Standardbred Adoption Agencies

The following groups primarily provide adoption opportunities for people interested in adopting retired Standardbreds for use as pleasure horses. Generally, the adoption of these horses precludes the new owner from using the Standardbred for racing or breeding purposes. Some of these groups also offer some structured programs for youths and adults geared toward pleasure riding and driving, and some work with youth with special needs. For specific information on the programs offered by each agency, you should contact them directly.

Before you contact one or more of these groups, please read
FAQs about Standardbred Adoption.
It may answer some of your questions about the adoption process and the Standardbred breed.

For more information about Standardbreds, please go to the USTA Standardbred Breed Information page.

This information is provided for your convenience.
The USTA makes no guarantees about the organizations or individuals listed. Please investigate to your own satisfaction before adopting a horse or supporting any charity or individual.
It is strongly recommended that you have a prepurchase exam done on any horse you are thinking of adopting or buying.
If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact
Jamie Rucker, Administrator of the USTA's Standardbred Equine Program, at (614) 224-2291 ext. 3260 or by email to sep@ustrotting.com.

Contacts listed alpahbetically by state or province.
Many of them place horses outside their state.

* indicates that the agency or individual places Standardbreds on a regular basis.
# indicates that the agency or individual places Standardbreds primarily or exclusively.
^ indicates the group is a 501c3 charity, and donations/adoption fees may be tax deductible.

I think anyone with horses should take the time and check out this site.  It has a great list of stolen horses, tack and trailers.
