The RSPCA has launched an Australia wide search for a youth who was video taped beating a kangaroo as his friend looks on laughing.
The video was sent to the RSPCA in WA and shows the youth using kickboxing style attacks on the kangaroo.
In one scene the man pulls the kangaroo towards him and uses his knee to deliver a blow to the animal's chest.
The final punch knocks the kangaroo to the ground where it appears to lie unconscious.
The RSPCA says it is unclear whether the attack resulted in the death of the animal.
A spokesman for the RSPCA, Richard Barry, says the organisation has launched a nationwide appeal to catch the men responsible for the footage.
"We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the cowards behind the vicious attack on this kangaroo," he said.
"Thankfully this sickening footage has now been removed from the website where it was first seen. The next stage is to ensure that those responsible for this film are brought to justice.
"Only a coward would attack an injured and obviously terrified young animal much smaller than himself. We want these cowards to be caught, charged and prosecuted.
"We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the culprits and we have also posted a photo of the youth at www.rspcawa.asn.au," he added.
The RSPCA also welcomes the support of the Western Australia Police in finding the perpetrators of this senseless attack.
Steve McLeod, a native wildlife expert, believes the animal was injured prior to being attacked: "The kangaroo is very disoriented. It is very unusual for a kangaroo to fight like that as they invariably flee. I would hazard a guess that it has been knocked over by the car and injured. Certainly it has been stunned in some way."
The RSPCA across Australia has joined forces to launch a nationwide appeal to catch the cowards who shot this appalling footage.
"We are appealing to every media outlet in Australia to help us track down the cowards behind the vicious attack on this kangaroo," said Richard Barry, spokesman for the RSPCA in WA.

The RSPCA also welcomes the support of the Western Australia Police in finding the perpetrators of this senseless attack.
"The RSPCA is sending a clear message that this behaviour is not only unacceptable, it is against the law.
"People might think posting videos on the internet provides them some anonymity but the RSPCA is here to tell those people that when it comes to animal cruelty, we have zero tolerance and we will use every resource to track you down."
If you know the identity of the youth in the video, contact your local RSPCA.

Rabbits found in filthy conditions claimed by owner
MediaNews
A man claiming to be the owner of 11 rabbits that were impounded from filthy cages by Oakland Animal Services earlier this week says he wants the animals back.
The man, whose name was not released, came to the shelter Thursday saying he was in the process of moving and that he made a mistake letting the condition of the cages get out of hand, Oakland Animal Services director Adam Parascandola said Friday.
Animal control officials are willing to give him a chance, Parascandola said, but the man may not get the rabbits back right away.
"It was not a good situation, but people do make mistakes from time to time," he said. "We're going to give him a chance to get them back. But first we'd like him to do some things, like get better housing for them. They really need to be in rabbit hutches instead of just cages. Some were in bird cages. The man said he'd be willing to do whatever it took."
The rabbits, some soaked in urine and kept with no food or water, were rescued by police Tuesday from dirty, cramped cages behind a four-plex in the 2800 block of Harrison Street in Oakland and taken to the Oakland Animal Services shelter.
When rescued, the rabbits did not seem excessively fearful or aggressive, and none was injured, animal control officers said. Neighbors confirmed that the rabbits had only been there a few days, Parascandola said.
The owner gave animal control officers several references about his care for the rabbits, which have so far checked out.
"We called the place where he gets his supplies and they confirmed he's usually in about twice a week and spends a lot of money on good quality food," Parascandola said. "A couple of the young rabbits were underweight, but apparently they had not been fed by the mother and he had taken on the feeding. That's not always easy to do. But he does have a vet, who said the man had brought the young ones in about this feeding situation."
Some rabbit rescue activists have expressed concern that anyone who would leave animals in that condition -- even for a brief time during a transit situation -- should not be allowed to have rabbits at all.
If the rabbits are not returned to the owner, they will be put up for adoption. For more information on animal adoptions at the Oakland animal shelter, visit www.oaklandanimalservices.org, or call 510-535-5602.
Dear Friends, Volunteers & Forgotten Felines Supporters: I know that many of you have read the article in the Press Democrat and are aware of “Adam” the kitten now in our care who was set on fire last week. Since there are a lot of unsubstantiated reports and rumors floating around out there, I wanted to give you an update and a more accurate report of what actually occurred.
There is a gentleman who for some time has been trapping and altering the feral cats in his apartment complex at Apple Valley. He is being paid by a private animal advocate whose aim is to reduce the number of feral cats living and being born there. This man has been utilizing the Forgotten Felines spay neuter clinics to get these cats fixed. He is NOT a Forgotten Felines volunteer nor are WE paying him. (It was deduced by a few folks who read the article that he is either employed or an FFSC volunteer – this is NOT the case.) OUR first rule in trapping is to NEVER leave a trap unattended – empty or occupied, a set trap should NEVER be left alone.
This gentleman set three traps on Tuesday evening 6/19/07 in preparation for the spay/neuter clinic which occurred on Wednesday 6/20/07. On Wednesday morning the man arrived at our clinic saying that when he came out of his apartment that morning two out of the three traps had been stolen. (One trap had four kittens inside, the other had two kittens.) The third trap which was left untouched had an adult male cat inside and was brought to our clinic that day and neutered.
On Thursday, 6/21/07 late afternoon Forgotten Felines received a phone call from a resident in the same complex saying that she had been given a kitten that had been set on fire. She wasn’t certain she could properly care for the kitten and was calling FFSC for assistance. Forgotten Felines had helped this person one year prior to get 14 other cats fixed, so we had a pre-existing relationship with “Sara”. When she was questioned about what happened, it came out that the cat had been set on fire in a trap. We put 2 and 2 together and realized that this was one of the kittens that had been snatched the night prior.
On Friday morning, 6/22/07 Sara brought the kitten to FFSC and we immediately got it to one of our vet partners, Animal Hospital of Cotati. A police report was filed with SRPD and they have conducted an investigation. Another report was filed with Sonoma County Animal Care & Control and they too have been investigating the incident. Initially a private FFSC donor had offered a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party or parties involved in this crime. Since that time, the reward has grown to $3000. We have also offered a $100 reward for the return of the 3rd missing trap so it isn’t used again for further crimes of torture.
Kitten Adam, named by his original caretaker, Sara, has a “guarded” prognosis. He is getting round the clock care which includes wound dressings, intravenous fluids and pain medication. He is eating like a champ and responds to scratching and petting around his head. Forgotten Felines is using funds being donated and monies collected to our Fluffy Fund to pay for his care. (The Fluffy Fund is used exclusively for feral cats and kittens that we encounter who need medical care above and beyond spay/neuter.) Both Animal Hospital of Cotati and PetCare Emergency Hospital have and continue to offer Forgotten Felines reduced rates for the services they provide to our organization.
The question has been asked – “Why didn’t you put him to sleep?” The answer is “Because he appears to have a will to live.” If at some point in the future, he or his body appear to give up, so will we. Right now there are so many people sending positive energy and thoughts his way, I can’t imagine that he won’t survive.
On a side note: Sara, the woman who he was initially brought to in the apartment complex (because she is the resident “cat lady&rdquo went throughout the Apple Valley neighborhood over the weekend and collected $120 toward Adam’s care. This is the same neighborhood where this terrible incident occurred. She also spent the day today making and selling snow cones for $1 to neighborhood children and is posting Reward Flyers throughout the complex.
We appreciate your support in the way of healing thoughts for our special little kitten, Adam. I will keep you apprised of updates as they unfold.

