From Ayahuasca and Plant Spirit Shamanism - Ayahuasca, Moses, and the Ten Commandments - Biblical Plant Spirit Shamanism:

Ayahuasca, Moses and Plant Spirit Shamanism of the Bible
Moses was high on drugs: Israeli researcher

Moses and the Ten CommandmentsThe world wide media interest in Benny Shanon's paper about Moses and entheogens, is encouraging us to take a good and hard look at the roots of religions and the notion that they were based on fertility cults, and shamanic practices such as Entheogens (or hallucinogenic) plants as a source of spiritual communion with the universal consciousness, or the mind of God.

John Allegro, in his book "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross: A Study of the Nature and Origins of Christianity within the Fertility Cults of the Ancient Near East", postulated through the etymology of words and relates how the development of language indicated that the roots of the religions emanating from the Middle East were based on fertility cults, and shamanic practices such as Entheogens (or hallucinogenic) plants as a source of spiritual communion with the universal consciousness, or the mind of God..

Back in the 1970's the reaction against these ideas was so strong that it destroyed Allegro's career, the book was not published in the UK as it was regarded as blasphemous, and blasphemy was still a crime. It's good to think that we have made some progress in recent years.

Allegro's theory was visionary and ground-breaking. He was the first to propose in some detail that two major religions Christianity and by extension Judaism were entheogen-oriented and that the entheogen was Amanita Muscaria. His book was published at a time when there was little or no awareness about the use of entheogens, and was indeed a courageous act to publish this book.

Another great explorer and pathfinder in human consciousness was Terence Mckenna, in his book "Food of the Gods: The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge A Radical History of Plants, Drugs, and Human Evolution", proposed that hallucinogenic plants, in this case Psilocybin mushrooms, were the cause of the astounding and unexplained rapid evolution and development of the human brain within the evolutionary time scale (just 500,000 years from the hominids). In other words how we developed from our ape relatives . His theory also encompasses the development of linguistics , and human civilisation itself.

JERUSALEM (AFP) - High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.

Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."

He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.

He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

Benny Shanon is Professor of psychology at the Hebrew university of Jerusalem (Israel). His main foci of research are the phenomenology of human consciousness and the philosophy of psychology. His publications include The representational and the Presentational (1993) and The Antipodes of the Mind (2002). At present, he is working on book devoted to a general psychological theory of human consciousness.

WORLDWIDE CALL TO
The Indigenous Peoples, Nations, Communities and Organizations of the World and all Humankind

PLANETARY CEREMONY
FOR THE HEALING THE MOTHER EARTH, FOR
PEACE AND LIFE

1. Epicenter  of the Great Ceremony of Purification and Harmonization: The Place of  the Great Ceremony of the Cosmic Sound and the 8000 Sacred Drums for the Healing of the Mother Earth, for Life and Peace, will  be in the Otomi Nation, Mexico, on March 21, 2008, at noon, with synchronized ceremonies the same day around the world. The point of connection in Mexico will be in the Otomi Ceremonial Center, State of Mexico. We will meet in a spiritual and powerful way within our hearts, in our homes, ceremonial centers and sacred places, from America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Australian Continent, and in all  regions of our Planet.

The  Otomi Olmec Toltec Teotihuacan Tradition will organize these Ceremonies from Mexico on these dates (Including the Indigenous World Congress for the Healing of Mother Earth on March 17-20, and the Atlantean Pilgrimage to the Otomi Olmec Toltec Teotihuacan Land on March 22-25), and calls to the entire world to participate, right here and right now, to unite together in this connection  to generate the most powerful field of luminous and harmonious energy that expands to all the planet.

Preceding  this magnificent event there were ceremonies. Altogether there were encounters.  According to the indigenous calendar, these ceremonies are in connection with the period of the Full Moon, which will be celebrated  on these days to enhance the intensity of light, health and love to all the Earth and living beings. We will be able to make  connection ceremonies from the Spriing Equinox also, which begins on March 21.

