Eat your carrots, they're good for your eyes," my mother used to
tell me. As a child, I didn't realize how true this statement was.

We all know proper nutrition and diet are key elements in
maintaining a healthy body. But did you know that certain
nutrients can actually reduce your likelihood of becoming
blind through eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and
macular degeneration?

Research also indicates that low levels of certain nutrients in
your body can affect your everyday visual clarity, especially
your night vision.

For example, whether she knew it or not, there was a reason your
mother used to pile those carrots on your plate. Carrots contain
a carotenoid called beta-carotene. Your body converts
beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is an anti-oxidant.
Anti-oxidants such as vitamin A are essential to eye health.

*Carotenoids are pigments in plants that provide red and yellow
*Beta-carotene is a carotenoid. It is contained in carrots and
other food sources. The body converts beta-carotene into vitamin
*Vitamin A is an anti-oxidant that is very important to the
 health of the eyes.
*An antioxidant is any substance that prevents or impedes cell
 oxidation (destruction) by free radicals.

Vitamin A:

  • helps your eyes adjust to light changes
  • moistens the eyes, which can enhance visual acuity
  • has been shown to prevent the forming of cataracts
  • has been shown to help prevent blindness from macular
  • degeneration-the leading cause of blindness in the world

Our monthly Protect Your Eyesight newsletter had an article last
February detailing all of the most up-to-date research on
supplementation for optimal vision health. The article discussed
three other key nutrients that many people don't know play a
crucial role in the prevention of vision loss and overall eye

You can learn all about these important nutrients inside the world-

Q: How does natural vision correction work?

A: The focusing abilities of your eyes are controlled by a
series of internal muscles. Due to the many stresses put
upon the visual system, the use of glasses and contacts,
and the natural aging process itself, these muscles become
weak and distorted, which causes blurred vision.

Q: How much time do I have to spend each day doing the
 eye exercises?

A: Only 25 minutes a day brings results

On many light colored dogs, especially miniature and toy breeds, we may see a brown or pink stain on the skin and hair below the inside corner of the eye. This is a common cosmetic problem caused by an overflow of tears onto the cheeks. The color change of the hair and skin occurs when the normal bacteria on the hair and skin react with the clear tears.

In normal animals, tears are constantly produced and drain out through small ducts in the eyelids. The ducts empty into the nose. (That is why your nose runs when you cry.) In animals with blocked ducts, the tears overflow the lids and run down the face.

There are several causes of the overflow of tears. Miniature breeds and Persians often have more prominent eyes. This stretches the eyelid and may cut off the drainage system. This is the most common cause and there is little we can do to correct it. Some animals are born with an abnormal drainage system that may or may not be surgically correctable. Sometimes, the eyelids turn inward and block the drainage. This is also surgically correctable.

Hair can act like a wick, drawing the tears out of the eye. This can be corrected by removing the offending hair. In some cases, tear overflow may be due to excessive tear formation caused by irritation of the eye by a particle of something in the eye, an allergy, or an abnormal eyelid or eyelash which turns inward and rubs against the surface of the eye.

Tearstains can be removed with cotton batting dipped in clean, boilded and cooled water, and you can also buy proprietary tearstain removers. Any clouding of the eye surface requires veterinary attention, since this is usually the result of injury of cataract formation.
