‘Strange Bedfellows. Homosexuality, Homoeroticism and Ultra Nationalist Movements’.

We expect that a few cross cultural matches will likely be made at Chef Ali Amla’s Indian Cookery Course and also have advice for Great First Dates from GOLDENROOM Dating. . A three month GOLD membership with GOLDENROOM Dating is still only £59.70 so making a cross connection couldn’t be easier. If you aren’t single then perhaps consider buying this for a friend. After all doesn’t everyone like to travel to a wedding abroad?

And finally, please take a moment to nominate GOLDENROOM at the National Diversity Awards, so that we can continue to help you and yours celebrate your Cross Cultural relationships.

Kind Regards,

Dr. W.J.Tuinstra

Curl Up With A…Great Book

‘Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul’

Arielle Ford

Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul’ has been out several years now but this is still an inspirational read of touching, real life experiences with the mysteries of life that connect us all.

As one reviewer said, it is better than hot chocolate because it makes you warm inside with none of the calories.

This collection of enthralling stories about miracles, near-death experiences, encounters with holy men and women, divine interventions and amazing coincidences are shared by people from a range of backgrounds, diverse faiths and cultures. These are the extraordinary moments of everyday people with everyday lives, and herein is the real value of ‘Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul’, that spirituality and experiences beyond ordinary consciousness are not reserved for holy hermits, but belong and are a part of each one of us.  In so many ways, this book gives insight into how people perceive and experience life’s mysteries, with a common, assuring thread that there is a unseen and loving presence guarding over us.

At times challenging, the range of stories in this book will stretch beliefs as readers encounter the unbelievable and the unprovable. Yet at the same time ‘Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul’ is as informative as it is comforting.

‘Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul’ is also a gem for it includes contributions from many leading figures of the spirituality movement, including Neale Donald Walsch and Louise Hay. This grounds the content with an accessible authoritative anchor, which guards the book from being a load of flaky coincidence.

This is a great read, not only for people of diverse faiths and spiritual persuasions, but for anyone seeking a real, tangible proof of transcendent spirituality that makes a difference to people’s lives. There’s no preaching here, no recruitment or programmes. Just honesty joy and wonder at the mysteries that enrich our lives. This unassuming, uncomplicated exploration of cosmic threads is great introduction to spirituality. Even though, ‘Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul’ is a paperback, we feel it is a real keepsake book. Add it yours or a friend’s collection and keep returning to it like an old clutch of friends, whose lives and experiences will touch your soul.

Golden Man does not owe his genesis to physicality at all. He is the product of imagination and so this archetype’s attributes are of the mind. Golden Man is a person who understood both East and West, one who is as at home in the modern business world as they ware in a traditional ascetic retreat. Golden Man lives at the juncture of the old word and the new, at the confluence of the Oriental and the Occidental. Because he is made of the different elements of the world, he understands the movements of the world. Because in him is represented the polarity of human experiences, he is a force of unity, for oneness, there is no conflict in Golden Man for he has learned to derive strength from all his inheritances; he is securely anchored in a multidimensional world.

Finally dual, multiple and Mixed identities are beginning to be recognised and counted, and Mixed people and people in Cross Cultural relationships stand poised at a critical threshold.  No longer do people have to choose one world over another, but the uniqueness of belonging to one or more cultures is being seen as a valid and a valuable resource.

If Golden Man has a community then, of similar individuals, who are of, Mixed ethnicity, interracial, inter faith, bilingual, dual heritage, dual- nationality or multi-cultural, whose worlds are never singular and fixed, where multi heritage is a resource and a cause for celebration, then the place for such a rich assemblage, would be here, this virtual place, a gathering of perspectives, experiences and honoured identities. That place is called, GoldenRoom.

As the festive holidays converge, let’s not forget about Solstice and Yule, and other celebrations important to Pagans. Goldenroom’s Inter Faith expert, Marjorie Crombie speaks with two leading Pagans and offers insight into a much misunderstood and maligned faith.

‘My daughter went to school and was having issues of not fitting in with other groups, the other racial cliques. The Black girls didn’t think she was African American enough. The Filipino girls didn’t think she was Filipino enough. It didn’t surprise me that she had issues, but I just knew I had to handle it right off the bat.’

Dual National couples- where the parties come from different countries and have different nationalities-  face many difficulties with the bureaucracy and governments of their respective states as they try to sort out their immigration status so that they can begin their lives together.

But for gay couples like, Ali Choudry and Dr. Mark Hynd those struggles have been especially unfair and heartbreaking.

Ali Choudhry and Dr Matthew Hynd were one of the first gay couples in Queensland to register their civil union on 12 March, 2012. Unfortunately their union was short lived due to the Queensland Government retrospectively making such unions null and void 12 weeks after their ceremony.

Ali Choudhry’s visa based on the recognition of his relationship with Dr. Hynd was refused. Choudhry says he cannot understand why theirs is not considered a legitimate long-term partnership. The more pressing issue is that he now faces deportation from Australia to Pakistan.  Choudhry grew up in the USA and has never lived in Pakistan, nor does he speak or read or write Urdu or Punjabi. Moreso, as a homosexual, Choudhry most certainly faces life imprisonment or worse in Pakistan where homosexuality is illegal.

Please sign this petition so that Choudhry can remain in Australia with his partner and so that all cross cultural couples can live their lives with dignity and free from fear.
