I've been impressed by the recent backlash surrounding the pinkwashing campaign of KFC and the Susan G. Komen foundation.  (a popular breast cancer fundraising group whose greed and lack of integrity inspired them to partner with a notoriously unhealthy fast "food" giant)  I think Congressman Dennis Kucinich's wife, Elizabeth, said it best:  "Selling chicken in a pink bucket to raise money for breast cancer research is like selling pink cigarettes to benefit lung cancer or selling pink bottles of liquor to support Alcoholics Anonymous. It is outrageous!"
Revlon and other corporations whose products very likely cause cancer.  And where does the money actually go, anyway?  To doctors, Big Pharm and employees of "non-profits", that's who!

If you want to help people affected by cancer there are plenty of ways to turn your good intentions into meaningful action.  Even when they desperately need help, many people will politely refuse it.  We don't like being a "charity case"".  But, don't give up!  They are very likely in need of something; figure out what it is and just do it!

*Host a fundraising event or collect donations for a family affected by cancer, allowing them to decide how to spend the money (the day we returned home from my 10 yr old daughter's first chemotherapy, I went to the pharmacy to fill her Rx for anti-nausea meds and was shocked when the pharmacist said our insurance company wouldn't cover the cost!  The price was $10 per pill; I left in tears to go borrow the money from a friend.  The first donation we received was used to purchase new clothes to help hide her colostomy)

*Cook a nutritious meal or provide a gift certificate to their favorite grocery store

*Offer to provide transportation or run errands

*Reach out to older siblings; their needs are often overlooked

*Purchase a gift certificate for movie rentals

*Wash their laundry

*Create a place on the Internet to keep family and friends up to date

*Take their kids someplace special or babysit for a few hours

*Donate your hair to Locks of Love

*Purchase a gift certificate to their hospital's gift shop or cafeteria

*Buy them a camera

*Care for their pet or purchase pet food

*Accompany them on a walk or bike ride

*Attend school and/or sports functions when a parent can't be there

*Offer to make phone calls, write letters or do research

*Stop using products that pollute our bodies and our planet; start by cleaning your home

*Pay their utility bill

*Buy them a pre-paid cell phone (with lots of minutes)

*Mow their lawn or do other yard work

*Make holiday preparations for busy parents; wrap presents or decorate a Christmas tree, make Halloween costumes, Easter baskets, birthday parties, holiday baking

*Give them a gift card for gas or an oil change

*Purchase an air and/or water purifier

*Watch for signs of depression and provide support

*Bring them healthy food when they are hospitalized

*Organize their mail or the reams of paperwork they are inundated with; purchase a durable folder for storage/travel

*Purchase a laptop computer so they can do research and communicate with loved ones when they are hospitalized

*Provide pictures of friends, family or special places to have at the hospital

*Listen when they need to talk; talk when they need a distraction

Please don't visit the hospital or send fresh flowers without asking first; most cancer patients are in isolation because chemo drugs destroy the immune system.  Even the slightest infection can be deadly.

Random acts of kindness are important and as easy as sharing a SMILE  There are millions of ways to make a difference that don't cost a dime!  Sharing LOVE and HOPE is not about money!

Many people  have asked me about the symptoms of ovarian cancer; sadly, there are often none until it's advanced stages when a tumor has become large enough to feel, and is more difficult to treat.  This is why ovarian cancer is known as the "Silent Killer". However, sometimes ovarian cancer whispers its symptoms. Listen to your body and be aware of:
*Pelvic or abdominal pain, discomfort, swelling, bloating, hardness and/or feeling of fullness

*Vague but persistent gastrointestinal (tummy) upsets-such as gas, nausea and indigestion

*Frequency and/or urgency of urination in the absence of an infection

*Unexplained weight gain or weight loss

*Ongoing, unusual fatigue

*Unexplained changes in bowel habits

If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!
Be assertive! Insist on an exam, blood tests and an ultra-sound.
A Pap Test looks for cervical cancer; it will NOT detect ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer can strike ANY female, even very young girls and women with no family history.

When is the last time you heard of a teal ribbon campaign?  I never have.  Apparently, we don't have a big marketing guru like the pink ribbon ladies.  Help raise awareness about "The Silent Killer".
Help save LIVES!
Please share this information with all the women you love and care about.  Don't wait; send, copy, forward, post or print this page NOW!

"The National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society focus most of their resources on research and treatment rather than on cancer prevention. By talking as if the cure is around the corner and their "war on cancer" is being won, when certain cancer rates—notably breast cancer and lung cancer among women and malignant melanoma—are on the rise, they divert attention from strict regulation of industry and minimizing people's exposure to carcinogens."

"The Recurring Silent Spring" [1989]
~H. Patricia Hynes~

It should be noted that incidence rates for most childhood cancers, carcininoid tumors, (gastrointestinal system) and many others are also rising every year. It is appalling that our situation has only worsened in the last 20 years!  It should be criminal.

