Today, I am proud to be an American.

My colleage LiAnna wrote a great, short take on the events at the National Mall a bit earlier, and I don't have a ton in me to write a long post right now--more to reflect on, including pics and video (if it's any good) tomorrow. I will concur that it was very cold (and I am from Upstate New York, so I know from cold). It was also somewhat disorganized in terms of crowd control--lots of lines going nowhere without a lot of direction. (My mother, who had logged countless hours knocking on doors, registering voters, and housing field staffers in helping to turn North Carolina blue, never got in despite having a decent color-coded ticket and yes, that makes me mad.)

But it was an extraordinary day. I've lived in D.C. for seven years, and this city has never even come close to feeling as it's felt since about Saturday. People are friendlier, warmer, laughing. The folks I was standing with on the Mall were from all walks of life--a very diverse crowd braving the elements.

This feeling, it's not just about the end of what has been a rough eight years for the country. And I also don't think it's just about the fact that any new presidency brings with it a sense of the new and a promise. I DO think it was about the sense that this president, our new president, will do things differently, and is thinking about things differently at a time when our country desperately needs that. Eight years of toxic partisan combat (some might say 16) has left us all weary, off-kilter, and divided. Obama, more than any other candidate from 2008, promised results and asking us to do it together and to participate as citizens in ways that we haven't been asked in years. And I think we are ready.

Let this new era begin.

(What do you think?)
