The Leland Mississippi Shelter is in such dire need that Jamie and I have decided to make an emergency run from Rushville Indiana to Leland Mississippi. The United States Animal Protection, a national animal rights group is helping with the van, vaccines and more, the volunteer's at ARRF are giving us a place to stay overnight and chipping in towards gas. The situationuppies have been freezing to death outside, rats are eating the dog food, sewage backs up into the shelter. The City of Leland owns the building but will not even provide food for the animals. The 4 volunteers have exhausted themselves physically and financially. In addition to the shelter being overflowing, a hoarder is willing to give up the 42 dogs he has. Leland is in dire circumstances! We will carry dog food, vaccines, tools to make necessary shelter repairs and provide womanpower to coordinate a weekend rescue effort. We will also be documenting the conditions at the shelter and the many starving strays in Leland.
If you are a rescue and are willing to take some of the Leland dogs, please message Gabby or email Linda at ubenframed@cinci.rr.com. We are also working to coordinate with rescues along our route home in hopes that we can find safety for the left over animals. We will be traveling through Cincinnati OH, Louisville KY, Bowling Green KY, Nashville TN, Memphis TN, Leland MS. Interstates I61, I40,I65. We leave for Leland on Friday March 28 and return early on March 31th. To see the conditions at the shelter visit www.arrf-arrf-org
We are raising money to help with the cost of the van rental, gas money, supplies, vaccines etc. Any cash left over will be given to the voluteers at ARRF who take care of the dogs at this destitute shelter. Where chipin logo doesn't work you can donate thru paypal: ubenframed@cinci.rr.com ( I realize the irony of the email but it is a take on my business name, custom framing!) Thank you,

Despite a national law banning the practice, close to 500 000 dogs are slaughtered and eaten in the Philippines every year. Even though since 1998 it is illegal to consume this meat, the complete lack to enforce this law allows the markets and the restaurants to openly sell live dogs as well as dog meat. The majority of Filipinos do not consume this meat, but its profitable commerce is growing, especially in the north of the Philippines in and around the region of Baguio City. Here the dogs are treated like vulgar objects. Crammed so tightly into wire cages they cannot move, struggling for every breath in the stifling heat with their mouths tied shut, dogs have their throats cut while still conscious. Luckily you can make a difference. Canada, like many other nations, have an important commercial relationship with the Philippines. Our Philippines colleagues are putting diplomatic pressure on their government in order to have them act out against the dog meat industry. Act now bsending an email to the ambassador of the Philippines and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Although the majority of the Filipino population is against eating their dear family pet, or anyone else’s for that matter, there is still a large group of people located primarily in and around Baguio City and in the Cordilleras region who partake in the eating of dog meat. This is probably because dog meat is traded so openly and because there are numerous restaurants and eateries (approximately 60) that serve dog meat. The dogs that supply these restaurants and markets are transported from all over the Philippines, including the far reaching areas such as the southern Tagalog provinces, Visayas, and Mindanao. When they reach their destination, they are sold for as little as $1.30 USD/kg compared to pork and beef which are sold for $2.10 USD/kg and $3.00 USD/kg respectively. This is one of the reasons why dog meat is so popular. Another reason, which contributes to the cheap cost of the meat, is that dogs are readily available and don’t need to be raised as they are found abundantly on the streets of every Philippines city. Individuals can be hired to catch stray dogs, providing an economic incentive to help maintain this market. Approximately half of the dogs that are stuffed in small cages in the vehicles for transportation to Baguio City and the Cordilleras region die of starvation and dehydration. You may think that this is a loss of profit, but many of these dead dogs are passed off as being alive and are slaughtered nonetheless. The dogs that do survive this arduous journey are made to suffer even more as they are transported directly to illegal slaughterhouses. There they are removed from their cramped cages using looped poles and bashed in the head several times with the pole until they become unconscious. They are then slashed in the throat at the location of the jugular vein so that the blood that gushes out can be collected and then sold. Following this, the dog’s body is placed over a fire to burn its fur. The dog is finally cut into however many desired pieces for sale to restaurants and public wet markets. ~Sample Letter Dear Ambassador (name of ambassador),
I am writing to you to express my strong concerns about the dog meat trade in the Philippines. I commend your government for instituting national legislation banning the dog meat trade, but I understand that stronger laws and increased enforcement are needed to put a final end to this cruel practice.
I was horrified to learn from Global Action Network that dogs destined for slaughter in Baguio are transported under such appalling conditions that up to 50% of them die en-route, while the survivors have their throats cut while still conscious.
I urge you to do all within your power to encourage your government to further its efforts to eliminate the dog meat trade completely. As a compassionate traveler, I choose tourism destinations that are committed to treating animals humanely. Only when the dog meat trade has been ended, will I consider traveling to the Philippines.
Sincerely, (Your name and address)
In addition to writing your local Philippines ambassador you can further voice your concerns directly to the Philippines President through her website or by writing a letter urging her to put an end to the Philippines dog meat trade.

----------------- Bulletin Message ----------------- From: Critter Crossings, Non Profit Dog Rescue Date: Oct 6, 2007 12:01 AM I left Lily at our vet this afternoon for emergency surgery, not only is the left eye bad and painful but the right eye has corneal damage as well which our vet said couldn't wait. She went immediately in for antibiotics and pain meds to prepare her for surgery/
You can see how tiny she is in the pics, maybe under 2 lbs. She was found by my neighbor's friend/neighbor at a job site on Thursday.
Vet suspects that it is due to herpes virus - I don't know cats so it's all new to me, but she's darling, purring, sweet and friendly - worth saving. She's extra endearing with her will to live and sweetness despite her pain.
Thanks for crossposting - obviously the previous estimate was one eye removal - now we're looking at more and the vet's guess (under pressure from me) was about $400.
Thank you to donors for donating $26 thus far - every dollar truly helps.

