Season For Non-violence : changing the world one person at a time

Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,the Season For Non-violence will take place around the world from January 30th to April 4th.
It's a 64-day worldwide educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities.

Throughout the 64-day campaign, events and activities for peace and nonviolence take place all around the world, highlighting existing peace building initiatives and inspiring new year-round activities for a more peaceful, nonviolent just and sustainable world.

The first Season for Nonviolence, inaugurated in 1998 to honor the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., inspired a grassroots campaign of unified activism. The inaugural event was held at the United Nations and brought forth substantive endorsements and commitments from the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, the U.S. Ambassador to India, the Director General of UNESCO on behalf of its Culture of Peace and nonviolence appeal by the Nobel Peace Laureates. Since then, four hundred major peace organizations, religious, business, arts and learning institutions became official co-sponsors of the Season which drew massive media coverage, proclamations by half of all U.S. Governors, more than 300 ongoing programs in nonviolence in communities across the USA and many other reactions throughout the world. Season co-founders are Arun and Sunanda Gandhi of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence.

The Season for Nonviolence honors Gandhi's and King's vision of a nonviolent world. Conceived by Gandhi's grandson Arun and his wife Sunanda, the worldwide, grassroots movement intends to demonstrate that every person can move the world in the direction of peace through daily choice and action based on compassion, respect and understanding.

"Our objective is to create an awareness of nonviolent principles and practice as a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives and communities. Through an educational and community action campaign, we honor those who are using nonviolence to build a community that honors the dignity and worth of every human being. By identifying what works in these new models for reconciliation and human harmony, we demonstrate that every person can move the world in the direction of peace through their daily nonviolent choice and action."

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.
Mahatma Gandhi

You must be the change you want to see in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
Mahatma Gandhi

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
Mahatma Gandhi, (attributed)

Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars... Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
Martin Luther King Jr.

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.
Martin Luther King Jr.

The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.
Martin Luther King Jr.

Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.
Martin Luther King Jr.

We don't have to love nor like each other, but we share the same planet.Let's do it peacefully.

Reclaiming the season
from adbusters.org

"Inspired by the international successes of Buy Nothing Day, and disgusted with the personal debt, spiritual emptiness, and ecological damage that the holiday season now entails, writers and activists began to heavily promote the idea of a downshifted Christmas in the late nineties. Since then, the idea has been taken up by individuals, community groups, churches, and schools in at least a dozen countries, with strongest support in Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Despite the name, the Buy Nothing Christmas campaign is not really about refusing to spend a dime over the holiday season. It’s about taking a deep breath and deciding to opt out of the hype, the overcrowded malls, and the stressful to-do lists. It’s about reminding ourselves to really think about what we are buying, why we are buying it, and whether we really need it at all.

“First and foremost, it’s about restoring authenticity to one the world’s great religious and secular traditions,” said Kalle Lasn, editor-in-chief of Adbusters magazine and long-time advocate of holiday restraint. “Christmas has been warped beyond recognition by commercial forces. It’s about time we took it back.”

Most participants will still exchange gifts, but will opt for recycled, homemade, locally produced, or fair-trade items. Some will excuse themselves from gift-giving altogether, and focus instead on valuable time with family and friends, on charitable works, and on rediscovering older, non-commercial holiday traditions as they also invent a few new ones. "

This may seem a bit radical and I know we all love to give and receive lots of gifts during the holidays.I know I do,nearly as much as I enjoy seeing all the holiday decorations and christmas lights.
But I think they're right.

I seriously can't understand why more and more people start celebrating the festivities earlier every year and I'm amazed to see Christmas adds in November while watching TV.It's annoying! >.< icon_stressed.gif
Apart from personal reasons,I feel the commercial pressure put into the holidays stresses me out more and more every year, preventing me from enjoying them as I used to.

Millions of trees are cut down for decorative purpouses, sold for about ten days' use before being unceremoniously tossed out onto the pavement. You can sing "O Christmas Tree" until you go hoarse, but that tree you just bought is dying before your eyes.A waste.

