7:18 AM - Kangaroo beating videotaped, youth sought Case Details Kangaroo beating videotaped, youth sought unknown, WA (AU) Incident Date: Thursday, Sep 11, 2008 Disposition: Open Case Images: 2 files available Case Snapshot: Case ID: 14563 Classification: Beating Animal: other wildlife View more cases in WA (AU) Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help! The RSPCA has launched an Australia wide search for a youth who was video taped beating a kangaroo as his friend looks on laughing. The video was sent to the RSPCA in WA and shows the youth using kickboxing style attacks on the kangaroo. In one scene the man pulls the kangaroo towards him and uses his knee to deliver a blow to the animal's chest. The final punch knocks the kangaroo to the ground where it appears to lie unconscious. The RSPCA says it is unclear whether the attack resulted in the death of the animal. A spokesman for the RSPCA, Richard Barry, says the organisation has launched a nationwide appeal to catch the men responsible for the footage. "We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the cowards behind the vicious attack on this kangaroo," he said. "Thankfully this sickening footage has now been removed from the website where it was first seen. The next stage is to ensure that those responsible for this film are brought to justice. "Only a coward would attack an injured and obviously terrified young animal much smaller than himself. We want these cowards to be caught, charged and prosecuted. "We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the culprits and we have also posted a photo of the youth at www.rspcawa.asn.au," he added. The RSPCA also welcomes the support of the Western Australia Police in finding the perpetrators of this senseless attack. Steve McLeod, a native wildlife expert, believes the animal was injured prior to being attacked: "The kangaroo is very disoriented. It is very unusual for a kangaroo to fight like that as they invariably flee. I would hazard a guess that it has been knocked over by the car and injured. Certainly it has been stunned in some way." The RSPCA across Australia has joined forces to launch a nationwide appeal to catch the cowards who shot this appalling footage. "We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the cowards behind the vicious attack on this kangaroo," said Richard Barry, spokesman for the RSPCA in WA. "We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the culprits and we have also posted a photo of the youth at www.rspcawa.asn.au The RSPCA also welcomes the support of the Western Australia Police in finding the perpetrators of this senseless attack. "The RSPCA is sending a clear message that this behaviour is not only unacceptable, it is against the law. "People might think posting videos on the internet provides them some anonymity but the RSPCA is here to tell those people that when it comes to animal cruelty, we have zero tolerance and we will use every resource to track you down." If you know the identity of the youth in the video, contact your local RSPCA. Dangerous Medicine: Examples of Animal-Based “Safety” Tests Gone Wrong

By John J. Pippin, M.D., and Kristie Stoick, M.P.H.

Biological differences between and within species require scientists to proceed with caution when interpreting the results of any experiment. Animals of different ages, sexes, developmental stages, and of different health status can all respond differently to experimental treatments. It is no surprise, then, that humans respond differently to administered pharmaceuticals than other animals. The surprise comes when scientists, physicians, and regulatory officials are willing to risk the health of patients by relying on animal experiments to predict the effects of drugs in humans—sometimes with grave results.

According to some estimates, adverse drug reactions are responsible for 2.2 million hospitalizations and 106,000 deaths annually.1 Furthermore, as many as 50 percent of FDA-approved drugs are withdrawn or relabeled due to unanticipated side effects in humans.23 Below are a few selected examples to illustrate the dire need for better, more human-specific drug safety tests. A shockingly low 56 percent of known human teratogens are positive in one of six species surveyed.

Thalidomide
Perhaps the most famous teratogen, this drug was given to pregnant women in the 1950’s to control nausea, causing more than 10,000 births with limb-reduction defects.4,5 After thalidomide was withdrawn from the market, tests in pregnant mice, rats, and guinea pigs were negative; finally, one strain of rabbit (the New Zealand white rabbit) was found to be susceptible. Cats, hamsters, rats, and mice were later found to be sensitive only to extremely high doses.3

Oraflex, Opren (Benoxaprofen)
Even though year-long tests in rhesus monkeys6 gave no indication of risk, months after this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) was released onto the market in 1982, patients began experiencing severe liver toxicity and phototoxicity,7,8 eventually resulting in withdrawl of the drug, but only after more than 3,500 serious adverse events and 60 deaths occurred in Britain alone.9

Flenac (Fenclofenac)
This NSAID, despite passing animal toxicity tests in 10 animal species (mice, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, horses, and monkeys), produced severe liver toxicity in humans.10

Butazolidin (Phenylbutazone)
This NSAID is commonly used in equine medicine to reduce pain and inflammation, but in humans can produce serious phototoxicity,11 as well as serious or fatal liver12 or bone marrow13 disease. Bone marrow toxicity was demonstrated in human cell cultures after the drug was released and produced more than 10,000 fatal cases of aplastic anemia.14-16

Cylert (Pemoline)
Fifteen children suffered acute liver failure after taking this attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment, and 12 of those cases resulted in liver transplant or death.17 No animal tests that showed an indication of hepatic toxicity could be found.

