This is my first post here and I want to tell you about a problem in Russia. It’s about Baikal lake. Our government had decided to restart polluting this nature’s miracle. And all we have to prevent this!
In the 1960s there was constructed The Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill. But when the construction was finished our country didn’t need it anymore because a lot of other synthetic materials were invented. Since that moment there were adopted many resolutions but only in the September of 2008 something really changed: a closed water cycle was adopted on the plant, and throwing the toxic effluents into the lake stopped.
However the plant cant produce a profit in such conditions, so it’s owner – the Continental Management company – exclaimed the plant will be closed. But if it happens a lot of people will become unemployed because the city Baikalsk fully depends on it. SotheGovernmentisgoingtostartpollutingthelakeagain.
Greenpeace in Russia tries to prevent it. They organize meetings of activists, compose petitions and collect signatures. But it doesn’t have a big effect. We need YOUR help – the voices of people from different countries in the world.
