If you think Animal Experiments are Necessary Consider The Following:

* Less than 2% of human illnesses (1.16%) are ever seen in animals. Over 98% never are.

* At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer in lab animals. They are
allowed because it is admitted that animal tests are not relevant.

* When asked if they agreed that animal experimentation can be
misleading because of anatomical and physiological differences between
animals and humans, 88% of doctors agreed.

* Rats are 37% effective in identifying what causes cancer in humans. Flipping a coin would be more accurate.

* According to animal tests lemon juice is deadly poison, but arsenic, hemlock and botulin are safe.

* 40% of patients suffer side effects as a result of prescription treatment.

* Over 200,000 medicines have been released most of which are now
withdrawn. According to the World Health Organisation, 240 medicines
are essential.

* Thousands of drugs passed safe in animals have been withdrawn or banned due to their effect on human health.

* Aspirin fails animal tests, as do digitalis (heart drug), cancer
treatments, insulin (causes animal birth defects), penicillin and other
safe medicines. They would be banned if results from animal
experimentation were accurate.

* When the producers of
thalidomide were taken to court, they were aquitted after numerous
experts agreed animal tests could not be relied on for human medicine.

* At least 450 methods exist with which we can replace animal experiments.

* Morphine puts humans asleep but excites cats.

* 95% of drugs passed by animal tests are immediately disgarded as useless or dangerous to humans.

* One is six patients in hospital are there because the drug they have
taken had been passed safe for us on humans after animal tests.

* Worldwide, at least 22 animals die every second in labs. In the UK one animal dies every five seconds.

* The contraceptive pill causes blood clots in humans but it had the opposite effect in dogs.

* We use aspirin for aches and pains. It causes birth defects mice, rabbits and rats.

* Researchers refused to believe that benzene could cause cancer in humans because it failed to in animal tests.

* Dogs failed to predict heart problems caused by the cardiovascular
drugs encainide and flecainide, which led to an estimated 3,000 deaths
in the USA.

* Heart by pass surgery was put on hold for years because it didnt work on dogs.

* If we had relied on animal tests we would still believe that humans
dont need vitamin C, that smoking doesnt cause cause cancer and alcohol
doesnt cause liver damage.

* It was denied for decades that asbestos caused disease in humans because it didnt in animals.

* Polio researchers were mislead for years about how we catch the disease because they had experimented on monkeys.

* As one researcher points out, the ultimate dilemma with any animal
model of human disease is that it can never reflect the human situation
with complete accuracy."

My Dearest Sweet King,

For the first years of your life, I know it seemed that no one cared about you, loved you, wanted you. Times were sad and lonely for you, and perhaps you did not mean much to the others. Then we took you, and you knew that someone cared, someone DID love you, and youu MEANT so much. You always deserved that love and always deserved the dedication.
We had to say goodbye to you, and it hurt us to have to lose you. You mean something to us and we will always LOVE you and honor your life here on earth and pray that you know even more love than you first were born into. I am grief stricken, as daddy and all of your family are. We will remember your sweet face and wagging tail and your playful moments forever. You will always have our hearts forever. Now you have Tyson and Shadow and many many more fun friends to love you as we do. Bless you my sweet Pittie.

My baby, King...I cannot believe this has happened again...I cannot begin to say how hurt we are from losing you
and so close to Tyson.. Grief does not begin to describe what we feel now...I am terribly heartbroken.. May you play forever happily with Tyson and
Shadow...I love you baby..I cannot even express how much. I am sorry we
had to part.

I love you...Mommy

Dear Tyson,
Today was a very hard day for us...we had to say goodbye to you.
We tried to help you, to keep you going, but in the end it seemed that we were doing it more for ourselves than for you.
Today we realized that, through all of your discomfort, you were trying hard to be brave....for your daddy - who rescued you as a baby from a cruel owner. Your daddy who grew up with you and loved you... who brought you home to his mom, all legs and little body, hoping to keep you for good...of course she put up a feeble reserve because you were too adorable to turn away...for your family who was there always for you as you were for them....and for me who was blessed to have you for six years of my life...who also loved you beyond anything.
Today you sleep with the angels and play with your friends who have left before you, and you wait for us to reunite over the Rainbow Bridge....
Our hearts are broken, but we know that you will always be with us forever...until heaven opens up for us and we are once again together.
Play in the meadows of great beauty with Shadow.

Save Horses from the Omak Suicide Race

Annual Washington State rodeo event returns in August

Every
year, as part of the Omak Stampede Rodeo, the small town of Omak in
Eastern Washington State plays host to the Omak Suicide Race, a deadly
competition that has killed at least 20 horses since 1983. The race
will be held again this year from August 10th to 13th.