2.  The Spirit of 8,000 Sacred Drums. This ceremony is to transform the energy of the Earth’s Changes in Light and Love. The messages from our wise elders (both  men and women) also speak to us of the need to transform drums of war into Drums of Peace and recognize the importance of  the work for harmony and the peaceful resolution of conflicts around the world.

We  wish to leave a message of Love and Respect for all forms of Life on the planet. Life with Liberty, Justice, Dignity and Sacred  Peace is to recognize that Everything is Sacred, and that our mission is to work to ensure that our life is in equilibrium  with our families, communities, peoples, humanity, plants, animals, air, earth, fire, water, the Cosmos and our own heart.

We  wish to present the option for Life and Peace on Mother Earth as a legacy for present and future generations. The prophecy  of the ancestors of the Otomí Native Nation, in other words, the Olmecas-Toltecas-Teotihuacanos, the Sacred Civilization of  Silence, Sound, Time, Space and Corn (Ñätho-Ñähñu-‘Ñuhmu-‘Ñuhu), is an Awakening of Indigenous Peoples and of  All Humankind. We will come together to make the Sound of 8,000 Sacred Drums (the number may be 8,000 times 8,000 worldwide)  to enable the Vibration of All the Sacred Drums to generate Mähki ‘Ñithi (Powerful Sacred Medicine) and Ts’edi  Pa (intensified Healing Energy) to Heal Mother Earth, focusing our energy in the Indian Ocean and  the other areas of the disaster.

3. Meeting  Place. Mexico, notwithstanding those who cannot attend, in the thousands or millions,  can connect with this Grand Indigenous Ceremony (America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia) in their home or community. The  point of connection in Mexico will be in the Otomi Ceremonial Center, Temoaya, State of Mexico, near Mexico City.

This  is why, with all the love and respect of our heart, we are inviting your Family, Group, Council, Collective, Association, Community, Native People or Nation of all regions and countries worldwide to meet at some Sacred Place (a Valley, Desert,  Jungle, Island, Lake, Forest, Mountain, Cave, River, Waterfall, Ceremonial Center, Temple or special Site of your own, at  the Altar in your Home, your Cultural or Educational Center or some other Meeting Place, such as a Public Square, Garden)  or any other space conducive to a Meeting.

3.1.  Time and Date of Ceremony. The concept is to join the Sounds  of the Sacred Drums with your Ceremonial Instruments and Prayers for an hour at 12 noon (local time at every location on the  Planet) on March 21th, 2008 (friday).

Depending on your local capabilities and conditions, you can begin your activities for one hour  or 12 hours any time between dawn and dusk, or activities may continue all day (for 24 hours). Also, other ceremonies can  be celebrated on the days of the Full Moon in these months.

 4.  Ways to Connect and Share. You can play and thereby connect with the cosmic sound of the Sacred Drums or other  similar native and ceremonial instruments. You can also connect through other musical instruments, dancing and sacred chants; you can hold a ceremony or rituals; you can meditate or pray in any language. You can unite the drum of your heart with the  drum of all Humankind. May all the power and sacred medicine of the Sacred Drums and other healing instruments spread to all the areas of the planet affected by the Disasters. The blessing of the Nzuni, the Cosmic Sound, can come  to us, unite us and bring us together, reconcile us, heal us and bring joy to our hearts.

5.  For the Earth, Peace and Life. Every Sister, Brother, Family, Group, Council, Collective, Association, Community,  Native People, Native Nation or any other Tradition from every area on the planet can have activities before, during and after the Grand Ceremony of 8,000 Sacred Drums. These activities may be focused on the defense and respect of Mother Earth (jungles,  forests, ceremonial centers and sacred sites), Peace (for the collective rights of Indigenous Peoples and of all Traditional  Societies worldwide) and Life (Equilibrium with animal, plant, mineral and human Life. Life is sacred and in harmony and dignity  with all living things.).