Although we are a DOG rescue who could turn down a cat, actually KITTEN, in urgent need like this. We have scheduled an appointment with our vet TODAY at 2:30 (PST) to get pain meds, steroids, antibiotics - whatever this kitty needs to be freed from this pain. Once stable and well enough for surgery, the eye will be removed and she'll, of course, be spayed - our vet is estimating a cost of around or under $200.
PLEASE HELP LILY! Click here to donate, PLEASE REFERENCE "LILY CAT" so that the funds go directly toward her care and surgery.
and once well this kitty will need a home... if you would like to apply, please contact me at crittercrossings@gmail.com
charlene Oct 4 (13 hours ago) to Critter Crossings <crittercrossings@gmail.com> date Oct 4, 2007 9:22 PM subject kitten in need signed-by yahoo.com mailed-by yahoo.com Hi Julie, I am sending a pic of a kitten that is in need of an eyeball removal. I am going into Chico with her in the morning to see if one of the vets there is willing to help. I won't hold my breath. As far as raising funds... Because I am not a non-profit and am on disability my $ is closely scrutinized by the powers that be. It makes things a little difficult if you know what I mean. If there is something you can do, your help would be appreciated, but please don't stress about it if you can't. I have no idea what it costs to remove an eye. I took this picture on the 27th. I put the kitten on a course of antibiotics, topical and oral. There is no sign of infection now, but the eye is coming out with or without a doctors help. It has since dried out despite my efforts. Unfortunately there is nothing more that anyone but a surgeon can do for her. She is otherwise in good health, eating and drinking with enthusiasm. She's probably about 5-6wks old.
Hope all is well with you. My cell number is 592-xxxx. I lost your cell number in the mess we're making here. I'll talk to you soon. Thanks, Charlene

They range from $220-250. Most won't give estimates over the phone. I didn't mean to imply that I expected them to work for free. I just get sick and tired of the run around. I guess that's one of the main reasons I didn't finish my veterinary education. It's hard to put a price tag on a life even if it is "just an animal." If you want to take her in and are willing to do so then YES of course. I have to make a run to Chico and Oroville (Dr. Appointments) I will be back around 12:30. I'll call you before I leave.

Mars Inc. still conducts deadly animal tests and this needs to be stopped! Please take action on this campaign!
Before stocking up on candy this Halloween, you should know that chocolate-maker Mars Inc.—creator of M&M's, Snickers, and other candies—continues to fund deadly animal tests despite the fact that the tests are not required by law and more reliable human studies could be used instead.
Mars has funded cruel experiments in which mice were fed a candy ingredient and forced to swim in a pool of paint. The mice had to find a platform to try to avoid drowning, only to be killed and dissected later. In another experiment supported by Mars, rats were fed cocoa and anesthetized with carbon dioxide so that their blood could be collected by cardiac puncture, a procedure that can lead to internal bleeding and other deadly complications. Mars also supported an experiment that involved cramming baby mice into small Plexiglas chambers and then submerging the chambers for nearly five hours in a chilled water bath to determine whether or not a chocolate ingredient affected the mice's breathing rates. In the second phase of this test, experimenters shoved tubes down mice's throats to force-feed them an ingredient in chocolate, deprived them of all other food, and finally killed them and cut them up for analysis.
Mars' top competitor, Hershey's, has pledged to PETA that it will not fund or conduct experiments on animals. Please urge Mars to follow Hershey's lead and immediately end all support for animal tests!
To make sure Mars Inc. can't ignore your concern, please also take the time to call Mars Inc. at 1-800-627-7852 and urge the company to end all support for animal tests.
All of the animals on this bulletin are located in Warner Robins GA. They have all been abandoned at a boarding and grooming business after their owners never came back or refused to come back to get them. The Boarding facility asked me to help see if I could not find these sweat animals forever homes. Some of them have been staying at the business for over three years. None of these animals should live their lives inside these cages!
Please contact me if you would like any other info on these animals, or if you are interested in adopting.
I have a transport that is available from Ga all the way up the east coast to Maine if needed. Please help these poor animals find loving homes REPOST!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!All animals are up to date on shots and have been fully vetted!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boomer is a corgi lab mix. He has very short little corgi legs and a larger sized body. He has great manners, he is a very submissive male. He loves EVERYONE!! He is very excitable and loves to run and play. He ran up to me and kissed me all over as soon as he saw me. He is also potty trained. Would make a great family pet or single person family very happy! I think he would be great for school aged children to play with!
Shaba + Calyle Have been living at boarding facility since February of this year.
These two came from the same owner and have been housed together the whole time that they have been living at the facility. A forever home that they could go to together is needed for these boys. They are both very beautiful and very loving. Shaba is VERY loving all he wants to to rub your legs and have you cuddle him. Cayle is a typical cat. He is affectionate, however he prefers his humans to give most of the affection while he just lays back and relaxes.

Calyle- Neutered Male Declawed Light grey Tabby 7 yrs old Described as shyer than his friend Shaba, but very sweet and loves attention