Conventional cancer "treatment" causes serious damage to healthy cells throughout the body, therefore, doctors closely monitor blood counts.  Many chemo patients require transfusions.
*Low red cells means you may be anemic and tired
*Low white cells means your body's immune system can't fight infection
*Low platelets means your blood can't clot and you could bleed out from just a cut or bruise

If you have no experience at a given task it is easy to feel intimidated; the old adage "Knowledge is Power", is sometimes very true. Yet, knowledge is only powerful if you know what to do with it.  Through trial and error I have discovered that if you are persistent, you will likely find people to guide you. Along with the chapter on "Activist Resources" and posts filed under " these are some tips I find helpful:

*Document everything! Phone calls, meetings, research, names, dates; get a notebook and keep track of it ALL; be sure to save the complete web address where you find useful information; keep a list of questions that need answers

*Always be professional. Always be polite. It can be very difficult to control emotions when you feel threatened, but you will lose all credibility if you lose your temper

*Know your facts! Documenting your facts; being able to prove what you know, will build credibility and confidence

*Choose your battles wisely and always maintain a good relationship with the media, especially in a small town. The media can get your message out to the masses or silence you

*Ask for help! There are good people in business, government & civic organizations, seek them out, let their expertise guide you. I literally got out the phone book & just started calling locals for support and advice. Environmental groups, college staff, attorneys, county employees; all can offer useful information and most are more than happy to help

*There is power in numbers; get your family, friends and neighbors involved in your campaign. Get your message on the Internet via your own web site, Twitter, Facebook or by e-mail, ask everyone to "keep forwarding".

According to data on the CDC website, "It is estimated that more than $2.2 billion* is spent on the treatment of ovarian cancer per year in the U.S". (*2004 dollars)

The amount of money spent yearly on all types of cancer treatment more than doubled between 1995-2008, from $41 billion to more than $93 billion.  Experts estimate cancer's "total economic burden",** for 2008 to be over $228 billion.
Journal of Clinical Oncology stated:  "It is well established that the cost of health care (including cancer care) in the United States is growing more rapidly than the overall economy."

Ever stop to think about who profits from all the money spent on cancer treatment?  Certainly not the patients, many of whom lose everything: their homes, their life-savings, their health (treatment is toxic and causes additional long-term harm) and of course, many people die.  The profiteers in the big business of cancer are the doctors, hospitals and of course the pharmaceutical companies.  The same group of people who are charged with "curing" cancer.  But they already know how to stop cancer from killing so many people.  Its easy, but there's no profit in it.  Its called PREVENTIONTreatment is their cash-cow and they aren't giving it up.

Every year we spend billions of dollars more than the previous year on cancer treatment.  And yet, in the U.S.A., a man, woman or child dies every minute of every day from cancer.

(**"Total economic burden" is bureaucratic double-speak, defined by the NCI as:  "The economic cost to the nation associated with expenditures on cancer preventive, screening and treatment services, the economic cost associated with time and effort spent by patients and their families undergoing cancer treatment and the economic cost associated with lost productivity due to cancer-related disability and premature death.")

Welcome to "Screams and Whispers".  It is my goal to provide accurate and current information that will be useful to anyone interested in learning about cancer.  While the main focus is on ovarian and childhood cancers, most of this site is universal to all cancers.

There is a great deal of information in the main chapters at the top of the page, from nutrition and emotional support, to education and activism.  There are also several news feeds and posts to keep you up to date with the latest headlines.

I encouage you to leave comments or contact me by e-mail.

Cancer rates are going down. Fewer people are dying. Gazillions of dollars spent on cancer research since the 1970's has greatly improved peoples lives. It all sounds so good, doesn't it? Too bad its all a big lie.

A statistical engineer once told me that numbers can be manipulated to say whatever you want. And when the government is mandating the goals, dolling out the money and engineering the stats, you can be sure they are skewing the message to serve their needs. And what elected officials "need" is to stay in office where the money flows like an oil slick in the Gulf-without restraint or accountability.
1-page report that made me so angry I was shaking; so sad I was crying.
It is true: A HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF CHILDREN ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER THAN EVER BEFORE! It is shocking and unbelievable. And true.

My favorite word in the English language is "why". I had already found many answers to my cancer questions, but the pieces didn't fit together into a logical, complete picture until I read that single-page report and it all clicked. In an instant I became a true believer. "What to do now", I wondered. I wanted to start calling people and shouting it from the rooftops: "MORE AMERICANS ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER THAN EVER BEFORE!"

Why am I so driven to get this message out to people?  Because I believe we can change the world.  (Oh yeah, I wear rose colored glasses  I want to end surgeries that leave children sterile, brain damaged and without limbs.  I want to end chemotherapy and radiation "treatments" that destroy childrens' immune systems and cause serious, life-long health problems and early death.  I want to end the heartache of millions of families around the world.

I am sick and tired of the sugar-coated fairytales found in the "main-stream-media".  I believe people will be motivated to demand change when they are told the TRUTH about cancer: A higher percentage of people are being diagnosed with cancer now than ever before!! Childhood cancer incidence rates are particularly disturbing as nearly every type has seen increases since the 1970's. Ovarian cancer, known as the "Silent Killer", silences more than 40 women every day in the United States. In fact, cancer kills more than 1 person every single minute, more than 1500 people every day, and that's only in the U.S.

How many people died while you read this post?  Too many; far too many.
