Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha , Wisconsin will be closing on December 31st, 2009 and 900 Greyhounds need to be adopted or they will be euthanized.

Now is the perfect time to consider adopting one of the wonderful dogs! They make great companions and are good with other animals and children.  This evil "sport" is coming to an end and we need to step up and help the remaining victims before they lose their lives.

Many of you are already aware that there are groups associated with animal research who pose as Rescue and/or Transport Groups periodically with the full intent of stealing the animals in transport and delivering and/or selling them for animal research.

The complete listing has been included in a new file in the FILE section of our index. Please copy and paste for your convenience and refer often to the names listed.

I'm sure there are other groups or names associated with animal research that we are not aware of - but this will at least aid us in keeping safe. As you come across additional names that should be added to this list - send them to me and they will be added to the filed list.

3 Mexican Dogs Facing Horrible Fate If We Don't Help! May 20 Deadline!

HELP - ANIMAL COMMUNITY - PLEASE CROSS POST - TIME SENSITIVE:

Ed and I are in our mid 70's and have come to the end of our rescue days, the mental anguish is just too lasting for us now,
especially in Mexico, you just can't seem to shake it off - it was hard enough when we were young twenty years ago.  
Proudly, our 3 grown children are all avid rescuers.
 
We purchased a home in Maricopa, AZ and it closes May 20 and we must also be out of our house in Mexico.  
 
We have 3 dogs and 6 cats left from different rescues.  The cats we will take with us since we cannot place them.
If left, they would be killed by the night running dogs.
 
We cannot however take any of the 3 dogs we were fostering and need too place them asap.  If left here, their certain fate
is poison, being shot or starvation.  
We have a large dog pen we could possibly bring and we could donate $50 to $100 a month for their care.
 
MaMa Dog loves nice people.  She is spayed and is without hardly any ears, and maybe part Sharpei. (top of picture)
 
 
The black and white dog is very young female, not spayed yet.  She plays a lot and hasn't yet realized many of the "hard knocks" of
living in Mexico.
 
Chatter "talks" he also "howls". (shepherd at bottom right of picture) He ran away from a very brutal human who tried to take him back but we didn't let him.  
We know if we leave him, this man will get him and beat him until he can't walk and starve him.  It would be best to have him
euthanized, but vet's here in Mexico do not do that, although we can ask a Policeman to shoot him for us and he will for a price!  
 
Please help us save their lives!  We truly need any help we can get, we only have 12 days left.

I need your help.

We are all on here because we want to effect positive change in the world – on local, national and global scales.  We stand up for human rights, civil rights, humane treatment of animals, protection of the innocent and helpless, good stewardship of the Earth, political freedom, justice and responsibility in our actions.

And, as all of you know, we are often at odds with our governments who seem to disregard the will of the people so they can meet their own agendas.  This is particularly true here in the United States.  The actions of the U.S. government the past seven years have had a profound impact on our citizens and the world at large.  Whether for good or bad, this country leads a good portion of the rest of the world, even if for no other reason than economic impact.  We’ve embroiled other nations in our war of choice and our industries play a major role in environmental pollution and degradation.

This year, we have a chance to change much of what has been going on in this country.  The American people are ready for a sea-change in direction.  For that, we MUST have a large, Progressive majority in both the House and Senate regardless of who is in the White House.  Congress cannot pass good laws for the President to sign if it is evenly divided or under right-wing control. 

What has that got to do with all of you??  Well, a LOT!!  Even if you are not a U.S. citizen, our election will impact your life somehow.  To that end, I’m hoping you will see fit to send this note on to EVERYONE you know.  I’m also hoping you’ll help me out.  Why?  Well, I’m running for Congress in Arizona’s Congressional District #6 against an incumbent Republican who went unchallenged for 2 terms and I NEED YOUR HELP.  He’s well financed and his family is wealthy as well.

You all may not know, but I’m a librarian making a living, but I’m not personally at ALL wealthy, nor do I have big contacts who are.  However, we’ve all seen the tremendous power of grassroots efforts by large numbers of individuals.  Individuals like YOU.  I’m asking that you put that power behind me in my bid for election.  I’m NOT a politician.  I AM ONE OF YOU.  

But, unfortunately, candidates for Congress cannot utilize Clean Elections, so I need money to campaign.  Jeff Flake, the current Representative has consistently voted against everything we on Care2 stand for.  His lock-step marching with Bush and Big Business has harmed our town, our state, our nation and the world.

I’m asking a simple thing: go to my webpage http://www.schneider2008.com.  Read about me and my stances and then make a small donation of $10, $25 or even $50.  I think you’ll like what you see…and you all know my stands on the environment, animals, civil and human rights, etc.  As many of you know as well, I’m no sniveling coward and I won’t back down to bullying when I know something is patently wrong.

