Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.
Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.
Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.
The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them.

Doomed: Terrified cats crammed tightly into cages are hauled off to a meat market in Guangzhou
Cat owners, terrified by the disease warning, are dumping their pets in the streets to be picked up by special collection teams.
Paranoia is so intense that six stray cats -including two pregnant females - were beaten to death with sticks by teachers at a Beijing kindergarten, who feared they might pass illnesses to the children.
China's leaders are convinced that animals pose a serious urban health risk and may have contributed to the outbreak of SARS - a deadly respiratory virus - in 2003.
But the crackdown on cats is seen by animal campaigners as just one of a number of extreme measures being taken by communist leaders to ensure that its capital appears clean, green and welcoming during the Olympics.

Polluting factories in and around the city are being ordered to shut down or relocate during the Games to ease Beijing's choking smog and drivers are allowed out on to the roads only three times a week.
Fares on the city's underground network have been cut to just two yuan (14p) for any journey - a six-fold reduction on some routes - to keep people off buses, and beggars and street sleepers are being moved to out-of-town camps or given train fares back to their home provinces.
Meanwhile, taxi drivers have been made to attend lessons in how to greet passengers politely in English and a city-wide courtesy campaign has been launched to teach Beijing's notoriously dour and grumpy citizens how to smile and be pleasant to foreigners.
The cull of Beijing's estimated 500,000 cat population is certain to provoke international outrage as it comes just over a year after the Chinese were criticised for rounding up and killing stray dogs across the country.

Refuge: Campaigner Hu Yuan, 80, with some of the 250 cats she has taken in at her Beijing home
Animal welfare groups in China are already protesting, but their members fear punishment from the authorities.
Officials say people can adopt animals from the 12 cat pounds set up around the city, but welfare groups say they are almost impossible to get inside and believe few cats survive.
One cat lovers' group negotiated the release of 30 pets from one of the compounds in Shahe, north-west Beijing, but said they were in such a pitiful condition that half of them died within days of their release.
"These cats are being left to die. It is very inhumane," said the group's founder Yan Qi, who runs a sanctuary for cats.
A rescued pet showing clear signs of disease
"People don't want to keep cats in Beijing any more so they abandon them or send them to the compounds.
"When we went inside, we saw about 70 cats being kept in cages stacked one on top of the other in two tiny rooms.
"Disease spreads quickly among them and they die slowly in agony and distress. The government won't even do the cats the kindness of giving them lethal injections when they become sick. They just wait for them to die.
"It is the abandoned pets that suffer the most and die the soonest. They relied so much on their owners that they can't cope with the new environment.
"Most refuse to eat or drink and get sick more quickly than the feral cats."
Ms Yan's group has now been denied access to the pounds. "We do not believe any of the cats that go in there survive," she said. "They are like death camps."
Ms Yan said there was another reason for people abandoning their cats - the 200 yuan (£14) fee they face if they want to have their pets neutered and tagged.
"We have tried to negotiate with the government to stop the round-ups and to introduce cut-price neutering services so that people can afford to keep their pets but they won't listen to us," she said.
"They are not thinking about the cats. They just want to get results in the quickest way possible, by clearing as many cats from the city as they can."
Retired doctor Hu Yuan, 80, runs one of the few remaining refuges for abandoned pets in her ramshackle home in the ancient Long Tou Jing area of Beijing.
She shares her tiny home with 250 abandoned cats and has taken in 70 over the past 12 months alone.
She pays for neutering and food from her pension and donations. She said: "If I don't take them in, the government will kill them.
"People believe what the government tells them and that is why they are abandoning more and more family pets."
She said the problem could be traced back to former president Jiang Zemin for the crackdown.
"He didn't like dogs so he decided to have dogs killed. But there was a bad reaction from the foreign media and they were pressured to stop.
"Now they have stopped killing dogs but the new victims are cats. It is all connected to the Olympics."
Cats are regularly dumped on her doorstep late at night by owners frightened by the government campaign.
"The situation is very bad now," said Ms Hu. "When women get pregnant, the doctor will ask them if they have a cat in the house.
"If they reply Yes, they tell them, 'You must get rid of it, it will be bad for the baby'.