6.  Be in Touch. We ask you to be in communication with us. Let us know how many Sacred Drums are involved from  your home areas; let us know that we are connecting with every place and region so that we will know about the ceremonies,  meetings, festivals, workshops, meditations, and ceremonial, cultural and fraternal activities being held around Sacred Drums.  May the shimmering of light bathe us and may healing energy transform the negativity of the disasters to  spread it among everyone so that we can feel, experience and share in peace and love at all times.

7. Sacred  Ceremony. With respect all People, Communities or Traditions, we invite you to connect to this Great Ceremony for  the Healing of the Mother Earth, for Life and Peace. For those who would like to attend, we will share this Sacred Way received  by our Indigenous Tradition for the Ceremony of March 21, 2008, with you. As a gesture of love and respect, you may begin  as follows:

-Dawn Ceremony (Greetings to the Four Directions, the Heart of  the Sky and of the Earth and Our Heart).
-Offering to Mother Earth, Father Sun and Grandmother Moon.
-Meditation with the Sound of Silence for the healing of the Mother Earth.
-Ceremony to Bless and Consecrate the Drums and Musical Instruments.
-Harmonious playing and cosmic sound of the Drums  (12:00 noon).
-Messages to heal Mother Nature and ensure Life and Peace of the Four Directions.
-Sacred Convergence (Music and Song).
-Farewell Ceremony (Greetings to the Four Directions, the Heart of the Sky and of the Earth, and Our Heart).

8. Honoring to Mother Earth: Our People, the First Otomi Nation, have organized at the Ceremonial Center Otomí de Temoaya, State of Mexico, Mexico,  the greatest Ceremony of the Cosmic Sound and the 8000 Sacred Drums for the Healing of the Mother Earth, for Life and Peace,  and the First International Indigenous Encounter of Sacred Drums on the previous equinox, March 21, 2007, where thousand of  people worldwide united their prayers and sounds for the balance of the planet. The next Ceremony of the 8000 Sacred Drums  at the Ceremonial Center Otomí, Temoaya, Mexico will be on March 2008, continuing every year until 2012.

9. Blessings: With the vision of the Elders, Guardians of the Earth and the Ancestral Wisdom, we are  dedicating our life for this great Planetary Harmonic Connection. In order to solidify this, it is required to unite all our  energies full of love. Thank you for your blessings. We ask for your support and contribution to carry out this great mission  for the Healing of the Mother Earth, for Life and Peace. What is the Story of Stuff?

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

Norval Morrisseau - Shaman Artist

(1931-2007)

“My paintings are icons, that is to say, they are images which help focus on spiritual powers, generated by traditional belief and wisdom.”

Morrisseau signature

TORONTO -- Ojibwa painter Norval Morrisseau, one of Canada's most celebrated artists, has died at the age of 75.

Called "the Picasso of the North" by Marc Chagall, Morrisseau rose to prominence in the 1960s, the first aboriginal artist to achieve success in the mainstream art world. Last year he became the first aboriginal artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

Morrisseau, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, was an ailing old man in a wheelchair when he attended the 2006 gallery opening in Ottawa. But he was a young man in Beardmore, a northern Ontario mining town, when he was "discovered" by Jack Pollock, a Toronto art dealer, in 1962.

Pollock, hired by the province to teach art in northern communities, was working out of a one-room school when Morrisseau walked in.

"He was disgusting -- drunk and he had pissed his pants -- and he had a roll of birch bark and paper under his arm," Pollock wrote in his 1989 memoir. "He had heard this white teacher was up from Toronto and he wanted to show me his paintings."

Pollock took one look and got goosebumps. "I knew he was a genius." Pollock gave Morrisseau his first show.

Born at Sand Point Reserve, near Beardmore, Ont., in 1932 -- his age was always a mystery because of conflicting birth records -- Morrisseau, also called Copper Thunderbird, was a self-taught artist who combined elements from his Ojibwa heritage and European influences to originate the pictographic style, which became known as the Woodland or Anishnaabe School of Art.