Read the Bill Act

In our system of government, Senators have longer terms than Representatives. In theory, this gives them freedom to be more far-sighted and more statesmanlike than Representatives, who are constantly seeking re-election. Sometimes, democratic passions cause the House to pass popular but seriously flawed bills, and the framers of the Constitution created the Senate so that cooler heads would prevail. It seemed to work: for generations the Senate was considered the "world's greatest deliberative body."

But today, the Senate passes most bills unread and without any deliberation. In fact, bills are often rushed through without Senators even knowing about them. Their "consent" to a bill is assumed, and this leads  to bills being passed by "unanimous consent." It is a process called "hotlining." Paul Jacob has a good column on it this week.

A Senator's office is notified by phone of a bill that both the majority leader and minority leader would like to see passed without debate. The Senator's staff is given a deadline to place a "hold" on the bill. A hold can be placed for any number of reasons - the Senator may want to obstruct passage of the bill, as Sen. Stevens famously tried to obstruct the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act last year. Or, a Senator may place a hold if he or she wants to introduce an amendment. Or maybe the Senator just wants time to read and consider the bill. But there are many occasions when Senators aren't even given a fair chance to place a hold. As Sen. Sessions of Alabama tells it:

"In each Senate office there are three telephones with hotline buttons on them. Most evenings, sometimes after business hours, these phones begin to ring. The calls are from the Republican and the Democratic leaders to each of their Members, asking consent to pass this or that bill--not consider the bill or have debate on the bill but to pass it. Those calls will normally give a deadline. If the staff do not call back in 30 minutes, the bill passes. Boom. It can be 500 pages. In many offices, when staffers do not know anything about the bill, they usually ignore the hotline and let the bill pass without even informing their Senators. If the staff miss the hotline, or do not know about it or were not around, the Senator is deemed to have consented to the passage of some bill which might be quite an important piece of information." Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma elaborates:
"During the 109th Congress (2005-2006), 341 bills and joint resolutions were passed by the Senate. According to the Congressional Research Service, only 21 of those bills received a roll call vote on the Senate floor. That means 94 percent of law making measures that were passed through the Senate were passed by UC or by voice vote. A large majority of these were hotlined and therefore excluded from full and open debate and the amendment process. In the 109th Congress, 1,408 bills, resolutions, or nominations were attempted to be hotlined, with as many as 40 measures being hotlined in a single day." Source: Coburn's website

No wonder government grows so quickly. A Senator may have a headache and call it a night, and when he returns to his office the next day he finds out he "consented" to several bills he knew nothing about. Calling the Senate a "rubber stamp" is an insult to rubber stamps.

And it is we the people who suffer. We are the ones who must pay for the government's wasteful programs and obey its unnecessary laws. The least we should expect is that our representatatives in Congress read and understand the bills they pass. The least we should expect is that all bills actually come to a floor vote, and are not "passed" via telephone messages. That is why we must pressure Congress to pass the Read the Bills Act.

Tell Congress you are disgusted by procedures such as the Senate's hotlining process. Tell them that they should read and understand every bill they want passed, and that bills should actually be voted on in both chambers. Tell them to pass the Read the Bills Act.

Also, please help spread the word about the Read the Bills Act. One way to do this is through the Read the Bills Act Coalition. By adding your blog or website to the Coalition, you will direct your readers to the RTBA. In return, your site will be linked to on our blog. Go here for details.

Finally, last week the Senate passed 8 bills amounting to 462 pages of legislation. The House passed 17 bills and 295 pages. Almost all of them are worthy of comment, but we just don't have the time. The list of bills can be found at the bottom of the blog version of this Dispatch.

Let's Give Our National Parks a Spring Cleaning!

I just took action to protect our national parks, and I hope you'll join me.


Pollution from power plants is spoiling views in some of our greatest national parks. Can you believe that these beloved national park sites are among hundreds in EPA-designated "poor air quality" areas?

  * The Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial

Chimp Brothers Still Need Help to Be Reunited

C'mon, friends and Care2 members, help out these poor boys by signing the petition.  These two chimp brothers, Hunter and Lyon, were together for 21 years in an animal testing lab until some braniac thought they should be sent to separate facilities.    Now, they exist away from each other, lonely and afraid, because they don't have each other for support.    Let's get them reunited and sent to a sanctuary to live out their lives in peace!!

We Are Still Fighting Covance, the Animal Testing Lab!

We are still fighting to keep Covance, a cruel animal testing lab, from coming to Chandler, Arizona.  They intend to build a HUGE facility and will brutally torture and slaughter up to 250,000 animals per year or more.  We really want to stop this, but we need your help!