Rezulin (Troglitazone)
This drug, intended to treat type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes, was approved by the FDA in 1997. Rezulin lowered the blood sugar in rats without producing adverse effects, but reports of severe and even fatal liver failure appeared immediately after approval. Due largely to an aggressive investigation by the Los Angeles Times and after four label changes, Rezulin was withdrawn in 2000 after 391 deaths were attributed to the drug.18

Propulsid (Cisapride)
Propulsid was approved by the FDA in 1993 and was used primarily to treat gastric reflux in children. Heart rhythm disturbances had appeared in clinical trials, but not in animal studies. By 1995, heart rhythm deaths in children became evident through adverse events reports. The drug remained on the market with five label changes, until being withdrawn in 2000 after causing over 300 deaths.18

Inocor (Amrinone)
This short-term therapy option for patients with severe heart failure produced severe and sometimes fatal thrombocytopenia (decreased blood clotting ability) in humans, despite no evidence of this effect in 2-year-long animal tests. Only after approval, and only in marmosets and a very specific, metabolically compromised strain of rat, were similar effects found.7

Baycol (Cerivastatin)
Baycol was a popular drug approved in 1997 for the treatment of dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol levels), but it was withdrawn after substantial risk for severe or fatal rhabdomyolysis (muscle wasting) was revealed in patients. Muscle wasting was not seen in pre-clinical animal tests, including rats, mice, minipigs, dogs, or monkeys; only at very high doses were indications of effects on muscle tissue seen.19 The authors concluded that cerivastatin was well tolerated in all species. Post-withdrawal tests using rat and human muscle cells in vitro revealed that rat cells are 200 times more resistant to the drug’s effects.20 Eventually more than 100 deaths were linked to cerivastatin.

Such a high error rate begs the question: How many possibly life-saving therapies have clinicians never investigated because of toxicities in other animal species? Penicillin, which was originally discovered in 1929, wasn’t used until 1939 because of its ineffectiveness in curing infected rabbits. If it had been “safety” tested in cats, guinea pigs, or hamsters, it would have been abandoned as toxic.21

Furosemide (Lasix) is one of our most important diuretics, used to reduce fluid retention during heart failure and other diseases. Though experiments in mice show extensive liver damage, decades of clinical use have proven its safety for humans.22,23

One of our most relied-upon pain relievers, Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid), causes teratogenic malformations in mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, and monkeys.3

What You Can Do

  • More funding must be dedicated to the development of better, human-based drug safety tests. Write your federal legislators to explain this urgent need.
  • Encourage the National Institutes of Health to fund studies using non animal methods, such as the examples listed at the right. Contact NIH here:
    Elias Zerhouni, Director
    National Institutes of Health
    9000 Rockville Pike
    Bethesda, MD 20892
  • Support only health charities that fund non-animal research. A full list of those with the Humane Charity Seal of Approval can be found at www.HumaneSeal.org.

From: Supporting Stamford Animal Care & Control Shelter

Hello everyone,

Well, it's that time again, we are almost full - we have new dogs and cats coming in daily - we also have 2 new puppies and seven new kittens needing homes and we still have the 2 dwarf rabbits.

Many of our pets can be seen in the video below ~ but as always, come down to the shelter to see the latest arrivals

I'd like to take a moment to tell you about Transit, a special girl who was cruely abandoned on a Metro North commuter train. We got the call to come pick her up from the Stamford train station last June, which means she has been with us nearly a year now. She is a mixed breed with adorably funny ears. Won't you please give her the home she is so desperate to find? She will repay you with lots of kisses and tail wags.

She is a fun-loving medium sized girl, and she's waiting for you

If you cannot adopt - please repost - it is the easiest way to help the pets in need of homes

Thank you,
Blake

Consumers

To view the list of companies that support a boycott, go

The international boycott of Canadian seafood was implemented on March 29th, 2005, by some of the world's largest and most powerful animal and environmental protection organizations to end Canada's commercial seal hunt.

While supporters of the sealing industry claim a boycott will not stop the seal hunt, Canada's fishing industry is more susceptible to a consumer boycott today than at any time in its history.

There are two reasons why this is true. First, because recent Country-of-Origin labeling (COOL)legislation in the United States and European Union require all grocery stores to label seafood packaging with the country where the seafood was caught. Second, because some of the largest markets for Canadian seafood are in countries where the vast majority of consumers are opposed to Canada's annual seal slaughter. because of the traditional export trade patterns of Canadian seafood .

As a result of the recent COOL legislation, consumers in the United States and European Union will be able to identify Canadian seafood items right in their grocery stores.

