Just wanted to quickly let you know about some awesome programs that we at Nourish America (www.nourishamerica.org) have been implementing throughout the year. We're in desperate need of funding to keep them going at all our locations across the country, so please consider making a holiday donation!

Nutritious foods, supplements and consistent exercise are effective tools to strengthen children and support their development into happy productive adults.

In 2009, Nourish America’s Strengthen Our Next Generation national initiative has included these programs:

Healthy Moms and Babies Providing low income pregnant women the prenatal multi-vitamins they need to assure a healthy pregnancy and healthy babies at birth. Children First Nourishing foods and supplements to help low income children thrive both at school and in life. Teen Support Supplying teens with nutrition to support healthy growth, emotional balance and success. Jump Start PE Awarding micro-grants to schools to help ensure quality, daily physical education programs in our schools.

Check out this article!

Study shows that pre-schoolers' diets mimics unhealthy adult eating: http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Science-Nutrition/Preschoolers-diets-mimic-unhealthy-adult-eating.

(P.S. Most of us could surely have suggested this to Nestle BEFORE they conducted the study!).

The U.S. Census Bureau has just announced that the poverty rate for 2008 was 13.2%.  This means the number of people in poverty has increased by about 2.5 million, to 39.8 million.  To give you some perspective, 2.5 million is more than the number of people who live in Detroit and San Francisco combined.

To highlight the importance of this data and raise awareness of poverty in the United States, we are coordinating a campaign on Twitter.com to get as many people and organizations as possible to “tweet” about the new national poverty numbers.

Looking for additional resources on poverty and data? Click here or scroll further down.

Want to help us spread the word on Twitter about the release of the poverty data?  Send a tweet that includes the #PDD09 hashtag – it’s that easy!  Make sure you include the #PDD hashtag so your tweet will be displayed in the TweetGrid below.  If it is one of our favorites, we’ll add it to this page permanently.   Can’t think of something to tweet?  Copy and paste any of the sample tweets below:

  • 2008 poverty data data has just been released!  Learn more at http://su.pr/2je5FS #PDD09
  • Want to participate in our campaign to raise awareness about poverty today? Use the #PDD09 hashtag: http://su.pr/2je5FS (Pls RT)

For such a rich country, we still have a lot of issues when it comes to something as basic as food.  Over 13 million kids are at-risk of hunger on a daily basis in our country.

The child in the above picture joined Nourish America's vitamin supplement program because she wasn't getting the nutrition she needed from her daily diet.

We all know how essential nutrition is for children. Let's help them get it!

World Vision published this announcement today. Check it out!

World Vision recently benefited from generous donations from Nourish America. These donations have helped World Vision serve the New York City community, equipping organizations with helpful vitamins and snacks that make a difference in the lives of those they serve.

World Vision’s U.S. Programs in New York works with over 150 non profit organizations equipping them to serve families and children facing the challenging aspects of extreme poverty in the South Bronx, NY, the poorest congressional district in the U.S. One recent donation came to World Vision through Nourish America and included Vitamin Water, Centrum Vitamins and nutritional snacks. Partnering with River Fund (a local World Vision partner agency that graciously introduced WV to Nourish America) communities in the South Bronx were able to benefit from these generous donations. Subsequently, Nourish America has facilitated donations to World Vision’s Storehouses nationally serving families in need in Los Angeles, Georgia, Seattle, Dallas, and Chicago.

VIP Community Services is one local organization that received Centrum vitamins. This rehabilitation facility serves one hundred men in a pivotal point in their lives who come to VIP to receive treatment. Hector Bermundez is a client at VIP Community Services and received the vitamins in early May. “When I first came into the program, I was not a healthy individual. Once I started taking the vitamins, my energy level, skin tone and appetite changed rapidly. I wish I had a before and after photo to show the change in me.”

World Vision looks forward to a continued partnership with Nourish America in serving the nation’s neediest communities. THANK YOU, NOURISH AMERICA!

This article (http://www.examiner.com/x-13142-Obesity-Examiner~y2009m6d20-School-foods-blamed-for-obesity--your-chance-to-vote-now) clearly holds the opinion that schools are at least partially to blame for the obesity epidemic we're facing in America.  I want to know your thoughts!

It means so much that each of you cares about ending child malnutrition in the U.S. and has joined Nourish America's group!
I hope we can have plenty of interesting discussions about all the different factors that play into this problem and its potential solutions.  As of now, Nourish America has proven itself as a key ingredient in the fight against malnutrition, distributing vitamins and nutritious supplements to those in need.  We've had great results - check out the website at www.nourishamerica.org for more info!
But there's plenty more to learn and do.  What causes malnourishment in the first place?  Why are certain ethnic groups more likely to be suffer from this problem than others?  And what can we do to help?
Thanks for joining us in this struggle.  I look forward to talking with each of you!
Best,
Charlotte

The power to end poverty, lays in our hands. But not within our life time. If we build a trust fund. That will grow as the years pass. We will move closer and closer to an end of poverty. Just we were to save $1 per week. say 10,000,000 people were in...