"I keep all the cats in my house and 100 of them sleep in my bedroom at night. I am too frightened to let them out. If they go outside, they will be taken away and killed.
"The government is not telling people the truth. Look at me. I live with them 24 hours a day, seven days a week and I am very healthy."
The round-up has been particularly intense in areas around Olympic venues and in streets and alleys surrounding five-star hotels where guests will stay during the summer games.
Despite the health warnings, the round-up of cats has led to a surge in the number of restaurants in the capital serving cat meat, according to Ms Hu.
She said hundreds of cats were also being sent to Guangzhou in southern China, an area infamous for restaurants that serve meat from cats and dogs and exotic animals such as snakes and tigers.
It was in July last year that district officials were instructed to begin an intense round-up of cats as part of Beijing's pre-Olympics clean-up. Now notices have been put up urging residents to hand in cats.
Welfare groups estimate that tens of thousands have been collected in the past few months.
The Mail on Sunday went to the cat pound in Shahe on the north-western fringes of Beijing but we were repeatedly refused admission.
"No one can come in without official papers," staff shouted from behind padlocked steel gates.
At another, larger compound in Da Niu Fang village, the sound of cats wailing could be clearly heard coming from a cluster of tin-roofed sheds, but workers denied they were holding any cats.
"There are no cats here, go away. No one is allowed inside unless you have official permission," a security guard said.
The killing of the six stray cats at the kindergarten - where staff at a Beijing cigarette factory leave their children - is the most striking illustration of the city-wide fear of cats.
A teacher at the nursery said: "We did it out of love for the children. We were worried the cats might harm them. These six cats had been hanging around the kindergarten looking for food.
"So three male teachers put out plates of tuna in cages for bait, trapped the cats and then beat them to death with sticks.
"We were very worried the children might try to stroke them and that the cats might scratch them or pass on diseases. We had to get rid of the cats and this was the only way to do it."
Christie Yang of the charity Animals Asia, which liaises with the Beijing animal welfare groups, said: "We are seriously concerned.
"We understand that with the Olympic Games the Beijing government is eager to show the world the city in a good light.
"But capturing and dealing with cats in such an inhumane way will seriously tarnish the image of Beijing and the Games."
• Names of the animal campaigners have been changed as the people we interviewed are concerned about officials' reaction to our story.
If everybody we know emails a request (not for tickets, but for China's action for Burma) to email@example.com, it will significantly slow down Olympics ticket sales and call China's attention to the matter. China may ignore protests, hunger strikes, petitions, wearing-red shirts, etc. But China cannot ignore these emails, which get in the way of processing Olympics ticket requests.
Please see the template at the bottom. Please also pledge to send the same email every 6 hours, or every time you check your email. If they get tens of thousands of email a day, they will have to do something about it.
China should use its leverage to bring reconciliation and peace in Burma. However, it recently vetoed a Security Council resolution on Burma. Yet with the threat of Olympics boycott, China has yielded significantly to condemn Sudan's genocidal regime.
Please note that this action is NOT a call to boycott the Olympics. Even though I do have an appeal on my site. If it turns into a worst case scenario. ============================================

Subject: re: tickets
I am very interested in purchasing tickets to some of the events at next year's Olympic games.
However I cannot, in good conscience, attend the Beijing Olympics unless your government uses its influence to improve the political situation in Burma. China has substantial economic interests in the country, provides large amounts of economic aid, and invests heavily in infrastructure projects there. Additionally, your government provides extensive logistical support to Burma's military government. All this make China uniquely placed to influence it.
The people of Burma have, in a very peaceful manner, insisted that their rights be respected. I ask no more of your government than that it cease its support for the current regime, and encourage dialog with the democratically elected representatives of the Burmese nation.
I, the Burmese people, and the world would be grateful for your assistance in this matter. Your courage will go a long way towards making the 2008 Olympics a success.
JUST RECEIVED THIS WHICH I EDITED FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. I TRULY AM AT LOSS FOR WORDS.....! SORRY ABOUT THE MANNER OF THIS ALERT BUT TIME IS RUNNING OUT-- PLEASE WRITE PROTESTING AND ALSO FOWARD THIS FAR AND WIDE.