According to a 2004 San Francisco Chronicle article:

Seafood sold in U.S. supermarkets, everything from wild salmon to bagged frozen shrimp to Mrs. Paul's fish sticks, will carry new labels this fall stating where it was caught, where it was processed and whether it is wild or farmed. The new labeling requirement is the result of a little noticed provision of a federal spending bill that recently passed Congress. It singles out the seafood industry as the first to conform to a "country of origin" food labeling law that the beef and pork industries have vigorously opposed.

And from the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada web site:

Canada exports over 80% of its fish and seafood production to more than 80 countries. In 2003, exports (630, 427 tonnes) were valued at $4.5 billion. The United States is Canada's largest export market (70% of Canadian seafood trade is with the U.S.), followed by Japan and the European Union.

ANOTHER BLOODY DAY
by Honey Sheperd
how can you sleep at night?
can you smile when you are blue?
have you ever seen an Eagle die?
is this relevant to you?
your world has become so shattered
so bruised & so battered
your tide is becoming grim
like that corpse upon the ice
you know it won't swim
i hope i have your attention
YEAH - i'm shouting at YOU!
i hope i've assaulted your senses
maybe then i'll get through
do you see what you've created?
this carnage so outdated?
where is your compassion?
cause nothing should die for fashion
how long must this go on?
i see your "conscience" is gone
from this pornographic song
of death at every dawn
i'm ashamed at your INFAMY
and all your "SLAUGHTER SYMPHONY"
how can you defend this madness?
i'm crying from such sadness
you are evil through & through
is this what money means to you?
there's a place in HELL waiting for you
i'm weak & teary eyed
no words left to say
you've slaughtered all the wild seals
it's just "ANOTHER BLOODY DAY"
and the more i see you GRINNING
i know the DEVIL IS WINNING...

Help End The Seal Pelt Trade
Cruel images and documentation of Canada’s seal hunt have convinced many countries including Italy, Belgium, Mexico, Luxembourg and Croatia to stop their trade in seal skins.

Visit http://www.savecanadianseals.org/flashmap.html to find out what countries are still importing Canadian seal skins. Find out how to get involved at a local level to change this trade statistic. As more markets close, the sealers will have less incentive for killing baby seals.

Let us know what you are doing to help seals. If you are working to end the cruel trade in seal pelts in your country, we would like to publicize your efforts. Please send an email to melissa@wspa.ca

Three Things That You Can Do To Help End Canada's Commercial Seal Hunt, Click Here.

Take Action

1. The single most important thing you can do to help end the seal hunt is to boycott all seafood products from Canada, until the commercial seal hunt ends.  The Canadian Seafood Boycott began on the day that the first seal was killed as a result of the commercial seal hunt.  It will end only when the Canadian government agrees to a timely end to the commercial seal hunt.

Residents of the United States and the European Union can look for the Country of Origin Label (COOL) at their grocery store or seafood retailer to identify all seafood products from Canada.

If you do not find COOL labeling on seafood at your local U.S. grocery store, contact Harpseals.org and let them know the address and telephone number of the store and the name of the seafood manager and store manager. They will notify the appropriate authorities in the U.S. of the store's non-compliance.

Residents of Canada who purchase fish at the retail level will have to ask the seafood manager or retailer to identify which products do not come from Canada.  No Country of Origin Labeling regulations exist in this country.

2. When you eat out, ask your restaurateur or server for only non-Canadian seafood menu items.

3. Ask family, friends and acquaintances to boycott all Canadian seafood.  Let them know about the Country of Origin Labeling required on all seafood packaging in the United States and the European Union.  Request that when they dine out they ask their restaurateur or server for only non-Canadian seafood menu items.

4. Leave a Boycott Bill with your restaurant payment.  The bill will remind the restaurant management of the need to boycott Canadian seafood.  A French Boycott Bill and an English Boycott Bill are available.

DO YOU KNOW THIS PUP?
Current mood: bummed
Category: Pets and Animals

CAN YOU HELP SOLVE THIS CRIME?
http://www.arrf-arrf.org/newdog.htm

Photobucket

This gorgeous little female puppy was brought to Dr. Wilkerson on 01-18-09 by way of the Greenville Police Dept. A policeman found her along the side of a road in Greenville, MS with her head, ears, eyes, and snoot completely taped. She was gasping for air and barely alive. Her coat of hair was completely shaved off from her neck to her tail.

The SICK individual(s) responsible for this CRIME will be punished to the FULLEST extent of the law, if the Greenville Police Department finds out who did this! ARRF is posting this message, hoping that you can help solve the heinous, cowardly crime.

She is in the safe care of Dr. Wilkerson now.

*If you would like more information or about how to adopt her, please contact us at our e-mail address: arrf303@aol.com (at aol.com).

There will be STRICT requirements to adopt her, and Dr. Wilkerson reserves the right to make the final decision regarding her adoption.
