Fighting Against Fur

The truth is simple: Fur and fur trim kill.

Fur Free Retailer Program

With so many attractive and sensible alternatives available, fur is simply unnecessary. Even purchasing the tiniest bit of fur trim supports a cruel industry.

Every year, more than 50 million animals are violently killed in the name of "fashion." Some fall victim to barbaric traps. Others spend the entirety of their lives in grim conditions in fur farms across the globe before being slaughtered. Another source of fur is Canada's government-sanctioned seal slaughter, in which hundreds of thousands of seals, many just weeks old, are brutally killed. This is the reality that the fur industry wants so desperately to hide from the buying public.

You Can Help

With the help of compassionate consumers, API works to end the senseless suffering caused by the fur industry.

Since no market or product can profit without customers, API focuses its efforts in the fight against fur on consumer education — letting people know that the way they spend their money makes a difference in the lives of animals. We provide valuable educational materials about how to see through the fur industry's marketing ploys, how to determine if the fur on store shelves is real or faux, how to most effectively speak out against the fur trade, and how to gently educate others. We're also a major partner in an international coalition, the Fur Free Alliance, which gets the message out to countless consumers around the world that compassion is always in style.

Misleading Consumers

The fur industry works hard to mislead consumers about fur and fur trim. It fights against labeling laws that could help shoppers make informed decisions about what to buy. Its aggressive public relations efforts falsely claim that fur is a "fabric" and that fur trim is a "byproduct." The fur trade will say anything to persuade consumers to dissociate its product from the actual animals who die to create it.

Deceptive fur industry marketing has led to a surge in the popularity of fur trim, now commonly found on inexpensive clothing, accessories, and even toys, and to increased markets overseas.

But just because there is a small bit of "fluffy pink trim" on a jacket cuff or scarf tassel, doesn't mean it isn't the same grisly product of animal suffering and death. Designers who choose to use fur are relying on novel ways to incorporate fur into their clothing lines and designs. Fur is now being dyed bright colors, braided or beaded for a unique texture or exotic look, or clipped down to imitate the feel of velvet fabric.

Compassion Is Always in Fashion

Informed consumers will choose compassion and forego fur. More and more markets are embracing the ideology of ethical consumerism, as can be seen in the popularity of products ranging from hybrid cars to free trade coffee to sweat-shop free clothing and cosmetics and household products not tested on animals — all of which are experiencing measurable success. Fashion will follow suit as consumers refuse to buy apparel containing even the smallest bit of fur or fur trim.

The grim reality remains — fur kills animals. The fur trade may work hard to peddle its wares. But API will work even harder to shine a spotlight on the practices of this cruel industry and to spread the word that there's simply no excuse for wearing fur. We're helping consumers use the unique power that only they have — the power to close down a cruel and unnecessary industry.

Compassion is always in fashion. Choosing to not wear fur or fur trim is simple — and saves animals' lives.

Here are some fascinating facts about lobsters. Please read them, consider them, and check out the 'Save Lives' page to see what you can do to help save sea life.

* Crabs and lobsters have complex nervous systems, almost a miniature version of the human system, which allow them to feel pain.

* Lobsters have nine brains throughout their body. If one is destroyed, it causes unimaginable pain to the lobster.

* When you or I are seriously hurt, our body tries to numb the pain by shutting down - lobsters feel everything that is happening to them. They do however produced mild anesthesia when hurt - proof that they feel pain.

* Lobsters have a fascinating ability to explore their surroundings, communicate and establish social relationships.

* Lobsters have highly developed senses of smell and taste - they are able to 'smell' chemicals in the water with their antennae, and taste with sensory hairs along their legs.

* If they can avoid capture, lobsters can live for over 100 years.

* Lobsters, like humans, have long childhoods, and an awkward adolescence.

* It is believed that lobsters can be either left or right handed.

* Fish and shellfish often accumulate extremely high levels of toxins in their flesh (as much as 9 million times that of the water in which they live) such as PCB’s, dioxins, mercury, lead, and arsenic, which can cause health problems ranging from kidney damage and impaired mental development to cancer, paralytic shellfish poisoning and even death.

* During killing, the lobsters are often plunged into boiling water, or are gradually heated. For some dishes they are cut up, or even grilled whilst still conscious. Lobster mousse is made by scrapping the flesh from the shell whilse the animal is still alive!

* When boiled, lobsters are often observed whipping their tails and attempting to claw their way from the pot. It can take 15 seconds, to 7 minutes for lobsters to die when boiled.

