One will not attain Virtues and enjoy the accompanying Principles without meditation. A simple definition will not suffice in bringing about the surrender necessary to acquire a Virtue. At first glance, one will assume that he already knows about Humility. However, we will see that Humility contains much more than a simple definition of meekness. Humility is a powerful weapon in overcoming the primal nature and controlling the course of one's destiny.

Many view humility as the absence of Pride or the appearance of meekness. Humility is the ability to embrace simplicity. Simplicity, by its definition cannot be a Virtue. It is an attribute. Many people, places and things may possess the attribute of simplicity. However, one must surrender to the Virtue Humility in order to embrace a lifestyle of simplicity. A Humble lifestyle is a very powerful one indeed.

Today, many are returning to the simplicity of organic foods and products. Man's technology and complications have succeeded in many ways in ruining our health and destroying nutrition. Lifestyles have become complicated as a result of technology, divorce, blended families and gadgets. The result of this technology has been further distancing rather than greater bonding. The nutritional value of our food has deteriorated to the point that supplements are practically a requirement, especially in later years.

Humility searches out the Truth. It desires the authentic. It will not settle for a cheap substitute and its motives are always to embrace Truth. Humility does not surround itself with the latest gadgets. It is repulsed by Pretention. It cannot abide the empty, hollow deadness of flattery, adulation, narcississm and egotism. In fact, this is the power of humility. It cannot be bribed. No appeal to vainglory, fame or fortune can sway humility from its quest for truth and authenticity. It can live among the poorest of the poor in cities like Calcutta, yet look the President of the United States in the eye and say "If you don't want your children, give them to me", as did Mother Teresa to Bill Clinton. Should notoriety come to Humility as it did to Mother Teresa, it will recognize the fleeting nature of it and pay it little heed. It will not be veered from its course.

Humility enjoys the best of the best. It abides with Success and Prosperity. These Principles have nothing to do with the acquisition of material things. Rather, they are comprised of Virtues, Laws and outcomes pertaining to Joy, Peace and things that endure. Humility recognizes the value of the natural, the authentic, the perfected. It will settle for no other. Humility dares not to exalt itself above Principles and other Virtues. It displays deference and respect and bows to Wisdom and Truth, for it is in this realm it abides.

Humility is a key Virtue in the path to Serenity, for it is required in order to recognize true value and to remain on course in the face of temptations toward complexity and glitter.

serene river sceneIn order to know Serenity, one must first understand that Serenity is a state of being, a place if you will. Obviously it is not a physical location; however, it is a realm. In this realm abide other positive principles such as joy, health, prosperity, success, life and peace. It is a spiritual realm which exists on a plane above our common daily routines and patterns. Nonetheless, it is as real as the chair you are sitting in.

How do we know that Serenity is a place? Mainly because we arrive there from time to time. This usually happens at times when we are thrust into spiritual consciousness by circumstances or events. The major illness or death of a loved one can cause one to begin thinking about the higher purpose of life, or a greater appreciation of things taken for granted. One's family is the most important driving force for most individuals; however, often days go by before one actually takes the time to consciously think about his family members. Serenity is the ultimate positive energy. It is what is truly valuable, most precious.

In the realm of Serenity abide other Positive Principles and virtues. Love, acceptance, Truth all abide in the same realm with Serenity. Integrity is also in this realm. In fact, Integrity cannot be found in the negative realm because negativity includes brokenness by definition. The first thing one notices about Serenity is its value. One must value and desire Serenity in order to possess it. However, it cannot be attained by force or by manipulation. This is because Serenity is found with other positive qualities such as peace, patience, truth, forgiveness and diligence. Force, manipulation, greed, malice, insecurity and selfish gratification do not live in the same realm as Serenity; therefore, cannot be used in attaining it.

Serenity is like a butterfly. The harder one chases it in order to catch it, the more elusive it becomes. However, if one sits still and waits it is more likely to land on one's shoulder. Often times, energy expended in trying to remain sober from chemical substances is used by addiction against the recovering addict. Serenity cannot be attained by figuring out a formula or answering some perplexing question. Serenity must be attained through acceptance of truth and surrender to positive principles and virtues.

