Lisa Spector (Through A Dog's Ear) has generously decided to donate a couple CDs to Joplin Humane Society (Animal Adoption & Resource Center; ) However JHS/AA&R does not currently have the means to play the CDs if received.

If anyone can donate a player (something with speakers,) please contact me and I'll put you in touch with their contact.  (Doing it this way so that they don't recieve 100 CD players ;- p )

Best regards,

Michigan House Bill 4263, the Humane Euthanasia of Shelter Animals Act

Ban the Gas Chamber for Animals in Michigan!
Target: Michigan House
Sponsored by: American Humane Association

Michigan House Bill 4263, the Humane Euthanasia of Shelter Animals Act, would ensure that when the state's unwanted, sick or unadoptable shelter animals have to be euthanized, the procedure will only be done by injection of sodium pentobarbital. This method is called euthanasia by injection.

The American Humane Association considers euthanasia by injection to be the only acceptable and humane means of euthanasia for animals in animal shelters.

Even though a majority of the shelters in the state use euthanasia by injection, 12 still use outdated, inhumane gas chambers. Shelter workers overwhelmingly wish to hold and comfort a frightened animal in its final moments of life. That act may be the only kindness the animal has ever known.

In contrast, even with vigilant oversight, euthanizing any animal by means of a carbon monoxide or dioxide gas chamber is both severely inhumane to medium and large animals, and demoralizing to the workers who have to euthanize. Such outdated practices also create public outcry and demean the purpose of an animal shelter.

HB 4263 is sponsored by Rep. Rick Jones and was drafted by American Humane and the State Bar of Michigan Animal Law Section. Please sign today to support this bill.

In the email I received it stated that before the petition is submitted, that out of state signatures will be weeded out. If you're not a Michigan resident may I suggest writing a letter or email of *support* to Rep. Rick Jones:
Rep. Rick Jones
Lansing Office Mailing Address:
N 1090 House Office Building
P.O. Box 30014
Lansing, MI 48909-7514

There is a separate paper form for organizations and businesses who want to publicly show their support. I can send you the file through email if you are interested.
You may be able to get it sent to you through regular mail from American Humane or Rep. Rick Jones (I'm not certain though.)

"Two separate law firms are gathering information for potential class action lawsuits against Canidae and Nutro, the pet food manufacturers whose products are alleged to have caused widespread pet illness."

"Affected dogs have experienced rectal bleeding, loose and bloody stools, lethargy, and death, according to consumer complaints posted on internet forums and websites."

I have witnessed some of these side affects first hand from the Canidae. I wrote to the legal team with my story. Not sure what good it will do since it was before the recipie change.

Get those stories in if your pet has been affected. If you know someone's pet has been affected PLEASE encourage them to contact one of the law firms with their story!