PS: Last week we started sending out alerts asking people to write to the office in charge of the killings in Changshou--thousands of lettes were faxed, or emailed to them -- to no avail. I am truly at loss for words...Below are some other steps you may wish to take. We at A.F.S. are regrouping to see what else we may be able to do at this point.
Thanks for your help.

====================== Dear friends,
...Tears are still in my eyes and I really don't know where to start...
The "dog killing teams" in Changshou have already killed almost all the stry dogs by now - between 1000-2000 of them with the cruelest way one can imagine...
Before the deadline of June 10, the local government called for the pet dog owners "solve" their own dogs themselves, otherwise they'll have to "help" them solve the problem. Under the high pressure and out of irresponsibility, many owners drown their own dogs with a plastic bags with its throats tightly tied. Everyday since June 1-10, people salvaged several dozens of bodies of dogs died this way...
Mr.---- has had his man shot all the process with a video. Yesterday, the three volunteers he sent to take pictures saved two half died dogs from the butcher knife of the killers. Two of them are young girls and they told them the "dog killing teams" that the two dogs are theirs... They have pictures of the process of dog saving. However, later when they witnessed and shot the garbage trucks with bags of bodis of killed dogs and the horrible killing instruments, one little dog's eyeball were beaten off/out... they've got a paralysis on the ground... One of the dog they saved is about 2 kg weight and was hit by thick wood stick on the head. Other major traping and killing instruments include iron fork, bamboo staff, dog clincher clip, etc. Amazing news: for the "dog killing teams", they receive 30 yuan or $4 once they killed a dog. There's a place called Guang Kou where by the end of the day, all the "dog killing teams" meet up and count on their "results of battle" and silently count how much they can earn that day. Good business for them. The "dog killing teams" members are maily from neighborhood committee and assistant policemen and gangsters.
In the countryside, before June 10th, the village committee gave each family a bag of poison and asked them to kill their dogs. Every bag of poison costs about 5 yuan or $0.7 according to M----.
Ju Wei Hui - the neighborhood or residents committees - the lowest level of Chinese government, have all the list of families who have dogs. Since now almost all the stray dogs have been killed, next step would be the pet dogs. Many pet dog owners say the police don't have the right to force into any citizen's home. OK, now, they've worked out something smart - a general forage for order is ready and they can get into anybody's house now. The policy would most likely be: first, mobilize or threaten the owners to surrender their pet dogs themselves. Otherwise they won't be polite any more. They'll use any instrument they think necessary to trap and kill the dogs.
A true story happened in Changshou: an elderly lady has kept her two dogs at home for so long that one day she silently opened her door hoping to walk her dogs. As soon as the dogs were out and she found everything was too late: there standing the "dog killing team". The dogs were caught and killded by the impatient team immediately.
Another two true stories: A 15-16 years old Beijing girl has a pet dog whom she regarded as her best friend, sister or brother. The police came to her home forcing to take the dog away. Knowing what kind of fate is waiting for her friend, she told the policement: if you dare to take him away, I'll jump from the roof of this building. The policemen did take her words seriously. They forced into her room and killed the dog in front of her. She cried like hell and run to the roof of her building and jumped from there...
An eldly lady in Shenyang, northeast China, was on the way taking her dog to the police station to get her dog registered before the deadline. They were caught by a "dog killing team". They didn't listen to her at all and killed the dog in front of her. She has had a heart attack and slipped up on the ground. Before she died, she used her last strength try to creep/approach her dog and hold him. Their bodies can't be aparted...
Dear friends, there's endless unhead of miserable yet touching stories. During my most recent trip to ----- I found soooooooooo many stray dogs. TNR is so important. I left some money to two Tibetan families who treat their animals well (yaks, cow, goats, cats, dogs, pigs and chickens!) Will send you some pictures when I feel better.
BTW, M--- will have his people send me update pictures of Changshou --- They really need help. Police are watching them - there're many proofs.
Let's pray for the poor souls together and may they rest in peace in heaven...
Forgive me for my poor English, spelling and grammar mistakes.... Many thanks!