The
Suicide Race takes place over the course of four days and nights.
Riders begin by careening their horses down Suicide Hill, a 210-foot
plunge at a 62 degree angle (which is close to a vertical 45 degree
angle). The horses then confront the narrow entrance of the Okanogan
River at breakneck speed, often getting caught in bottlenecks and
crashing into one another. Those horses who make it into the river must
swim over 100 yards and make a final desperate sprint up a 500 foot
hill to the finish line.

Many of
the horses used in the Suicide Race suffer heart attacks from
overexertion, broken bones from collisions and even death by drowning.
In the 2004 race, three horses died in the first heat alone. Many more
horses also die later from racing injuries or during practice runs, but
these fatalities are not documented or calculated.

Race
promoters claim that the Suicide Race is a Native American rite of
passage for adolescent boys to become adult men, but it was not
historically a tradition of the twelve Colville Confederated Tribes
that have lived in the area for centuries. Even if it were a tradition,
it would be offensive to turn a sacred rite of passage into a
commercial event. In addition, many of the contestants are well into
their thirties -- well past adolescence -- and race only for money and
fame.

Far from
being a tradition, the Suicide Race was created in 1936 by a local
furniture salesman and publicity chair for the Omak Stampede Rodeo
(which had started the year before) as a way to boost attendance and
tourism. Many people attend the Stampede because it takes place during
the Colville tribes' annual Pow Wow, a fascinating event that showcases
traditional Native American culture. The tribes boycotted the Stampede
in 1999 because it had become too commercial, but later re-endorsed it
after Omak Stampede, Inc. agreed to move the Indian Encampment to a
better location and double the Suicide Race purse to $16,000 -- all
without making the event less commercial. This only shows that the
Suicide race is all about currency, not culture.

What You Can Do:

-Write to
the Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association (PCRA) and urge them to
withdraw their sanction of the deadly Omak Suicide Race. Remind them
that, according to the promoters, the Suicide Race is not separate from
the Omak Stampede, as PCRA has claimed in the past.

Imagine facing certain death simply because there was no place to call home, no family to welcome you in. The sad truth is that over 5 million homeless dogs and cats face that reality every year in this country. These innocent pets are euthanized simply because there is not enough room for them.

Every week, North Shore Animal League America travels near and far visiting shelters that are at full capacity - shelters that euthanize due to overcrowding and the amount of time animals remain there. The League rescues perfectly healthy, loving animals that in some cases only have moments left to be saved.

In January 2005, a young dog named Hootie was running out of time. He was scheduled to be euthanized because his shelter was overcrowded.

Hootie was fortunate that we reached him in time. His life was saved.
Hootie made the journey to North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, New York where he would now be safe at the world's largest no-kill pet rescue and adoption facility. Once an animal comes through our doors, we will care for them until we find the perfect, loving home no matter how long it takes.

Upon evaluation at the League, our medical center staff determined that Hootie had bilateral hip dysplasia and bilateral stifle – both of which require corrective surgery. At other animal facilities, these conditions would have rendered him a lost cause and placed him on a list to be destroyed. Fortunately for Hootie, he was in the care of the League. Thanks to the skill of our veterinarians, the devotion of our medical center staff, and many hours of cage rest and rehabilitation, Hootie made a complete recovery. Once again, Hootie's life was saved.

Thanks to the skill of our veterinarians, the devotion of our medical center staff, and many hours of cage rest and rehabilitation, Hootie made a complete recovery. Once again, Hootie's life was saved.

Months of inactivity and confinement are hard on any dog especially a smart, affectionate dog with a big personality like Hootie. Just as the League's medical center personnel were committed to his physical well-being, our behavior department were committed to his mental well- being and behavior.

Isabelle, a League behavior expert, was determined to help Hootie become the perfect four-legged companion. She worked with Hootie daily and was able to teach him basic obedience skills, how to play fetch, how to "go find" an object on command, agility stunts, and she also was able to house train him. The pair was often seen together, playing, going for car rides to the local park, spending time in Isabelle's office, even visiting her home. He didn't realize it at the time, but fortunately for Hootie, his life was saved again. Most animal control facilities do not have an expert behavior staff. Hootie's inactivity and confinement would have marked him as "unadoptable", and he would have been euthanized.

For over 18 months, the staff at North Shore Animal League America was committed to improving the quality of Hootie's life and giving him the love and care he needed and deserved. There was one thing League just could not provide him - he needed a family and a home to call his own.

On July 20th, the League's dream (and Hootie's!) became a reality. Hootie was adopted by a loving new owner and went home with Laura. Not many pets scheduled to be put down get a second chance at life, let alone a fourth like Hootie. Thanks to the League's dedicated staff, our no-kill policy, and support from donors like you, he has the chance to share his unconditional love with Laura and have a new, loving home.
We know you believe in giving homeless pets a second chance at life. Without your generosity, we would not be able to save the lives of nearly 20,000 animals like Hootie every year.
