Hi all!!!

This is soooooo important because there is so little time left!  I posted the story in the Care2 news, it is currently listed as HOT and is in the Newly Submitted tab under US Politics and Gov't (should've been animals, but I goofed... but it is politics, too...)   So PLEASE go there and note it and then sign, we need thousands more signatures in the next two days!!!!  I am really hoping you all will note it to the front page so MORE people will see it and sign.  It is soooooo important!!

Thank you all so much!!!

BTW, the photo is of my daughter, Ashley, and one of the magnificent wolves at Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in So. California.  They have a terrific group here on Care2 as well!

Hugs and thanks!!!

Help Save Wolves... Time is running out!

Wyoming and Idaho are poised to start the biggest wolf massacre in decades. Together, we can stop them.

Take action: Speak up for our wolves! Use the form below to submit your comments to federal officials before the May 9th deadline. Tell them to keep critical protections in place for wolves in the Idaho, Wyoming and Greater Yellowstone area.

Actions taken:
135,802
Actions needed:
200,000

It is important that federal officials hear what you have to say. Fill out the below, and we'll send your comments to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Remember, your personalized comments will have greater impact in the fight to protect our wolves.

I am not very good at this, sorry it is a bit of a mess, but someone had already posted this as news, so I couldn't do it again. So, I copied what I could and the address where you can sign and make your views heard. It is so terribly important that we get the numbers up!!! We have worked for years to reinstate the wolf and if the gov. of Wyoming and Idaho have their way, they will be pretty much wiped out of both states as soon as protection is lifted.
Thanks for helping!!!
Hugs,
Roxie
P.S. I checked, if you copy and paste the address below into your browser, it will take you to the page.   Thank you everyone!  And the beautiful photo I attached is of my daughter at Wolf Mountain Sanctuary, in Californai with one of their beautiful wolves.  If you are in the area, be sure to visit.  They also have a group here on Care2, so please visit!!!

Canadian seal hunters trapped

Friday April 20, 2007
The Guardian

Canadian coastguards were last night battling to rescue hundreds of seal hunters trapped in thick ice off the country's Newfoundland east coast. Some 100 sealing vessels became stuck in drifting pack ice on Wednesday and the crews of at least four boats have already been flown to safety.

An ice-breaking coastguard ship sent to the area has also become stuck in the worst ice conditions seen in the region for 15 years, Canadian officials said.

Another five rescue boats are smashing their way through ice more than a metre thick to reach the stricken vessels. But not all of the sealers are expected to be freed before the weekend. Three coastguard helicopters are dropping food and supplies, and are on standby to evacuate more hunters if conditions worsen. About 15 vessels are in danger of ice piercing their hulls.

The Newfoundland phase of Canada's controversial seal hunt is the third and largest, in which 270,000 animals are killed for pelts and blubber.

Brian Penney, a superintendent with the coastguard in Newfoundland and Labrador, said: "There are vessels disabled, there are vessels damaged. There are crews that are out on the ice because there's quite a possibility that their vessels may sink or the vessels are out on their sides."

The coastguard is trying to get supplies to those vessels that are in the most dire straits, he said. "Supplies are starting to run very low, in addition to fuel," he added.

Many sealer crews are reluctant to abandon their vessels. In some cases boats could be crushed by the thick ice and their hulls cracked open.

Reduced ice conditions further to the south meant this year's total seal quota had been cut back from the 335,000 hunted last year. The seals use the normally widespread ice floes in the Gulf of St Lawrence and in the Atlantic Ocean to give birth to their young.

"Conditions have deteriorated over the last few days as a result of the wind pressing the ice floes into the land," a Canadian coastguard, Windross Banton, told CBC television from an icebreaker.

"There's quite a few different pockets of vessels all about the area ... unfortunately the weather conditions forecast right up until the end of this week are probably going to cause conditions to even deteriorate more so than they are now."

The hunters earn about £39 for each seal pelt - most of them destined for the fashion industry in Norway, Russia and China. But seal blubber is also sold to produce oil.

The hunt has been condemned as cruel and unnecessary by campaigners and high-profile figures including Paul McCartney. The United States has banned Canadian seal products since 1972 and the European Union banned the white pelts of baby seals in 1983.

Canada's Fisheries and Oceans Department said about two-thirds of this year's quota had already been filled.

We have a 1 to 2 year old Pit bull that someone abandoned, by tying her to a pole in the back of our hospital earlier this week. She is an intact brown female, great personality, and is in need of a good home.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

We do not want to contact animal control regarding her, since we all know how pit bulls fare there, so if you think you could help with this please let us know.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

She really is a sweetheart, and she deserves a great place to call home. I know a lot of us here would take her if we had the space, but unfortunately others just like her have moved in already (I have two pits myself), so if you guys have room, or if you know of anyone who could take her on please let us know.

Pictures of her have been attached.

You can reach me at this email address or by phone at: 803-366-1950.

Thanks for your time.

