Everybody needs a home -- especially grizzly bears and other wildlife that depend on habitat in our National Forests to survive.

But a proposal introduced in August by the Bush/Cheney Administration would dismantle vital protections for our National Forests and grasslands and eliminate key federal protections for all wildlife in those areas including the still-struggling grizzly bear.

We have just a short time to stop this awful plan. Send a message to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service right now, and urge federal officials to abandon their latest regulatory assault on the National Forest Management Act.

Please visit this page, read & take action!

NOISES and STRANGE STRANGERS:
Trick or treaters can cause loud and excessive noise and frighten your pet, so try to keep your pets inside in a quiet room where they are insulated from the Halloween rukus. : )

Pets, especially dogs, that are easily excitable or threatened by strangers should be kept from the front door so they cannot bite anyone or run into the street. With many people visiting the home in strange attire, even normally calm pets might overreact.

Keep pets on a shorter-than-normal leash if you plan on walking outside on Halloween. Again, scary and weird looking trick-or-treaters could provoke aggression in even the nicest pet.

KISS OF DEATH
Candy, especially chocolate, is toxic for animals and can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart disturbances, and even death. Ask kids not to share candy with pets.

CANDLES
Be careful with lit pumpkins and candles because pets can knock them over and start a fire. Therefore ensure that all burning objects are out of pet's reach. Remember that cats can jump high, and birds can fly, so try to confine a pet if it demonstrates an "unhealthy" interest in flames (e.g. it puts its paws in lit pumpkins or tries to play with candles).

PETS IN DISGUISE
Avoid costumes held in place by rubber bands, which can be uncomfortable and, more important, rubber bands mistakenly left on a pet can quickly burrow into the animal's skin and cause injury. Additionally, rubber bands in the wrong place can choke a bird.

If a pet wears a costume, make sure it is not constricting, causing your pet to trip, or blocking its vision. Do not force a pet to wear a costume if it demonstrates discomfort. All of the above can cause undue stress and possibly cause aggression in even the nicest dog, goldfish, or iguana.

EVIL IN THE NIGHT
Don't leave pets outside on Halloween. Many animals disappear as pranksters and those with darker intentions tease, abduct, torture, or even kill pets.

Be especially watchful of black cats, who which are frequent targets of cruel activities on Halloween. Try to keep black cats inside for the week of Halloween. Many animal shelters make black cats unavailable for adoption the week before Halloween because of black cat abuse.

Category: Main Courses
Cuisine: Thai
Prep Time: Less than 1 hr
INGREDIENTS

2 garlic cloves, mashed
1 tablespoon peeled and minced fresh ginger
1 tablespoon tahini (sesame paste)
1/2 cup tamari or other soy sauce
1/3 cup toasted sesame oil
1 tablespoon firmly packed light brown sugar
3 tablespoons sake or dry white wine
4 Portobello mushroom caps
1 tablespoon peanut oil

In a small bowl, combine the garlic, ginger, and tahini. Stir in the tamari, sesame oil, brown sugar, and sake, blending well.

Place the mushroom caps in a shallow bowl. Add the marinade, turning to coat the mushrooms, and let stand for 15 to 30 minutes, turning once.

Heat the peanut oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms (reserve the marinade) and sear, turning once, until well browned and slightly softened, about 5 minutes.

Cut each mushroom on a slight angle into 1/4-inch thick slices. Place a serving of hot mashed potatoes on each of four dinner plates. Fan out the mushroom slices over the potatoes.

Meanwhile, heat the reserved marinade in a small saucepan. Drizzle a little of it around the edges of each plate and serve hot.

If I disappear from Care 2 it is because someone doesn't like my screen name and my picture. I have gone through hell trying to get back my old profile after the hassle of care2 having me create a new profile which I also had to create a new email for.

I am hoping they will let me keep my old one, but I am holding off on deleting my newer one to see how much more censorship I have to endure on the one I've had (this one) since early in '05 .

Here is my new profile - http://www.care2.com/c2c/people/profile.html?pid=869880248

Just in case in the next 24 hours this one is gone again. I am going to keep the new one alive for a few days until I see what care2 says about the issues at hand.

It would be great if you'd ad me as fiends under the new one just in scae they take this one back again!

Through a firefighters Eyes -
-

When Good Men Cry

Have you ever looked into a Fireman's eyes and seen the pain?
Have you heard the compassion in his voice?
This is a man who, like you, cherishes his family and home.
It is his calling and his instinct to risk it all to save others.
So when you see them pass, say a prayer for them, as they are on
their way to one of many battles in the ongoing war of "Life & Death."
Each battle is met with honor hoping that fate will be kind and not
ask of him the supreme Sacrifice!!
So do not be surprised when you see a child hurt, or a loved one lost,
a home destroyed or a hero buried, to see... good men cry !!

by a Fire Cheif

To Those who Lost Their Lives at the Pentagon

Broken Hearts

If from their graves they could stop your tears.
They would tell you that they faced their death with out any fears.
Here lies the heros of our great nation.
They came from all walks of life and from every fire station.
They were brothers they were fathers, they were some mother's son.
They were firefighters first and would help anyone.
The bell would ring and they would always respond.
You could always depend on them to answer the alarm.
They gave up their bodies and they gave up their minds.
Everyone knows that firefighters are one of a kind.
So here they lie from their families they are parted.
The familes the brothers will always be broken hearted.

