Goddess of Yangtze' driven to extinction
Scientists say loss of Baiji dolphins `tremendously sad'

BEIJING—A rare, nearly blind white dolphin that survived for millions of years is effectively extinct, an international expedition declared yesterday after a fruitless six-week search of its Yangtze River habitat.

The baiji would be the first large aquatic mammal driven to extinction since hunting and overfishing killed off the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950s.

For the baiji, the culprit was a degraded habitat — busy ship traffic, which confounds the sonar dolphins use to find food, and overfishing and pollution in the Yangtze waters of eastern China, the expedition said.

"The baiji is functionally extinct. We might have missed one or two animals but it won't survive in the wild," said August Pfluger, a Swiss economist turned naturalist who helped put together the expedition. "We are all incredibly sad."

Around 400 baiji were believed to be living in the Yangtze in the early 1980s, when China was just launching the free-market reforms that have transformed its economy. The last full-fledged search, in 1997, yielded 13 confirmed sightings, and a fisherman claimed to have seen a baiji in 2004.

The white dolphin, called the "goddess of the Yangtze" in China, dates back 20 million years.

"It's a tremendously sad day when any species goes extinct. It becomes more of a public tragedy to lose a large, charismatic species like the river dolphin," said Chris Williams, a conservation manager for the World Wildlife Fund in Washington.

Added Randall Reeves, who took part in the Yangtze mission for the Swiss-based World Conservation Union's Cetacean Specialist Group: "Some of us didn't want to believe that this would really happen, especially so quickly. This is the end of a whole branch of evolution

Please cross-post and send to your friends.  If you host a group, add group to the share.  The important thing is that we get this message out to as many Bikers on Care 2 as we can.  I've gotten some good feedback on this, so I know it will work.  Aquine.

Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Black Elk and other widely known leaders sought visions here, and the trees are still covered with bright prayer cloths and other offerings of modern-day seekers. The Sioux call it an emergence site, where their prophet Sweet Medicine brought forth the cultural traditions of their people. Tribal traditionalists say many people are finding their way back to the old ways, which is healing the drug and alcohol addictions that have plagued tribes.

I just realized
that while children are dogs
- loyal and affectionate -
teenagers are cats.

It's so easy
to be a dog owner.
You feed it, train it,
boss it around.
It puts it's head on your knee
and gazes at you
as if you were a Rembrandt painting.
It bounds indoors
with enthusiasm when you call it.

Then around age 13,
your adoring little puppy
turns into a big old cat.
When you tell it to come inside,
it looks amazed,
as if wondering who died
and made you emperor.
Instead of dogging your doorsteps,
it disappears.
You won't see it again
until it gets hungry
-- then it pauses
on its sprint through the kitchen
long enough to turn its nose up
at whatever you're serving.

When you reach out
to ruffle its head,
in that old affectionate gesture,
it twists away from you,
then gives you a blank stare,
as if trying to remember where
it has seen you before.

You, not realizing that
the dog is now a cat,
think something must be
desperately wrong with it.
It seems so antisocial,
so distant, sort of depressed.

It won't go on family outings.
Since you're the one who raised it,
taught it to fetch
and stay and sit on command,
you assume
that you did something wrong.
Flooded with guilt and fear,
you redouble your efforts
to make your pet behave.
Only now you're dealing with a cat,
so everything that worked
before now produces
the opposite of the desired result.

Call it,
and it runs away.
Tell it to sit,
and it jumps on the counter.
The more you go toward it,
wringing your hands,
the more it moves away.

Instead of continuing to act
like a dog owner,
you can learn to behave
like a cat owner.
Put a dish of food
near the door,
and let it come to you.
But remember
that a cat needs your help
and your affection too.
Sit still,
and it will come,
seeking that warm, comforting lap
it has not entirely forgotten.

Be there to open the door for it.
One day your grown-up child
will walk into the kitchen,
give you a big kiss and say,
"You've been on your feet all day.
Let me get those dishes for you."
Then you'll realize your cat
is a dog again.

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of
money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing
that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a girl."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog " just smile, because they "just don't get it."

From the Polaris Siberian Husky Rescue Page:

NalaSimba.jpg Meet Simba and Nala, my next-door neighbor's dogs. They are in need of a new home. I'm going to be sorry to see them go because they are sweet, intelligent, and very fun, but they are in a poor living situation. The folks next door neglect them pretty seriously. They are outdoors 24/7 with very sketchy shelter, including during that week in December where the temperatures were below zero for days on end. Finally the owner told me they are too "destructive" (they dig to escape their water-less yard) and he wants to get rid of them. He's fine with me finding homes for them. So here I am.

They must go together because they are bonded like nothing I've ever seen. The little girl is the one with the darker face, and she's extremely friendly. The boy is larger and much more cautious, but now that I've got his trust he's very sweet with me as well. I'm wondering if any of you have, or know anyone who has, a nice large place that they could roam on, like up in the mountains or in a big yard. Once again, they are very intelligent, and would be excellent work dogs. I have no idea what they are; although I'm thinking that Husky is part of their makeup. They are about 8 months old now, according to the owner, and look like they'll top out around 40 pounds.

Thanks for taking the time to read about these lovely dogs! If you would like to help me find their forever home please call me direct and I can set up a time to meet.