I just forwarded this letter + my intro to my senator
Dear Senator ___ : I am in touch with Animal Rights activists in China who are trying to take pictures of a dog massacre that is taking place in Changshou. The goverment decided to kill __all__ the dogs in the city. I think this is not about just pets - it is about human rights. I am asking you to help - please, forward my email to a someone in the US goverment who will be willing to take a look at the China as a human rights abuser. Thank you very much in advance.
If you are a US citizen - contact your senator. This will work. I just spoke to a someone in the US goverment, and they said that this is a correct route. Olga
This is outrageous. I faxed some letters for the Chineese embassy, but there were polite letters. I think the time ended to be polite. This is not just about dogs - it is about human rights. This is what I thougth will happen - I am not a bit surprised. China disregarded the humans and pets. They disregard their own citizens.
We only have 3 days. Please write letters, forward this, do whatever you can to prevent this bloody massacre which is about to happen AGAIN !

Dear Sir / Madam,
We are shocked and outraged to learn that the Chongging authorities will be confiscating and killing again pet dogs. We would like to request that you urgently address this matter by significantly reducing the registration fees for dogs, whilst working in conjunction with animal groups, like the Animals Asia Foundation, to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
The existing registration fee per dog and subsequent annual renewal fee, is quite simply beyond the means of most citizens in Chongging resulting in citizens keeping their beloved dogs illegally, and often too frightened to seek outside help to vaccinate or de-sex them.
Scientific studies throughout the world have shown that keeping companion animals gives incredible mental and physical health benefits. Pet owners are proven to live longer and are more happy, balanced people than non-pet owners.
With just over 150 million pet dogs throughout China, pet ownership is booming and it is vital that you recognise pets play an increasingly crucial role in today’s society. It is simply not possible for Chongging to achieve the status of a modern city with such a barbaric and unrealistic attitude towards animals. There are already numerous humane solutions to ensure that dogs and people can co-exist peacefully and safely in the modern world and thus there is simply no excuse for the current brutal measures being taken against dogs and their devastated owners.
We implore you to immediately cease these cruel measures and introduce public education initiatives to ensure that dogs are treated with the respect that they deserve, so that China is in line with international standards.
your name Country

I caught a bad cold as soon as I returned to Beijing - too excited and too tired may be. And sorry for being slow in response - so tired, so much work to do, and so many new born kitties to catch... like tonight...
I'm writing today to report an old bad news: another large scale dog culling is about to start on June 10 in Changshou, Chongqing. Yes, Chongqing again! The origin was a death of a man who was bited by a black dog who believes carried rabies virus. The man got the rabies bacterin shot immediately and died when he got the final shot - the fifth shot. Nobody knows he died because of the bite or the poor quality of the domestic bacterin. And nobody knows where the black dog is now. The Changshou District Government has announced publicly that because of the death, they're going to kill all the dogs in Changshou area- dogs with owner or homeless dogs. Total amount is nearly 20,000.
Mr, Chen Mingcai, President of Chongqing Small Animal Protection Association, is working hard to lobbing the local government for two days now. We keep close contact. Please don't preveal his name in order to protect him. He's our only hope there.
PLEASE, send petition letters to the follow fax number: +0086-23-4023 1484. It's an automatic fax number of the Changshou District Government's office.

Letter writing campaigns. Writing a letter to the editor of major newspapers and media can help enlighten and inform readers. Your letter can be easily submitted to hundreds of newspapers. Just write a 250 word letter with a link to this site at www.byteland.org/boycottchina and send your letter via email to hundreds of newspapers. You can generate your own email list of newspapers/editors using the service at the Media Awareness Project. Use the MAP email search directory and do a two letter search for your state as FL, TX, CA, NY or IL. This will generate an email list that you can cut/paste and save as a text file. Then you can use this email list in your address book of groups to send your letter to the editor. Other good searches are for names of newspapers such as SUN, POST, TRIBUNE, DAILY, CHRONICLE, HERALD, ADVERTISER, ADVOCATE, JOURNAL, GUARDIAN, VOICE or NEWS. Be sure to include your real name, home address and phone number as many newspapers will want to varify that you are the author and give you notice that they will print your letter. The MAP site also has very good information that can help you to write better editorial letters. Remember to include a link to the Boycott Made in China site at www.byteland.org/boycottchina so that people will be able to visit this link, see photographs of dogs being killed, research the topic and become better educated. Over time this will have a great effect as each letter on this issue that is published will reach tens of thousands of people. In this way over time more people may become active and help promote the effort to boycott China in protest of the inhumane killing of dogs and how this practice terrorizes pet owners.