Let's have some fun! See how long it gets and where this goes. This
will be our big 2006 email to pass. Give it a go! 365 Birthdays.
Out of all of the billions of people who live in the world, there has to be
somebody
born on each date of the year. We are going to try to accomplish the task of
seeing
if we can fill the calendar up with a birthday on every day of the year.
Add your name. There can't be any last names, but do put in your city / province (or state) next to
your birth date to the list below. Then, send this list to all your friends,
plus the person who sent it to you! Let's see if we can do it!!
Remember, COPYING and PASTING this in a NEW E-mail, will keep it clean and
make it easier to read than just forwarding it. If someone has already put
their name in the slot of your birthday, please just add your name
beside it
and DO NOT DELETE THAT PERSON'S NAME!!!

These politicians who were against this need to be replaced, and this fund raiser needs to continue. Please call, write, or e-mail your thoughts...
Thank you, my friends!!!

"Hooters for Neuters" Flier Triggers Howls of Protest

June 27, 2006, 10:10 PM PDT

The head of Los Angeles Animal Services bowed out of a fund-raiser for his department today after a sexually-charged flier touting the "Hooters for Neuters" event was criticized by other city officials.

Animal Services Director Ed Boks said the department would not accept donations raised from the July 13 "Charity Benefit Bikini Contest" at a Hollywood nightclub.

"It certainly was not my intention to offend anyone," Boks said in a statement released late this afternoon. "I have reconsidered Animal Services' role as beneficiary ... and decided we will not be accepting any donations from this event."

Boks' announcement was an about-face from interview earlier in the day, when he said the event would go on as planned.

A representative of the Hooters restaurant chain, which was sponsoring the event, could not be reached for comment late this afternoon.

Although the fund-raiser was not a city-sponsored event, a promotional flier was posted on the Animal Services Web site.

Several city officials said they were offended because the original flier showed a bikini-clad woman, but a later version showed a dog wearing a T-shirt that says "Hooters for Neuters."

Funds raised were to be directed to the spay and neuter program at the city's six animal shelters.

"This is a classic example of a learning experience for someone who is new to the city of Los Angeles," said City Controller Laura Chick, the first woman elected to a citywide office in Los Angeles.

"I am pleased that we have kept our well-deserved reputation as a city that respects, honors and empowers women and opposes anything that does not," she said.

Chick said she called Boks this morning to offer some "very strong, friendly advice" about the event.

"I told him that he should take all that stuff off his Web site and immediately remove any connection of the department to the event," Chick said. "I told him that one of my priorities is to empower women, and this goes against everything I've been trying to achieve ... It's using women as sexual objects."

Boks said the owners of Hooters -- a chain known for its buxom, scantily clad waitresses -- approached him about the fund-raiser a month ago. Budweiser designed the ads without consulting the Animal Services Department, he said.

"The money from this event will save the lives of many animals," Boks said earlier today. "When somebody steps up and says they want to help your agency raise money, your inclination is to say `yes.' But we probably won't be involved in any future bikini contests."

The charity event was meant to attract men, who are less likely to spay or neuter their pets than women, according to Animal Services officials familiar with the project, who asked not to be named.

Boks, who previously oversaw animal shelter operations in New York and Maricopa County, Ariz, was hired by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa earlier this year to replaced Guerdon Stuckey, who was fired because of high euthanasia rates at city shelters.

Villaraigosa's office could not be reached for immediate comment.

Boks hopes to implement a "no-kill" policy within five years. But that means more will people need to sterilize their pets so that unwanted animals are not abandoned, he said.

The department has been criticized for lacking creativity in telling pet owners to sterilize their animals, but this method "crosses the line," Councilwoman Jan Perry said.

"I was surprised and amazed with the photograph on the flier, and I don't think it projects a good image for the city of Los Angeles," she said. "I hope that all our departments now learn to be more circumspect in the future."

City Council President Eric Garcetti said he wasn't pleased that the charity event was scheduled to be held at The Highlands in Hollywood -- which is located within his 13 District in the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex.

"We want to make sure that dogs are adopted and fixed in the city, but we also need to be respectful of all human beings," Garcetti said. "This is an event being held in this city, in my district, but I don't think it's necessarily something the city should be involved in."

I find this ridiculous, help controlling animal populations should come from any source and this in my opinion is obscene... we need to make sure this woman is not re-elected.  And try to reverse the decision if possible.  Thanks for your help, guys.

Despite popular belief, Unicorns did not evolve<br>from horse-like ancestors. Instead they are<br>descendants of cloven-hoofed mammals like pigs,<br>camels deer, and antelope. This is because<br>unicorns have cloven hooves and have true horns<br>which you will find on no horse, only<br>cloven-hoofed animals. To narrow down their<br>"relatives" even more, we can say<br>that they are more likely to be related to<br>antelope as opposed to deer because of the<br>horn. Deer antlers are bonelike structures that<br>grow out of the males (generally) forehead in<br>the spring and summer. The antlers are then<br>shed for the winter months. Now the horns found<br>in antelope, cattle and seep are never shed and<br>continue to grow throughout the animal’s<br>lifetime. Also, both sexes typically grow horns<br>where as only the buck (male deer) grows<br>antlers.

Your Ally would be a unicorn because your<br>beautiful, graceful, softhearted, and<br>mysterious. You love wildlife and your great at<br>keeping a secret. You tend to be modest and<br>dont brag about your ability to help others and<br>be a great bf/gf. Your very mature and serious<br>and sometimes you may even go over the top in<br>helping others
