This is so disturbing, 300,000 elephants depleted to 10,000 in a few years, we must all work together to help stop this murder, please sign petition, repost in your blogs and tell all your friends, what these poachers are doing is robbing the world of a beautiful heritage that can never be replaced.

How come the might of world power can alter the course of history but they can't stop a few men on horseback???? This is a heinous crime against the world's most gentle creatures, we must SAVE THE ELEPHANTS before they are merely a few exhibits in a zoo.

This is illegal - it must stop - we must do whatever we can to bring these mounted poachers to book for what they have done - please take a moment to view the video and learn more about the illegal trade in Ivory !

Name: Richard Evans Schultes
Type: Memorial (for the deceased)
To Honor: Individual(s)
Location: , United States
Richard Evans Schultes
1915-2001

Richard Schultes was the father of modern ethnobotany. He documented the use of more then 2,000 medicinal plants, and gathered some 24,000 specimens. He also gave his name to 120 species, as well as to 2.2 million acres of rain forest protected by the Colombian government. Schultes was among the first to chart the growing threat to the eco-culture of the Amazon.

Schultes believed that tribal people should be approached with the respect due to all people. He treated the often fearsome-looking individuals he met with disarming courtesy and never carried a firearm. "I do not believe in hostile Indians," he said. "All that is required to bring out their gentlemanliness is reciprocal gentlemanliness."

After his retirement from Harvard in 1985 — where he was director of the botanical museum — Schultes, professor emeritus, was honoured with botany's "Nobel prize", the Gold Medal of London's Linnean Society, in 1992.

He was my pen-pal, my friend, and I miss him.

For many years, northern Minnesota people have sought to find appropriate and meaningful ways to honor veteran's. The new Veteran's Memorial Plaza and Statue, located in the heart of the Iron Range, will serve as a permanent symbol of our pride in the role veterans have played and conyinue to play in our nation's history.

The Artist’s Statement:

“My goal was to bring together in a massive piece of art life size figures of varied ethnic backgrounds representing the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, spanning the major wars of the past century and this century, and add to these the unifying symbols of the American bald eagle and the American flag. To accomplish this goal, I selected a representative from each of these military branches and made each a symbol of a major war, thus forming a human time capsule caught agelessly in a single moment of time and space in a unified act. The object of their shared focus is the marker in the field for one of their fallen, one of their own. The eagle forms the backdrop to these veterans and is much larger than life as he represents us all in whatever role we played in the keeping of America.”

The Project
The Iron Range Veterans’ Memorial project features the construction of a magnificent bronze eagle statue measuring 26 feet wide and 14 feet tall. The eagle’s head is thrown back in full cry to illustrate both victory and loss. The feathers on the back of the eagle meld into a field of stars forming a corner of the American flag. Shielded inside the eagle’s wings and the American flag stand five life-size veterans representing all branches of the military service.

If you wish to make a donation to the memorial project

you may send you contributions to:

IRVM P.O. Box 35 Virginia, MN 55792

Donations are tax deductible.

A group has been formed for those interested in this project:

Building Community

Using words to develop friendships, and through friendships build a community of people that care. A community of friends willing to help each other, and together enrich the lives of those around us and improve the enviroment in which we all live; That is my goal. To help accomplish goal this I joined Care2 and set forth to find some friends, share some ideas, and develop a network that can make a difference.
Plants are my pasion and I bring that love for plants to Care2. The people - plant connection is what I wish to share and explore, and through the use of plants I hope to help heal people the environment, and build community in the process. Join me be my friend and share the adventure.