Lots of energy and money wasted by lots and lots of Christmas lights. The waste of electricity for amusement and nostalgia can't be justified only by the fact that it is beautiful.
I never liked houses all lit up(and it's not traditional in my country),but I love how the towns look at this time of the year. However,it's irresponsible.
I saw this on a discusion about the matter while browsing the Internet and I loved it! :

I take great pleasure in being the only house in my street that ISN’T lit up with ridiculous xmas lights. In fact, refusing to bow down to peer pressure and emotional blackmail, I have gone so far as to unscrew the streetlight directly out the front of my place to ensure it is extra dark in comparison to the rest of the street.

In place of energy wasting lights, I have installed a notice on my front gate stating “The money saved by not buying and running xmas lights this year has now restord the eyesight to 10 African children by way of a donation to the Fred Hollows foundation. Maybe you could suggest this to the rest of my neighbours as you wander down the street staring google-eyed at all the other lights”.
XD

Anyway,end of rant LOL

However you celebrated,or even if you didn't,I hope you all enjoyed the holidays.
May the coming year bring you joy and happiness! ^_^

The state of our planet is a little spooky right now. Human activity and modern conveniences are taking a significant toll on the plants, animals, and natural resources we rely on. Climate change, species extinction, and other urgent environmental issues threaten all life on Earth, including us.

The scariest part of it all? We could witness waves of extinctions in as few as 50 years, and there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to prevent them.

Except …

If each of us -- billions of individuals worldwide -- made modest changes in our everyday lives, we could protect the planet and its resources for ourselves and for future generations.

Here’s some of the things you can do :

1.Be an Eco-warrior for Halloween this year.
Visit www.conservation.org/ecofootprint to measure the size of your ecological footprint. It’s quick, easy, and educational. At the end, you’ll discover whether you’re and Eco-novice, -apprentice, -ally, or -warrior and get tips on how to be as light-footed as you can be.
(About this quiz: 11 questions total,5 minutes long, receive score at the end, learn to improve your impact on biodiversity,e-mail your results to friends)

2.Take the Halloween Eco-pledge.
Whether it’s being extra creative with your costume, changing your front porch light, using a canvas bag to capture your treats, or tricking others into carpooling that night, one small change can make all the difference. Take the Halloween Eco-Pledge now!

3.Don't Let your Treats be a Trick to Children in Africa!

What's scarier than ghosts or goblins this Halloween? How about chocolate treats made from child labor?

Almost half of the world's cocoa is produced on West African plantations where widespread instances of child slavery, human trafficking, and forced labor have been reported.

Unless multi-billion dollar candy companies like Nestle and Mars take the lead, most of the chocolate in your local supermarket will continue to be made at the cost of human life.

This Halloween, call on Nestle and Mars to protect African children by using fair trade chocolate in their candy.

Find out where you can buy fair trade chocolate:

100% Fair Trade Companies

4.Save the Bats

Several companies are catching bats in the wild and killing them for sale as "art" in glass frames. These bats are showing up for sale on eBay. One small bat, the Short-nosed fruit bat, is a major target of this cruel practice. The fruit bat is an important pollinator and seed dispenser, and is classified as vulnerable.

Unless eBay can verify that bats sold on the eBay website are not imperiled in the wild, and have been collected after they have died naturally, eBay should protect bats by prohibiting the sale of their bodies.

Take action now by signing this petition.

5.Spread the word

Each of your small actions can spark a chain of other actions. Tell just two of your friends or family members to take any of these measures along with you, and you’ve multiplied your impact. It’s that easy.

October 16 ~ End Hunger Day

There is more than enough food in the world so that no one need ever go hungry. Those who wish for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world are helping to make ending world hunger a major priority. In fact, all of the world's leaders agreed to cut the number of starving people in half by the year 2015 as the first priority of the Millennium Development Goals.

World Food Day / End Hunger Day is an opportunity for the global community to unite in an effort to help raise awareness about the global problem of hunger. World Food Day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1980 to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945 (resolution 35/70). The official goal of the day is to "heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty."

Focus: Death Penalty
Action Request: Various
Location: United States

October 10 was the fourth World Day against the Death Penalty organized by Amnesty International.

You can click here to go to their page and get more extensive information.

The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.

It violates the right to life.

It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent. It has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments.

As an organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights, Amnesty International (AI) works for an end to executions and the abolition of the death penalty everywhere.

The progress has been dramatic. When AI convened an International Conference on the Death Penalty in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1977, just 16 countries had abolished capital punishment for all crimes. Today the figure stands at 88.