Note: when using MAP to generate email list you may need to edit the resulting list to add a comma between each entry before droping it into the "send" or "groups" section of your email server or address book.
You can also contact members of the Senate or locate your representative in Congress and address a letter to them such that they become aware of how dogs are being killed by the tens of thousands in China. Update Wikipedia to advocate that people stop eating dogs! Advocates for eating dog meat are using the on-line Wikipedia to promote and justify the eating of dog meat based upon such illogical reasoning as the fact that dogs have been slaughtered and used for food for thousands of years and that millions of dogs are regularly killed for their meat annualy in a number of countries, as if the practice itself by a particular culture justifies the practice (a form of illocial, circular reasoning). People have also been killed and murdered for thousands of years, but this does not make killing people moral or justifiable! Efforts to update the Wikipedia to express an alternative point of view have resulted in censorship. Everyone who loves dogs and does not believe that the Wikipedia should be used to promote the eating of dog meat are asked to please help visit the dog meat post and add the following codes:
In 2006 corrupt communist government officials ordered the killing of tens of thousands of dogs under the false pretense that this would be effective in the control of rabies, taking pet dogs from the homes of owners and bludgeoning them to death, marketing the canine by-products for huge profits. This has resulted in the call for an international boycott of products made in china (http://www.byteland.org/boycottchina/index.html). Modern Trends

Project K9 (http://www.byteland.org/projectk9/index.html) founder and animal rights advocate Terry Lynch (email@example.com) has called for an international boycott of all products made in Red China to protest the canine genocide for profit and the eventual overthrow of the communist government that is using the killing of pet dogs to enrich their coffers and maintain power and control over helpless people.
Hello, Although I do not like the WWF for various reasons I love tigers and think this is a good campaign. Please sign and add your photo to the mosaic.
This is a time of great importance for Tiger conservation - despite the success of a 1993 domestic trade ban in tiger parts and international calls to maintain it, China is considering reopening the trade! This one decision would undoubtably cause the exinction of the tiger as we know it! Please, take a stand for this species and tell China to keep the ban permanent!
Please, take action here! Spread the word and share this information with everyone you know. Your decision could mean the difference between the tiger surviving and the tiger being eaten into exinction!
Dogs are crammed so tightly together into tiny metal cages they cannot even bark. Yards away the blood-spattered carcasses of others lie on the ground.
This is Three Birds' Market in Guangzhou, China, officially described as a poultry market.
But, as these exclusive pictures show, many traders on the 60-acre site are doing brisk business selling dogs and cats to restaurants for slaughter and human consumption.
It is replacement for the Xinyuan animal market in the same city, closed down last year after international outrage over its treatment of animals and a possible link to the SARS virus.
But the brutality has not gone away. The new £33 million market opened at the end of last year and so far 900 businesses are renting space.
Cages of dogs and cats - some of them bred as domestic pets - are piled high and when an animal is chosen for sale it is bludgeoned with an iron bar until it is close to death before, being handed over to the purchaser.
"The customers want fresh 'live' meat," said Huang Lu Sheng, one of the stallholders.
"When the dog dies slowly there is much more flavour in the meat. Some customers want the dog half-dead.
"Then the taste is very strong and they can prove to their customers that the meat is really fresh.
"I do not care about the dog suffering. It is only to eat and the customer is the one that chooses how it should die.
"But most customers actually want the dog beaten to death and put in a plastic bag. It's easier to carry like that."
A teenager we saw holding a hollow metal pole was an expert in "not quite killing" the animals, we were told.
As his colleague held the dog's neck with long metal calipers to prevent them moving, the young man struck each dog with the pole several times on the skull. Each swing of the metal bar resulted in a dull thump and a desperate whimper from the poor animal.
The unconscious dogs, with blood dripping from their head wounds and mouths, were dumped outside the cage. Next they were bound with metal wire and strapped onto a motorbike or thrown into the back of a lorry.