Diagnosis

What is Suicide Food? Suicide Food is any depiction of animals that act as though they wish to be consumed. Suicide Food actively participates in or celebrates its own demise. Suicide Food identifies with the oppressor. Suicide Food is a bellwether of our decadent society. Suicide Food says, “Hey! Come on! Eating meat is without any ethical ramifications! See, Mr. Greenjeans? The animals aren’t complaining! So what's your problem?” Suicide Food is not funny.

Star's alligator antics
enrage animal group
By Karen Bale

POP princess Beyonce has come under fire from animal rights activists - for upsetting alligators during a bizarre photo shoot. They called her "abusive" after she was pictured holding a baby alligator with its mouth taped. The 24-year-old Destiny's Child singer had the shots taken for the cover of her new solo album B'day.Another picture showed her wearing high heels and a bikini, while holding two alligators on leashes. But high profile animal activists PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - objected after she confessed during a recent interviewthat taping the baby alligator's mouth was "my bright idea".

She added: "He was really cute, but since his mouth was taped, he didn't have any way to defend himself."He was upset, so he peed on me. That was an experience."

On behalf of PETA, Clifford Warwick, a specialist on reptile welfare,
wrote her a letter which read: "Humans and alligators are not natural
bedfellows, and the two should not mix at events such as photo shoots.
"In my view, doing so is arguably abusive to an animal."He added that taping the little reptile's mouth shut left it defenceless, adding to its distress.Warwick
said: "Animals won't be held in their predators' arms for protracted
periods of time while being stripped of all defences."And he insisted alligators felt pain and stress in the same way as humans. It is not the first time PETA have attacked the singer. In
June, members of the group confronted Beyonce and her mum at a fancy
New York restaurant over the singer's use of fur in her fashion lines.

Earlier this year, they targeted the makers of Penelope Cruz's new film about a notorious Spanish bullfighter. And Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria was rebuked for boasting about her hunting skills to Oprah Winfrey.

PLEASE NOTE IT HERE

and...

There is a poll here

-----
I will never undestand why these celebrities feel
the need to prove themselves and establish their status
through lack of compassion for other creatures.

Taping a baby alligator's mouth and bragging about
that bright idea? Using animals as decor for photo shoots?
what is wrong with people?

When will wearing dead animals stop being a sign of wealth
and people will understand that it's a sign of complete inhumanity???

“Power to act is duty to act.”—Peter Kropotkin, Anarchist Morality

One common critique of veganism that I hear (usually, from my leftist comrades) is that it is just a practice of consumption. In other words, as vegans, we keep the idea alive that consumption is what matters most in society. And yes, I know, were we all to stop eating animals, animal agriculture would disappear, and along with it, 90+% of the exploitation of animals that goes on in the world.

Nevertheless, I think these critics are on to something. If veganism only means that you will or will not consume certain things, then you’re essentially arguing from a consumerist standpoint, that voting with your dollars (or euros, or yen, or whatever) matters most. Granted, voting with your dollars does matter, but it isn’t the kind of voting that’s going to bring down animal agriculture anytime soon. Sadly, our tiny boycott of animal industries alone is insufficient to make any noticable dent in animal suffering, which is why I think that veganism alone just isn’t enough, and also why I think that the critics who levy this argument are on to something.

As vegans, I think we have a duty not just to avoid products of cruelty, but also to educate and to be activists in our lives. The movement against animal suffering is broad and deep, and I guarantee you that there’s a place in it for you and your talents. Your boycott of animal products should be coupled with some kind of activism, outreach, or support in some way that you’re comfortable with. If you’re a musician, make music that educates. If you’re a teacher, teach about these issues. If you’re a geek, help maintain a server that does vegan outreach or support. If you’re an artist, make art to raise consciousness. Harness your talents in a way that is comfortable to you so that we can begin to chip away at this massive monolith of cruelty. None of this necessarily means that you should throw red paint on fur hags, (as tempting as that may be) or chain yourself to the doors of a slaughterhouse; it is only a reminder that we have the power to act, and if we believe Kropotkin, it is the duty to act as well.

“Anger is an energy!”—John Lydon, Rise by PIL

An additional point worth emphasizing is that actually getting out and doing something helps fight off some of the feelings of helplessness, frustration, anger, and dread that accompany your understanding of speciesism in our society. It isn’t that actually doing things makes those feelings go away—it just helps to redirect some of that anger, upset, or frustration into a productive end, rather than inward.

A final note: it isn’t that I think vegans are lazy. Look around: we’re doing all kinds of great work. But that’s only a smallish percentage of us. I guess the question that I’m hoping to get you to ask yourself if you’re not one of the more active folks is, “what are my talents, and how can I use them to fight animal exploitation?”