Each year since 1997 the United Nations Commission on Human Rights has passed a resolution calling on countries that have not abolished the death penalty to establish a moratorium on executions. The latest resolution, adopted in April 2005, was co-sponsored by 81 UN member states, the highest number ever.

AI issues updated information and news of developments, and maintains a library of reports on the death penalty worldwide.

AI is a member of the World Coalition against the Death Penalty, a coalition that unites national and international human rights organizations, bar associations, trade unions and local and regional authorities in an effort to rid the world of the death penalty.

Colours are Brighter is a thirteen track compilation of children's songs recorded by the likes of Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, Four Tet, Kathryn Williams and The Divine Comedy. It will be released on Rough Trade Records on 16th October 2006 and all the proceeds go to Save The Children.

Colours are Brighter - Save the Children

Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, The Kooks and Four Tet are amongst the artists contributing to a collection of childrens songs curated by Belle and Sebastian, to raise funds for children's charity, Save the Children. Colours are Brighter will be released on Rough Trade on October 16th, with all profits and artist royalties from the record being donated to the charity.

A while in the making, but well worth the wait, the album contains twelve tracks, the vast majority of which have been specially recorded for the project over the past two years. The full track listing hides a number of stories
1. Four Tet featuring Princess Watermelon - Go Go Ninja Dinosaur
2. Rasputina - A Skeleton Bang
3. Franz Ferdinand - Jackie Jackson
4. Snow Patrol - I Am An Astronaut
5. The Divine Comedy - Three Cheers For Pooh, Cottleston Pie, Piglet Ho
6. The Kooks - The King & I
7. Half Man Half Biscuit - David Wainwright's Feet
8. The Barcelona Pavilion - Tidy Up Tidy Up
9. Jonathan Richman - Our Dog Is Getting Older Now
10.Belle and Sebastian - The Monkeys Are Breaking Out The Zoo
11.Ivor Cutler Trio - Mud
12. The Flaming Lips - The Big Ol' Bug Is The New Baby Now
13. Kathryn Williams - Night Baking

Snow Patrols track is a cover version of a much sought after 7 recorded in 1972 by the then 11 year old Ricky Wilde, brother of Kim, son of Marti, who is also the author of the song. The Ivor Cutler track was produced by George Martin and featured on the Apple-released album, Ludo. Permission for its use on The Colours Are Brighter was given by Cutlers son, Jonathan. Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy performed a medley of three pieces from the pen of A.A.Milne for the release, whilst Jonathan Richman flouted medical advice to record his track. He had been ordered to give his voice full rest after a problem with his vocal chords had been diagnosed, but ventured on for the cause.

Alex Kapranos, Franz Ferdinand, on the band's involvement:-
"We were very happy to record for Colours are Brighter album since, like most people in bands, we tend to think like children anyway. When I was a kid I hated songs that were too nice. I didn't care about whether the wheels on the bus went round or if we were going to the zoo tomorrow. Me and my brother used to make up revolting words for pop songs instead. I used to love stories that were gory, particularly Roald Dahl, Shock Headed Peter and Grimm Fairy Tales. Jackie Jackson is from that world - he's a horrible boy who meets a horrible end. It's also an amazing honour to be on the same album as Ivor Cutler, Jonathan Richman and Half Man Half Biscuit - all musical icons. I had a safe and happy childhood, but not everyone is that lucky. Save the Children is a charity that quietly works hard at making life better for children around the world who suffer because of the situation around them."

Kieran Hebden, AKA Four Tet, on Go Go Ninja Dinosaur:-
"My basic idea for the track was to get straight to the point and really do something that I thought little kids would like, rather then just take a childrens song and produce it in my normal adult style. I came up with the idea for Ninja Dinosaur from thinking about ideas in cartoons and stuff that I was into when I was a kid... Bananaman, Super Gran, Mysterious Cities Of Gold, Dogtanion...all pretty mental concepts really. I would be heavily into the theme tunes from these things, and would usually be perfectly happy if the song was just the name of the character repeated again and again over some cheap casio keyboard sounds. So with all this in my head I made Go Go Ninja Dinosaur."