Sheng went on to explain that butchered meat is also sold, with the dogs killed before being dipped in boiling water to remove their fur.
His stall is one of at least 30 at the market that specialise in dogs - although he would not discuss prices.
He sells around 500 a month but, having only been trading for two months, he expects business to increase as more customers hear about the new market.
Even in the absence of any animal rights legislation, Three Birds' owners are wary of plying their gruesome trade too openly, and advertising for the market refers only to poultry.
At the entrance, there are cages full of ducks, geese, chicken and wildfowl. But further inside, away from the public, are the stalls trading in cats and dogs.
The cats sell for around £1 per kilo wholesale. Weighed by the dozen on large scales, they end up in restaurants, where they are sold for around £1.65 per kilo to the public.
Restaurant owners and middlemen buy them by the sack-load to use in tiger, phoenix and dragon soup - a delicacy actually consisting of cat, chicken and snake.
Sadly there were many children in the market witnessing the cruelty.
Zhang Xiao Mei, the 12-year-old daughter of a cat and dog stallholder, said: "I do not want to see this. I hate it when I see my father killing these animals.
"I have nightmares about getting chased by dogs that have blood all over their tongues.
Around 10 million dogs are slaughtered for food annually in China where dog meat is said to increase the positive energy of one's body (the yang) and improve circulation.
Cat meat is also considered to be warming, with the stomach, intestines and thighs consumed for their perceived benefits and the rest of the animal thrown away.
The Three Birds' Market proves that despite China's bid to clean up its act before the Beijing Olympics next year, on the issue of animal cruelty it still has a long way to go.
I have good news and bad news for you. Let's have the bad news first- Wanzhou. I know how much you care about the dogs there. Here's the report: For the whole day today, I've been watching closely about the every development there. I called the different government departments, the Wanzhou District top boss (Wanzhou is under Chongqing), the volunteers and local AAF rep... From what I've learnt, the government has conceded to agree that as long as the dog with owner has been given the anti-rabies bacterin injection, they won't be killed, at least at the moment. After the local newspaper reported that, so many people have taken their dogs to get the injection, especially today because it's the deadline. These dogs are safe for now, thanks greatly to all your hard working and efforts - you made them had to think twice before they put their hands to these dogs. So shall we say our efforts are not in vain?
When it comes to the homeless dogs it's a different story. Even this morning when I talked to one official, he repeated the same story that I've heard many times - they'll catch them and put them together, observe them then to see if they carry the rabies virus. If they do, they'll be killed in the humane way. I kept asking about the "humane way" and finally they told me it'll be "electric shot" death. The morning pasted in a raletively peaceful way. Mr. Chen Mingcai, President of Chongqing Small Animal Protection Association, who's been in Wanzhou for many days trying to work out a solution and even offered to take all the homeless dogs away with him to Chongqing and build a shelter for them. He won't ask for a penny from the government. But his offer was denied by the governemnt because there's a "law" issued in 2003 - the SARS year - which ordering that once the rabies epidemic situation happened, all dogs living in the range of 3 sq.km should be killed immediately without exceptions. Mr. Chen organized a team of volunteers to walk around the city closely. They've caught or save a few dozens of homeless dogs and transferred them in a safe place to hide. At 4 pm, Chen told me that a video cameraman who's sent by an animal lover from Beijing, was arrested when he shot the policement killing a homeless dog right in the street and the volunteers trying to grab back the second dog the policemen were going to kill. By 6 pm, he told me the cameraman was freed but what he shot was washed - very likely the only video witness of the whole blooding scenes. What a pity and lost! So the government hasn't kept their words and started the bloody killing exactly according to their plan.
Let's pray for their poor souls, my friends...
Now the good news: Animals Asia Foundation has approved my proposal about setting up an Emergency Aid Station for the Rescued Tianjin Cats as a special project of their "Friends or food" program. Though the fund is limited, but I'm more than happy to have the chance to save more cats in my own way - the way I think is right and best for the cats. So friends, please congratulate me after so many sad, bad, troubled news....And the best thing is now you can officially send your kind donation directly to AAF's account in so many countries online!

