What would you say if I told you that we could live in a perfect world today? Welcome to the remarkable community and homes for sale in Columbia MD. It seems utopian, but there are numerous places across the globe which are founded on the idea of being a community that truly enhances the quality of life for all residents. Founded directly on that very idea, Columbia was developed with and for the most genuine of excellence. Specifically a planned new community, there are many ways that the city has upheld its commitment to greatness over the years, from start to present. As a planned community, of course, the most prominent goal of all was to construct a system of development that provided for optimal housing, commuting, and urban planning. With successful execution, the city has come to be well-known for its beautiful homes for sale in Columbia MD.

In fact, buying one of the homes for sale in Columbia MD will place you as a resident in one of the most highly regarded communities in the US. In 2010, Columbia and neighboring city, Ellicott City, were ranked together by Money magazine as number 2 on their list of 100 “Best Places to Live”. To fully understand just how awesome the city is, we must back things back up a few steps and take a look at the roots of this unique community.

The city’s history dates back to the 1960s, when The Rouse Company—founded by James Rouse, grandfather of actor Edward Norton—had purchased a staggering 10 percent of Howard County, Maryland. As the state is small in size, that amounted to just over 14,000 acres of undeveloped land. Fittingly, this community between Baltimore and Washington that Rouse purchased, was done so with plans of demolishing leap-frog development, and instead, for developing a planned new city that would breathe new life into the state unlike any other. The vision didn’t come to life solely by the work of Rouse, but it was through the effort of a full panel of experts in urban planning, as well as a unique panel of experts in social sciences—the Work Group.

The Work Group indeed did do extraordinary work for the city, coming together to divulge the blueprint for innovation for the planners in many sects and community divisions, including education, recreation, religion, and health care. Every idea planned for the city was uniquely great, and as a whole, fulfilled a seamless representation of perfect community.

The best example, though, is the amazing physical plan of the city’s neighborhoods and village centers. The Work Group envisioned a plan that involved ten distinct villages, which each contained their own distinct neighborhoods. The idea behind this concept was to create a small-town feel in each village throughout the community. On a smaller scale, neighborhoods would contain homes for sale in Columbia MD, as well as townhomes, apartments, and the like. On the larger scale, Columbia has four different worship centers where people of a variety of faiths come together, among many, many other facets to that make homes for sale in Columbia MD some of the most desirable.