"I transmit astral plane harmonies through my brushes into the physical plane," reads a quotation from Morrisseau on the unofficial Web site www.norvalmorrisseau.com. "These otherworld colours are reflected in the alphabet of nature, a grammar in which the symbols are plants, animals, birds, fishes, earth and sky. I am merely a channel for the spirit to utilize, and it is needed by a spirit-starved society."

A shaman and a storyteller, Morrisseau inspired generations of native artists. His style was widely imitated and as prices for his work rose, so did the number of forgeries.

"Morrisseau reveals something of the soul of humanity through colour and his unique 'X-ray' style of imaging: Sinewy black 'spirit' lines emanate, surround, and link animal and human figures, and skeletal elements and internal organs are visible within their brightly coloured segments," said the National Gallery in its announcement of the exhibit last year titled Norval Morrisseau: Shaman Artist.

Ruth Phillips, an art historian who is compiling a catalogue of all of Morrisseau's known works, called the artist's death a huge shock.

"Norval Morrisseau bridged the historical tradition of his ancestors -- which ranged from ritual arts used in Shamanism ... to beautifully decorated clothing, painting on rocks -- to a new form of modern art expressed in drawings and prints. He also took oral traditions and transformed them into modern visual art."

Phillips remembers Morrisseau as a spiritual, warm and engaging man.

"He blazed a path that many young artists followed. He was a great role model for younger artists. His courage, in confronting the oppression, the attempt by government policy which began in the 19th century to silence and hasten the end of traditional indigenous knowledge, it took great courage to confront that. He was an extraordinary man."

Morrisseau's career and life were marked by artistic and commercial success, an Order of Canada, magical mystery tours reserved for the most powerful of shamans, sexual abuse by priests, alcohol and drug abuse, a libertine sex life ("I did everything under the sun"), jail time, brief patronage from the mob, periods of extreme poverty, estrangement from his seven children and, late in life, a happy, sober ending.

Morrisseau has been awarded honourary doctorates from McGill and McMaster universities and has received the eagle feather, which is the highest honour awarded by the Assembly of First Nations.

"Norval Morrisseau was the key figure at the centre of an Indigenous art movement in Canada in the 1960s that broke through stereotypes, racism and discrimination in that era,"said Assembly of First Nations national Chief Phil Fontaine in a statement on Tuesday. "He struggled to have his art shown in fine art galleries. And he succeeded."

In 1989, he was the only Canadian painter invited to exhibit at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris to mark the bicentennial of the French Revolution. In 2005 he was elected to the ranks of The Royal Society of Canada, a group of 1,800 distinguished Canadians selected by their peers for their outstanding contributions to the arts, natural and social sciences and the humanities.

Most recently, Morrisseau, who stopped painting in 2002, received the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.

A Morrisseau painting graced the cover of Bruce Cockburn's album Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws, which produced his breakthrough hit Wondering Where the Lions Are.

Earlier this year a highly public battle over Morrisseau's legacy erupted. Gabe Vadas, Morrisseau's companion and caregiver since the two met in the 1980s on the streets of Vancouver and unofficially adopted each other, became the spokesman for the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society, which has been fighting with the Morrisseau Family Foundation, headed by Morrisseau's son Christian, for the right to authenticate the artist's works.

Repeated heart problems weakened him noticeably over the past year, Vadas told the Toronto Star.

"He'd have a great day then he'd have a bad day," said Vadas. "But he was getting worse."

Morrisseau died at Toronto General Hospital on Tuesday morning. There will be no funeral, although there will be visitation at Jarrett Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday.

Intro:
The 16th century alchemist and philosopher, Paracelsus, introduced in his treatise the Doctrine of Signatures , the concept that the Creator has placed his seal on plants to indicate their medicinal uses.

How this principle operates with medicinal plants found in the Amazon:
