Who is afraid of PETA?

“Ella! Ella!” This isn't a spanish appearing song Madonna's but the nimble dog lady Ella merrily sniffing herself the way through the office of the animal rights organization PETA (People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals) in Los Angeles. She can hardly save herself by the stroking attacks of the PETA-employees. But then however she must run further, quickly up to the housetop terrace. Which dog already enjoys this view and the privilege to go for work every day with mistress? The Youtube-video "An Inside view of PETA's Office, With Ella" is a sunny ray of hope among the many video posts disclosing only sad truths about animals and their pains. "Surely one of the worldwide safest places for a dog!" comments a Youtube-member. All the more shocking it should be for people investigating in web search engines under the keyword of the animal rights organization and very fast come across PETAKillsAnimals.com. Simply and disillusioning.
In provocative PR campaigns the animal rights organization and her opponents are at least taking second place themselves into nothing. With the "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" Campaign VIPs like Alicia Silverstone, Elisabetta Canalis, Eva Mendes or Joanna Krupa were modeling for PETA actions to draw one's attention to the cruel practice of the animal skinning. No naked facts want to attract attention from billboards on Sunset Strip  and New York`s Times Square but one in broad characters alerting "PETAKillsAnimals"-print. With a petition the Internet presence calls up to reclassify PETA's only operating animal shelter in Norfolk, in the U. S. federal state Virginia "as a slaughterhouse" and to "Put Down PETA". The meanwhile 74.700 follower on facebook counting online platform is rolling up a criminal procedure already closed in 2007. Two PETA employees were indicted in some counts of animal cruelty, of obtaining property under false pretenses and littering because of dumping the animal carcasses in a dumpster. All charges in the proceeding except the one of littering were dropped. According to the page PETA has killed 96 percent of its adoptable dogs and cats during 2011. Only 24 of 1.992 animals were adopted and 34 passed on to other facilities. The published original documents are demonstrating an increasing trend PETA's euthanasia program since 1998. This transgression could hardly be more ironical if an animal should have a chance of only six percent to survive the next 24 hours like the website is calculating.

Is PETA USA suffering from reality loss? Is that the propagated "total liberation of animals"? Of the world's largest and more than three million counting members animal rights organization is expected much but not that. Truth or bluff? PETA doesn't fill any faults, confesses publicly to euthanize exclusively ill and not communicable animals in Virginia in humane way which otherwise had found a cruel death. The high euthanasia rate in the USA "is due to the total population and density. In Los Angeles for example are killed around 30,000 animals per week" says Harald Ullmann, second PETA-chairman. In Germany fortunately there wouldn't be  such an overpopulation of dogs and cats like it is the case in the USA, explains Ullmann. Perpetrators of this over-population would be the cultivators and operators of Puppy Mills who continually rear young dogs and cats again and again to make profit out of it.

CCF - The aggressive consumption advocates

PETA in real not as hypocritical as PETAKillsAnimals wants to suggest? Could lie a clever move of the meat industry behind all this according to the motto "war to the vegetarians and the californian Eat-healthy-lifestyle"? Fact is, the home page operator, the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) residenting in Washington, D. C. primarily provides uncertainty under animal rights activists. A less cursory glance behind the curtain of the non-profit-organization CCF is very revealing. For the lobbyist of the tabacco-, alcohol and junkfood-industry the profit stands in focus.
According to public Whistleblower documents the CCF (former: Guest  Choice Network) shall have received donations of altogether $2,950,000 of the tobacco giant Philip Morris since his foundation. In the bitter fight for self-determination of the fun- and consumption-oriented consumer the CCF is i. a. sponsored by hotel- and restaurant chains as well as various enterprises named Pilgrim's Pride Corporation, Tyson Foods, Inc. and the Coca-Cola Company. Notwithstanding the fact that the U. S. industry nation shows an outstandingly high percentage of more overweightly, the CCF and his sponsors seem willing  to keep this thoroughly profitable negative trend. Richard Berman, director of the behind the CCF standing PR agency Berman & Company confesses completely unembarrassed, goal would be to discredit publicly the authenticity of certain organizations. Offensive strategy would be to shoot the messenger. If activist plans gave cause for alerting alarm, then the credibility of their speakers must be attacked. Provoked "Image-damage" would be a suitable synonymous. PETA is also aim of this war declaration – protection of animals and meat industry hardly go together.  Part of the preferential attacked organizations are those who are warning based on scientific studies of the health risks of smoking, pesticide contaminated food and specific food consumption. Numerous health authorities, consumer protection organizations, anti-alcohol and anti-animal experiment  campaigns are on the no-go list of the self-professed consumption advocates (i.a.: Alliance of American Insurers, American Medical Association, Center for Food Safety, Center for Media  & Democracy, Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD), Humane Society of the United States). The CCF also pushes web pages like AnimalScam.com which warns of radical animal righst campaigners; FishScam.com which plays down the dangers of mercury in fish also for pregnant women; ObesityMyths.com which clears up with the alleged prejudices of health risky obesity; or ActivistCash.com which publishes the sponsors of anti consumption activists while the CCF itself is not obliged to diclose his. While consumer organizations are simply declared as „food policy“, promi-lobbyist Berman describes the suggestion of the former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani to confiscate cars of sentenced because of drunk driving, mediately as „car theft“. The high art of disinformation could hardly be operated more misleadingly. PETAkillsAnimals at  the final count is probably nothing more and nothing less than a cunning PR campaign of the meat- and tobacco-industry – this also in the name of animal welfare.

PETA the scapegoat?

And PETA? In free castration programs is tried to manage the overpopulation of animals. So already over 61,000 animals could be castrated in mobile clinical complexes of PETA USA since 2001. This primarily pays off in the poorer areas of North Carolina with the highest euthanasia rate of the USA. Before PETA intervened, disastrous conditions were dominating in the local animal shelter. Numerous cases of cruelty to animals, untrained staff  and hygienical unreasonable conditions induced the animal rights activists to step in and to bear the costs alone. Though for many dogs every help came too late. The animal rights activists delivered Santana who had such heavy face injuries that his jaw hung pulled out down, or a dog sufferering from an advanced cancer  so that his brain already came to surface.
Ingrid Newkirk, PETA-chairwoman can not understand "how anyone cannot recognize that there is a world of difference between painlessly euthanizing animals out of compassion — aged, injured, sick, and dying animals [...] and causing them to suffer terror, pain, and a prolonged death while struggling to survive on the streets, at the hands of untrained and uncaring ‘technicians’ or animal abusers." Therefore she made it to her mission to put these kind of animals to sleep in a human way with the painless injection of Natrium Pentobarbital, dogs and cats who otherwise would end in the gas chamber. This may sound hypocritical and seems paradoxical, but it is more dignified then being gasified or shoot starving, ill, neglected and forced by a competenceless sanctuary attendant in North Carolina. And while PETA furthermore is playing the scapegoat, a billboard dazzles among the amusing mile on Sunset Strip, innocent between steak houses, bar chains and boutiques in the sun: PETAKillsAnimals – what a SCANDAL!

“Ella! Ella!” Das ist nicht etwa ein spanisch anmutender Song Madonnas, sondern die flinke Hundedame Ella, die sich fröhlich schnuppernd ihren Weg durch das Büro der Tierrechtsorganisation PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in Los Angeles bahnt. Dabei kann sie sich vor Streichelattacken der PETA-Mitarbeiter kaum retten. Dann aber muss sie rasch weiter, hoch zur Dachterrasse rennen. Welcher Hund genießt schon diese Aussicht und das Privileg, jeden Morgen mit Frauchen zur Arbeit zu dürfen? Das Youtube-Video “An Inside View of PETA's Office, With Ella” ist ein sonniger Lichtblick unter den vielen Video-Posts, die nur traurige Wahrheiten über Tiere und deren Qualen offenlegen. Dies sei sicherlich einer der weltweit sichersten Orte für einen Hund, kommentiert ein Youtube-Mitglied. Umso schockierender ist es da für Interessierte, die in Web-Suchmaschinen unter dem Stichwort der Tierrechtsorganisation recherchieren und sehr schnell auf “PETAKillsAnimals.com” stoßen. “PETA tötet Tiere” heißt es da schlicht und desillusionierend.
In provokanten PR-Kampagnen zumindest stehen sich die Tierrechtsorganisation und ihre Gegner in nichts nach. “Lieber nackt als im Pelz” modelten Promis wie Alicia Silverstone, Elisabetta Canalis, Eva Mendes oder Joanna Krupa für PETA-Aktionen, um auf die grausame Praxis der Tierhäutung aufmerksam zu machen. Doch keine nackten Tatsachen wollen von Plakaten am Sunset Strip und New York`s Times Square die Blicke auf sich ziehen, sondern ein in breiten Lettern alarmierender „PETAKillsAnimals“-Print. Mit einer Petition ruft die Internetpräsenz dazu auf, das in Norfolk, im US-Bundesstaat Virginia betriebene und einzige Tierheim PETA`s „als Schlachthof neu zu klassifizieren“ und PETA „auszuschalten“. Die mittlerweile 74.700 follower bei facebook zählende Onlineplattform rollt ein bereits im Jahr 2007 abgeschlossenes Strafverfahren auf, in dem zwei PETA-Mitarbeiter in mehreren Fällen wegen Tierquälerei, der Aneignung von Eigentum unter falschem Vorwand und unlauterer Müllentsorgung angeklagt wurden, da sie Tierkadaver illegal in einen Abfallcontainer warfen. Alle Anklagen innerhalb dieses Verfahrens, bis auf die unsachgemäßer Müllentsorgung wurden fallen gelassen. Jedoch soll die „berüchtigte Tierschutzorganisation“ im Jahr 2011 nahezu 96 Prozent ihrer Tiere, darunter Hunde und Katzen eingeschläfert haben. Von 1.992 Tieren wurden nur 24 adoptiert und 34 an andere Einrichtungen weitergeleitet. Die von der Webseite veröffentlichten Originaldokumente demonstrieren einen ansteigenden Trend PETA`s Euthanasie-Programms seit 1998. Steckt gar ein raffinierter Schachzug der US-amerikanischen Genuss- und Ernährungsmittelindustrie dahinter, nach dem Motto „Krieg den Vegetariern und dem kalifornischen „Ernähre-Dich-gesund-Lifestyle“? Tatsache ist, der in Washington, D.C. ansässige Homepagebetreiber, das Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), Zentrum für Verbraucherfreiheit, sorgt unter Tierschützern vor allem für Verunsicherung. Ein weniger oberflächlicher Blick hinter die Kulissen des CCF lässt wahrlich tief blicken, denn der Non-Profit-Organisation geht es als Interessenvertreter der Tabak-, Alkohol- und Junkfood-Industrie gerade darum – Profit. So geht aus öffentlichen Whistleblower-Dokumenten eine Summe von insgesamt 2,950,000 USD hervor, welche das CCF (vormals: Guest Choice Network) seit seiner Gründung vom Tabak-Giganten Philip Morris erhalten haben soll. Offensive Strategie sei es, den messenger zu erschießen. Gäben Aktivisten-Pläne Grund zu alarmierender Beunruhigung, so müsse die Glaubwürdigkeit ihrer Sprecher angegriffen werden. Provozierter „Imageschaden“ wäre ein passendes Synonym. Zu den Adressaten seiner Kampfansage gehört auch PETA – Tierschutz und Fleischindustrie  passen eben schwer zusammen. Attackiert werden bevorzugt Organisationen, die basierend auf wissenschaftlichen Studien über die Gesundheitsrisiken des Rauchens, Pestizidverseuchter Lebensmittel und spezifischen Nahrungsmittelkonsums warnen. Während Verbraucherorganisationen schlicht als „Food police“ deklariert  werden, bezeichnete Promi-Lobbyist Berman den Vorschlag des ehemaligen New Yorker Bürgermeisters Rudy Giuliani, Autos von Verurteilten wegen Trunkenheit am Steuer zu konfiszieren, schlicht als „Autodiebstahl“. Die hohe Kunst der Desinformation könnte kaum irreführender betrieben werden. Unterm Strich ist PETAkillsAnimals wohl nicht mehr und nicht weniger als eine raffinierte PR-Kampagne der Fleisch- und Tabak-Industrie – im Namen des Tierschutzes.

PETA, der Sündenbock?

Und PETA? In kostenlosen Kastrationsprogrammen wird versucht, die Überpopulation an Tieren einzudämmen. So konnten seit 2001 bereits über 61.000 Tiere in mobilen Kliniken von PETA USA kastriert werden. Dies zahlt sich vor allem in den ärmeren Gegenden von North Carolina mit den höchsten Euthanasie-Raten der USA aus. Bervor PETA einschritt, herrschten in den dort ansässigen Tierheimen katastrophale Zustände. Zahlreiche Fälle von Tierquälerei, ungeschultem Tierschutzpersonal und hygienisch unzumutbaren Bedingungen veranlassten   die Tierrechtler einzugreifen und die Kosten allein zu tragen. Für viele Hunde allerdings kam jede Hilfe zu spät. So erlöste die Tierschützer beispielsweise Santana, der so schwere Gesichtsverletzungen gehabt haben soll, dass sein Kiefer ausgerissen nur noch herunter hing, oder einen Hund, der unter fortgeschrittenem Krebs litt, wodurch sein Gehirn zum Vorschein trat.

Das mag heuchlerisch klingen und paradox erscheinen, ist aber würdevoller als von einem kompetenzlosen Tierheimwärter in North Carolina krank, verwahrlost, ausgehungert und gequält erschossen oder vergast zu werden. Und während PETA weiterhin den Sündenbock spielt, blendet inmitten der Amüsiermeile am Sunset-Boulevard, unschuldig zwischen Steakhäusern, Barketten und Boutiquen ein Plakat in der Sonne: PETAKillsAnimals – welch ein SKANDAL!
