What is Reiki

The word Reiki is comprised of two Kanji characters, Rei & Ki.  Translated into English, Reiki means Universal Life Force Energy.   

Universal Life force permeates every object within the universe.  “…each and every thing that exists in the universe possesses universal life force…  the essence of all that is…” Mikao Usui, founder of Reiki.  

Universal life force within the Human body is called “life energy”.  It is this energy within our bodies that gives us the ability to live our lives with strength, purpose, and the natural ability to heal.  

You may recognize “life energy” as called, prana, chi, vitality, aura, magnetism…  Each name represents the same energy and in our case we call it Reiki as to define both life energy within the human body and Universal energy permeating all things.   

Back in the 1900’s, a Japanese Monk & Educator named Mikao Usui (1865-1926) developed a system in which to use Reiki, to make Reiki a practical tool in which to harness this energy and focus its power.   

Usui Sensei called this system Usui Reiki Ryoho and it spread very quickly throughout Japan as an effective “Hands on Healing” technique.   

Thus, today the term Reiki refers to both the Universal Life Force Energy and the Usui system to make active use of that energy.

GASSHO MEDITATION:

       Gassho is a common practice in many eastern traditions. It is called "Namaste" in the Indo-Tibetan traditions. Gassho meditation is practiced in the morning and /or evening, alone or in a group. It does not require any prior knowledge of meditation or yogic body postures. Anyone of any age can do it.
        The aim of this meditation is to help clear one's mind before a healing session. It can be used as a breathing method to develop awareness of Reiki energy and to help focus the mind. . It clears the mind, calms the spirit, and prepares the 'vessel' (body) to receive and hold the Reiki 'henomenon'. With regular practice, your mind and body will soon get accustomed to getting into a deep meditative state of oneness with everything in the universe. No previous knowledge or experience in meditation is required as this method is the easiest way to regulate your breathing, mind and body.
 
       Gassho means '2 hands coming together', similar to the prayer position of your hands in front of your chest, so your out breath touches the tips of your fingers.
 
To perform Gassho do all these steps slowly:
 
1. Sit on the floor or on a chair comfortably.
 2. Close your eyes and put your hands in front of your chest, so your out breath touches the tips of your fingers.
 3. Focus your whole attention at the point where the two middle fingers meet and forget the rest. Should any thoughts come your way, acknowledge them but let them go i.e. try not to analyse your thoughts or give them any energy by questioning or wondering why the thoughts are there. Return your focus at the point where the two middle fingers meet and with time and regular practice, your mind will learn to be quiet.
 4. The reiki principles are said as affirmations at this point:
For today only;
anger not,
worry not.
Be Humble.
With gratitude work on yourself.
Be kind to all.

The Original Principles Formulated by Usui Sensei:

Dr. Mikao Usui the founder of Reiki Ryoho, adopted five admonitions to live by from the Meiji Emperor, that if applied with Reiki, would heal the body, bring peace of mind, and happiness in life. Following are those admonitions, taught as the Reiki Principles, Precepts or Ideals. It is interesting to see the variations from the various Reiki Organizations, even in the translated version.
 
From Usui Sensei's memorial: ...when it comes to teaching, first let the student understand well the Meiji Emperor's admonitory, then in the morning and in the evening let them chant and have in mind the five admonitions which are:
 
• Don't get angry today.
• Don't be grievous.
• Express your thanks.
• Be diligent in your business.
• Be kind to others.

The Ideals
• Just for today, thou shall not anger.
• Just for today, thou shall not worry.
• Thou shall be grateful for the many blessings.
• Earn thy livelihood with honest labor.

• Honor your parents, teachers and elders.