--I ask that people everywhere pray for those Hero's who died and who lived--

Firefighter's Prayer

God, please bless these souls,
of those in such harm,
laying their lives,
when they hear the alarm.

Protect them when they,
go into the blaze,
keep them in peace,
out of the haze.

We're here to protect,
and save for your will,
thanks to you Lord,
the emptyness you fill.

Giving us strength,
and power to live,
in times of such danger,
letting us give.

We give all we can,
throughout the daze,
living the life,
of a Firemans haze.

We fight for you,
the one that gives life,
protecting the weak,
with all of our might.

We ask in you Lord,
Savior of man,
lead us to truth,
to do all that we can.

May Jesus protect us,
through all of our tears,
through all of the pain,
through all of our years.

What is GRIT?

GRIT is a multi-agency, multi-discipline team charged with coordinating the suppression, intervention, prevention and overall reduction of street gang activity within Loudoun County. By utilizing the expertise of the associated agencies, the team will identify at risk youth, gang members, and gang activity. The GRIT coordinates, develops and supports services to at risk youth, their families and communities. The GRIT is actively involved with the Northern Virginia Gang Task Force's Prevention, Intervention and Education initiatives.

Loudoun County government agencies that are members of the team include the Commonwealth's Attorney, the Community Corrections Program, County Administrator's Office, Family Services, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Service Unit, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Sheriff's Office, and Loudoun Youth Initiative. Other member agencies are the Leesburg Police Department, the Leesburg Department of Parks and Recreation, Loudoun Public Schools and the local Adult Probation and Parole District of the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The GRIT provides information on gang intervention and prevention programs and services. The GRIT is also the point of contact for community-based educational programming, gang awareness presentations, and seminars.

On this page, you'll find links to more information about the team, including contact information and background on how it came to be formed, plus tips for what parents, business owners and other members of the community can do to help prevent gang activity.

What You Can Do

Signs of Gang Activity
First, it's helpful to know the signs of gang membership and activity. They include:

  • Common dress/colors within a group

  • Graffiti and graffiti-type artwork in notebooks or on walls

  • Common tattoos within a group

  • Use of hand signs

  • Refers to friends as "family"

What Community Members Can Do
  • Refrain from the use of specific gang names, as it aids in gang recruitment

  • Become involved in community organizations and coalitions that promote positive activities for youth

  • Be a positive role model for youth

  • Maintain a working relationship with community policing officers and aid in establishing programs such as Neighborhood Watch

What Parents Can Do
  • Educate yourself on signs of activity

  • Talk to your kids about gangs

  • Be involved in their lives

  • Get to know their friends and where they go

  • Pay attention to behavioral changes such as the way they dress, change in grades, changes in school attendance and the company they keep

  • Pay attention to the music they are listening to, the web sites/chat rooms they are visiting and the type of art/posters in their room

What the Business Community Can Do
  • Remove graffiti as soon as possible so it is no longer visible

  • Report any possible gang activity/graffiti to law enforcement

  • Enforce “No Trespass/Barment” notices

  • If you have a surveillance system, ensure that it functions properly and is recording

  • Correct outside lighting problems

  • Start and/or enforce a “no gang colors” policy in your establishment

California

July 27  -

Richmond police and federal agents hope they've crippled local factions of a notorious international street gang that stretches from Central America to many parts of the United States.

Dozens of agents with the immigration and customs enforcement, FBI and Richmond police raided several locations early Thursday morning in Richmond. It shocked residents in the normally quiet neighborhood.

Oliver Bradley, neighbor: "There's no crime here & very nice neighborhood. Everyone here leaves their doors unlocked, so it's a real close knit neighborhood, so to see something like that, it's very, very different."

Their targets were more than half a dozen leaders in the notorious international gang Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, as well as a local street gang called Richmond Sur Tres.

Graffiti illustrates just part of the ongoing rivalry that's erupted in serious violence in the past year.
Lt. Mark Gagan, Richmond police department: "These gangs are primarily Latino street gangs who have been responsible for many of the robberies, carjackings, shootings and even murders here in Richmond and in other parts of the Bay Area."

MS-13 has become a major concern for law enforcement in recent years. Starting as former military in el Salvador, the group has turned into a brutal street gang and spread throughout Texas, the East Coast and California. MS-13 has been responsible for a string of crimes ranging from drug dealing, and gun running, to extortion, rape and murder.

These Salvadoran immigrants are familiar with the name and reputation.

"They never do nothing to me or to my family, but I just hear the news what the people say what they're doing you know."

"Not on this area, but more down on 23rd, everybody knows them. And in San Francisco, that's where they're more known at, not on this area."

Lt. Mark Gagan, Richmond police department: "In this case, we were unaware that these kingpins were living in our city. Their crimes were throughout the Bay Area, and not particularly in Richmond. So it's a benefit for us to have such a good working relationship with the federal agencies."

Thirty-two-year old Jose Santos Bonilla was arrested. Several weapons were seized at his house. He's being held on immigration violations, but could face other charges.

Lt. Mark Gagan, Richmond police department: "His arrest will destabilize that gang. One thing we need to identify is when you arrest gang members you cause instability."

They just want to make sure no one else steps up. A few other people were taken into custody for questioning, but several other suspects remain at large.