Gary Lightbody, Snow Patrol, on I Am An Astronaut:-
"We wanted to make our version of the song sound as if it was made in space primarily. There are two ways to do this. You can make it in spacealthough this is tricky as it involves actually becoming an astronaut. The training alone takes years and I've heard you need to be very good at mathematics for some reason, and I'm not very good at maths at all. This only leaves one other optionthat we give the song a spacey feel. So we sprinkled some space dust (that we bought at a special market) on top of the song, and now it sounds like it was made far above the earth. Really it was made in a studio in Ireland, but if you don't tell anyone I won't either."
Hmmm now theres a man with an overactive imagination.

The Monkeys Are Breaking Out The Zoo is the first Belle and Sebastian track ever to have featured Mick Cooke (bassist/trumpet player, and the Belles band member primarily responsible for envisaging/bringing together this fantastic release) on lead vocals. He describes it as his "own Ringo-esque contribution to the band". Monkey noises are courtesy of bandmates, Chris Geddes and Richard Colburn. The Belles track in fact provided the impetus for the album to come together, as Cooke explains:
"I woke up one morning with a song in my head about monkeys breaking out of the zoo. We recorded the song at our own studio in Glasgow, which turned out to be a lot of fun, as I found myself chucking bricks into Glasgows river Kelvin, minidisc recorder in hand, and screaming like a monkey with Chris and Richard. Having recorded the song, the band began to decide what on earth to do with it. Someone suggested compiling an album of songs for children by lots of different bands, with the proceeds going to charity. So that's what we did."

On completion of that particular track, other artists were approached with a view to contributing. Most were intrigued by the challenge of writing a song for children that would not irritate their existing, adult fans (and parents).

"It wasn't too difficult in the end," says Cooke. "It basically involved speaking to friends, bands we had toured with and people, like Kieran Hebden, Half Man Half Biscuit and The Kooks, that we thought would get the idea and come up with something unique and original."

"Save the Children were an instant and obvious choice of beneficiary, as they are, perhaps, the best childrens charity," explains Cooke. "The work they do is global, concentrating on helping children in developing countries, and in areas which have been torn apart by war. Their workers put their lives at risk every day to save lives and educate."

Save the Children fights for children in both the UK and around the world who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence, working with them to find lifelong answers to the problems they face. Funds raised from the sale of Colours Are Brighter will go straight to Re-write the Future, a global Save the Children campaign aimed at providing eight million children living in conflict-affected countries with education, offering them protection, stability and opportunities where they would otherwise have none. Almost half a million children live in conflict affected countries where they are at risk of being displaced, forced to fight, sexually exploited or used as labour. Many see friends and relatives die and are more vulnerable to malnutrition and disease. Schools provide children with a safe place which equips them with the skills to look after themselves, and provides them with better prospects for their future.

Colours are Brighter is released by Rough Trade on 16th October.

The Face in the Mirror

The good you find in others,
is in you too.
The faults you find in others,
are your faults as well.

After all, to recognize
something you must know it.
The possibilities you see in others,
Are possible for you as well.

The beauty you see around you,
is your beauty.
The world around you is a reflection,
A mirror showing you the person you are.

To change your world,
you must change yourself.
To blame and complain
will only make matters worse.
Whatever you care about,
is your responsibility.
What you see in others,
shows you yourself.

See the best in others,
and you will be your best.
Give to others,
and you give to yourself.
Appreciate beauty,
and you will be beautiful.
Admire creativity,
and you will be creative.

Love, and you will be loved.
Seek to understand,
and you will be understood.
Listen, and your voice
will be heard.
Teach, and you will learn.

Show your best face to the mirror,
And you'll be happy with
the face looking back at you.

The House of 1000 Mirrors

(Japanese folktale)

Long ago in a small, far away village, there was place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the House, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often." In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again."

All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet?

I only knew about it a couple of days ago...though you've been gone for long.
Words fail me as I stare at your profile helplessly and I can't help it,I'm heartbroken.

I know no one's watching while tears come to my eyes and my mouth becomes suddenly dry.

I know we didn't know each other that well, only the ocasional "hello, have a nice day" or that green star every now and then, but still, you touched me.
You were one of my first friends here, one of the first people sending me green starts when I had none and the first one inviting me to groups when I was too shy to talk to anyone.
I still don't talk much, maybe that's why I didn't find that strange not receiving news from you for so long.I sometimes disconnect and disappear too..

You were a nice and caring person and I'm sure you're still making a difference, wherever you are now.

"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."

Much love.
