Is this how we show kids we care?  Are breasts more important than babies??  Incidence rates for childhood cancer have steadily increased over the past 30 years and it is now the #1 disease killing our children, so how (OMG!! HOW??) does the National Cancer Institute justify REDUCING the funding of research that could help kids survive??!

Contact NCI director Harold Varmus at and ask him to explain his reasoning!

Want to do even more to help the thousands of kids who are diagnosed with cancer every year?  Contact the President & Congress and DEMAND change KIDS can LIVE with!

If the past 40 years have taught us anything, it is that we will NEVER win the "War on Cancer" if we don't change the way we battle it; we simply cannot cut-poison-burn our way out of the epidemic that kills more than 1,500 people in the US every day.  Radiation & the vast majority of chemotherapies cause cancer!!  'Treatment' shouldn't cause the very disease it is meant to cure, right?  And if we know prevention works, (and we do) then more efforts need to be made to educate people, including lawmakers, about implementing prevention strategies that help all people reduce their risk of being one of the 4,500 people in the US who are newly diagnosed with cancer every day.

From the May 2013 issue of CancerScope:

"Margaret Cuomo, MD, a radiologist and author of the book "A World Without Cancer", agrees with Dr. Watson that progress against the disease has been slow. 2 “We are still relying on surgery, chemotherapy, and other anticancer drugs and radiation, just as we did 40 years ago,” she writes in her book. She adds that although those techniques have been perfected to better treat the disease and extend lives, the goal of actually preventing the disease in the first place has fallen short."
"Although the American Cancer Society stresses the importance of prevention, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has a Division of Cancer Prevention, only about 2% of the NCI's total annual budget of $5 billion is dedicated to prevention, says Dr. Cuomo. This is despite the NCI stating in its 2012 budget request that much of the progress against cancer in the past decade can be attributed to prevention and control efforts. “They acknowledge the effectiveness of prevention, but we're just not devoting enough of the financial and intellectual resources to it,” she says. “The model of medical treatment in this country is that we are trained to fix what is broken—we're not trained as physicians in the preventive or integrative model.”
"She proposes establishing a National Cancer Prevention Institute that would gather experts from these and other fields to focus on the most effective prevention strategies for the disease. According to Dr. Cuomo, more than 50% of cancers are preventable by applying known strategies, including diet, exercise, sun protection, eliminating alcohol and tobacco use, and reducing toxins in cleaning and personal care products."

Any conversation about preventing cancer must address the toxins in our food, water & other consumer goods.  The usual prevention mantra focuses on "lifestyle" changes we could make to reduce our cancer risk: diet, exercise, tobacco use, etc. I take serious issue with that 'blame-the-patient' propaganda because childhood cancer incidence rates have been rising steadily for decades, but infants & children don't make ANY risky 'lifestyle' choices to explain their cancers.

Exposure to multiple estrogen-mimicking chemicals distorts hormone action

News from EHN:

"An international team of experts reported today that evidence linking hormone-mimicking chemicals to human health problems has grown stronger over the past decade, becoming a "global threat" that should be addressed."

“Over the past decade, we know much better that chronic diseases, ones related to the endocrine system, are increasing globally,” said Thomas Zoeller, a professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a co-author of the report."

"Such diseases include male reproductive problems, pregnancy complications, certain cancers, obesity and brain development. Many factors can cause these diseases, but the report concludes that given how fast some are rising, environmental chemicals are likely playing a role."

"Fetuses, babies and young children “are not just little adults” and are the most vulnerable to hormone-altering chemicals since their bodies are still developing, the authors wrote."

"The report also cites threats to wildlife, particularly killer whales and harbour seals. Both have high levels of PCBs and flame retardants that accumulate in ocean ecosystems."

"One problem vexing those who study endocrine-disrupting chemicals is the vast number of them – about 800 are known – and how they may interact with one another. They’re in a variety of goods – such as pesticides, flame retardants, plastics, cosmetics and canned foods – and research has only touched the “tip of the iceberg,” according to the report."

“The vast majority of chemicals in current commercial use have not been tested at all,” the authors wrote in the summary."

~ Minestrone Soup ~
"This is a basic but lovely vegetable soup – it’s jam-packed fully of goodness and will do anyone who eats it the world of good! You can either keep it hearty and chunky or you can cook the soup without the pasta in it, whiz it up in a blender, pour it back in the saucepan with some pasta and cook until the pasta is soft. Delicious!" (and a fantastic method of getting veggies into kids and/or adults who balk at 'health food')

~ TIP: Use whole wheat pasta or try replacing the pasta with 1/3 cup Quinoa

Important progress is being made in cancer research regarding the causes and also the role that our genes play in determining who develops cancer.  The article from The Santa Barbara Independent reports some amazing findings about the differences in adult and childhood cancer, which also seems to confirm other studies that suggest some cancers begin in the womb.

"It’s known that these genes are also very important during normal brain development, which again emphasizes how this childhood cancer is different from adult cancers; the childhood cancer is almost certainly the result of something going wrong during development."
"It’s becoming clearer that childhood cancer, as shown here with medulloblastoma, is due to problems that manifest during fetal development."