Just as the Martial Arts emphasize meditation and self control, these are also necessary in the practice of Serenity. Serenity acts in opposition to our base, primal human nature. Wisdom, patience, consideration and diligence all accompany Serenity. Our animalistic nature is just the opposite of these qualities. This nature will lead us into poverty, failure and destruction. Serenity is simplistic in nature. In order to obtain it, we must value a simple, healthy lifestyle and not allow ourselves to be given over to our covetous, materialistic primal nature.

At first glance this Virtue may appear to be a process, one must certainly go through a process in order to obtain this Virtue. One may never fully obtain, or completely master this Virtue during the course of a lifetime. Acceptance, like patience often requires momentary surrender by virtue of the need for its application. In the process of recovery, this Virtue precedes Courage and the process of change. How does one know when to accept and when to change? Perhaps more experience with Acceptance will help answer this question.

One must think of Virtues as components which exist in their respective realms, Positive or Negative. These are smaller components which, together, comprise Principles. Principles are states which consist of laws and outcomes. In order to abide in a state of Joy, one must surrender to the Virtues of Acceptance, Diligence, Appreciation, Gratitude, Harmony and more. Because these Virtues exist naturally in the realm of Positive Energy, often meditation on one Virtue will facilitate the appearance of other Virtues as well. Remember, this is not an intellectual exercise. One is not required to "learn" about Joy in order to experience it.

Acceptance is a powerful Virtue. The problem one experiences when attempting to embrace a new Virtue is definition. Often we think we know something about a Virtue because of our association with language. Thus the need for meditation. We think of Acceptance as toleration, acquiesence, Surrender, "giving in". In reality, Acceptance is the path to change. As revealed in the study of Grief, Acceptance is the final stage prior to recovery or the last stage of Grief. Acceptance diffuses the struggle in our minds to try to "control" a situation, person or circumstance. When we attempt to force change, we generate a large amount of Negative Energy and often give in to Negative Vices and Principles. These reduce our ability to move forward and achieve Success. Think about Grief for example, during this process one is forced to accept highly unpleasant circumstances. The initial, primal response is resistance. The mind cannot comprehend the reality and goes into overload. When one finally arrives at the point of Acceptance, even though the circumstances have not changed, Hope and Peace appear.

When faced with a difficulty, challenge, disappointment or difficult choice, the question to ask is not "What must I do?" Rather, one must surrender to the Virtue Acceptance. The mind rebels at this. This results from Fear and the desire to Control. These Negative Vices attempt to keep the situation in the realm of Negativity. Also, Negative Energy is often generated by the circumstances requiring change or creating diffuculty. As a result, the Negative Energy is working on you and your attempts to conrol the situation only feed it further. Acceptance diffuses this Negative Energy. Any resulting change which takes place will require Wisdom, Diligence, Patience and other Positive Virtues. These Positive Virtues cannot be attained without first entering through the door of Acceptance. The grappling of the mind in order to control a situation is the predictable response which allows Negative Energy to pull us further into its destructive realm.

Acceptance is not passivity or "giving up". If one is experiencing an injustice, the injustice needs to be stopped. This will require much Courage. Acceptance involves embracing that the situation is actually occuring. Often our minds cannot deal with the cognitive dissonance generated by an event. Cognitive dissonence is the inability to "add up" what is happening with what we believe. A woman trapped in an abusive relationship must get out. The reason she cannot is because she is not accepting every part of her condition and the necessary action she is required to take. She must first accept the reality that this is actually happening. She must also accept that her actions must change. Her thoughts, habit patterns and fears will all work against her as she attempts to do this. This is why Acceptance must enter throught the Soul and not the Mind.

In the famous Serenity Prayer, it is no accident that Acceptance comes before Courage. Effective change takes place after acceptance. Negative Energy would argue with this and insist that change comes through force. While it may be true that force will be required to produce change, the Principle in operation at the time of the change will determine the amount of healing or damage that takes place in the process. We may achieve the desired outcome in rage and brutality, but we will leave a wake of destruction which may or may not be redeemable. However, the change produced in Peace and Serenity will bring healing and longevity. Do not make the mistake of viewing Peace, Serenity and Acceptance as weakness. They do not abide in the same realm.
