"Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man."

—Stuart Udall, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

Today's Care2 Quote of the Day  reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend about "saving the planet, protecting the earth, wildlife, etc."  He made a comment which made all the sense in the world - and, quite frankly,  made me rethink my whole approach to my activism - He said that we're not really saving the planet, protecting the earth, wildlife, etc. . . . we're actually saving/protecting  ourselves . . .

He reasoned that, no matter what we do - even if we did manage to blow ourselves up and thoroughly contaminate the earth - we'd most likely succeed in destroying ourselves,  and we'd probably do a pretty good job of turning most of our structures and creations to dust,  and we might take a few other species with us . . . But, in the end we would not be destroying the earth.   We  would be the only ones to perish . . .

The earth would survive,  as it always has - even through much more devistating extinctions . . . It might take a few centuries or millenia, but the earth would recover - the plant life would grow back,  animal populations would stabilize,  and life on earth would continue,  as it always has . . . minus one species of course - But then someone would step up to claim the top spot (the dinosaurs had their time,  we had ours,  and I'm sure there will be  many, many  more other species just waiting in the wings for us to get on with it and for their time to come, before the earth is really ready to go!!) . . .

So, I guess my friend is right - we don't have to worry about destroying the earth . . . just  ourselves