I am sure most of you are aware of the Dog Cull that is going to be underway soon in Chongqing. I have seen many bulletins about it. I am offering to fax letters to the Gov't in Chongqing for anyone that does not have a fax or cannot afford the overseas charges.
What I ask:
No profanity No threats PERSONALIZE YOUR LETTERS (even if it is just three sentences) No spam in my mailbox
Send your letters to firstname.lastname@example.org and I will get them faxed ASAP. They will get lost if you send them anywhere else.
This is very important! It is going to take TON of letters to get them to stop this mass murder. Get off your tush and write a letter! PLEASE!!!
Here are 2 letter samples posted by members in Care2 groups :
Dear Wanzhou Government Officials:
I wholly oppose the Wanzhou district's plan to slaughter all companion dogs in an anti-rabies sweep of the southwestern city of Chongqing. I understand residents must relinquish their dogs for extermination by March 15, 2007. Police will use electric shock to kill every companion dog in the area.
I implore officials to cancel the cull, scheduled to begin after March 16. Please initiate a widespread vaccination program in place of violence. I urge local, provincial and national authorities to acknowledge vaccination drives as the most efficient means to assure public health. Gratuitous killing is profoundly cruel -- to both animals and citizens who love them.
Beijing's similar clampdown on strays and unregistered pets generated such negative publicity, officials called it off. Individuals and organizations worldwide were outraged by accounts of officers beating puppies until dead. The media has condemned mass culls as a crude form of "disease prevention," especially when rabies can be managed through inoculation and cooperation between human, animal and municipal health agencies.
Reactive mass culls have proven incapable of curbing stray populations or inhibiting disease outbreaks. I ask the Wanzhou government to respect its own citizens, as well as those around the world, who regard companion dogs as family members. Certainly authorities in a modern city can devise non-violent ways to handle public safety concerns.
Please foster a culture of responsible guardianship, rabies prevention, and humane animal control. If the brutal extermination of dogs begins on March 16, 2007, it will irreversibly shame China and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
In fact, mass culls in the Yunnan province (July 25-30, 2006) and Beijing (November 2006) have already prompted a worldwide boycott of Chinese tourism and products. Please call off the slaughter of all companion animals and restore China's integrity.
I respectfully await your reply,
2) Another one :
I am shocked to learn yet of another slaughter coming up in Chongqing. The world has not forgotten the recent death sweep of culls in other provinces. More than 50,000 dogs were viciously beaten, hung, electrocuted or poisoned. Some companion animals out walking with families were forcibly taken and clubbed on the spot. Others were defenseless strays, ambushed at night.
Now, guardians in Chongqing fear for their dogs' lives. These reactive mass culls have proven incapable of curbing stray populations or inhibiting disease outbreaks. I implore the Chonging municipal government to respect its own citizens, as well as those around the world, who regard companion dogs as family members. Certainly authorities in a modern city can devise non-violent means to handle animal-human health concerns.
Please recognize the growing number of Chinese households with companion animals. Some who opt to remain childless, or aged citizens who live alone, view dogs as companions or "children." Saint Bernards, Golden Retrievers and other large breed dogs are gentle giants who commonly assist blind or special-needs people. The animal-human bond is based in love and trust.
On the other hand, the government is responsible for environment and disease control. Perhaps officials can implement a more effective and stable strategy. Other communities have successfully contained lupomania through vaccination or the de-sexing of dogs. I urge you to initiate a non-lethal plan that includes public access to low-cost vaccination, spay/neuter programs, and humane education.
As you know, news of Chinese dog killings speeds across the internet and global press. Individuals and organizations worldwide are outraged by accounts of officers who corner barking dogs and puppies and beat them until dead. The media has condemned this crude form of "disease prevention" — especially when diseases such as rabies and lupomania can be managed through inoculation and a network of human health, animal health and municipal agencies.
Once again, I respectfully ask Chinese officials to make enforceable animal protection laws a priority before the 2008 Olympics. You can begin by replacing dog massacres with humane and scientific tactics to control lupomania transmission. Please foster a culture of responsible guardianship and disease prevention.
If Chongqing's brutal extermination of dogs begins on March 16, 2007, it will irreversibly shame China and the 2008 Olympics held in Beijing. I await your response.