Previous Updates Below :
Dear Friends: I know this whole situation is very upsetting, so if you prefer NOT to receive Adam updates, please let me know and I’ll remove your e-mail address. For those of you who want to know……here is the latest.
First of all, I’d like to thank those of you who have made donations to help with the cost of Adam’s care and those who are expressing your care and concern. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Last night (Monday, 6/25/07) Dr. Hinkle at Animal Hospital of Cotati took Adam home to monitor his condition. Her teenage daughter, Samantha, stayed up with him all night. (She finally went to bed at 6:00am) During the night he made attempts to groom himself and play with a cat toy. He continues to respond to petting and even stood up to have a bowel movement. Although we are taking one day at a time, these little signs of normal kitten behavior are encouraging and reinforce our interpretation of Adam’s desire to go on living.
There have been several people calling to offer Adam a home once he has recovered and lots of people expressing their disgust and shock at how someone could do such a horrific act.
The reward has now grown to $6000, and the authorities have been talking to the children who saw the incident occur.
Channel 2 will be featuring the story on the news tonight. We will continue to keep you updated on Adam’s progress and the apprehension of those who committed this crime.
By the way, you can also view Adam updates on our web site.
The woman, Sarah Bowlan, who found these two kittens has been on the phone with me for hours since this happened, i have not shared it with anyone because i was waiting for more information. The following article fails to mention there where two kittens—the other died. It also fails to mention that Sarah is "dying of aides" she called me because she wants to use the rest of her life to help animals and people and the Earth.
i promised Sarah i would make this an issue, it will be one of the few things i continue to do on myspace as i have experienced ONE too many heart-wrenching personal attacks and far too little real-world support. The woman i gave support to in for the last few days in China, of course, had her blog blocked. She expected it— will reprint in its entirey what her blog said as soon as i finish posting this Friend in China "could face firing squad" for speaking out.
Reward grows to $3,000 in SR cruelty case; 5 more feral kittens taken from Santa Rosa, CA Apple Valley complex still missing
By MARTIN ESPINOZA THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
Adam, the black short-hair kitten that was reportedly torched inside a cage in Santa Rosa's Apple Valley neighborhood Wednesday, is struggling for his life at a local animal hospital.
Meanwhile, outrage over the incident continues to build as a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who burned the 2-month-old kitten has tripled to $3,000.
Adam and five other feral kittens that had been trapped by an Apple Valley resident were taken Wednesday from just outside the resident's apartment, where they were being held in two cages.
The kitten, later named Adam by a rescuer, was found burned alive while the other kittens have yet to be located, according to Sonoma County Animal Control officials.
Veterinarians caring for Adam said it was still too early to tell whether he would survive because of the high risk of infection where-ever there is dead skin tissue. The kitten received second- and third-degree burns over 75 percent of his body.
"He's got a long way to go, a lot of skin has got to come off and his tail is probably going to have to be amputated," said Katheryn Hinkle, owner of Animal Hospital of Cotati.
On Monday afternoon, Hinkle and other hospital staff washed Adam's badly burned body with a saline solution and replaced bandages on his wounds. His body and legs shook from pain, said Hinkle.
"So sorry. So sorry," said Hinkle, as she cleaned Adam's wounds.
The kitten is being given a continuous intravenous dose of morphine to lessen his pain. After his bandaging was replaced, hospital staff fed Adam a can of cat food using a tongue depressor.
"That's the home run right there," said Hinkle.
Jennifer Kirchner, executive director of Forgotten Felines, said she hopes the $3,000 reward will encourage people to come forward with information about the crime.
Forgotten Felines, a nonprofit dedicated to the humane care and control of the feral cat population, is paying for the care of the kitten.
Sarah Bowlan, an Apple Valley resident who first treated the kitten immediately after he was burned, said she's collected more than $100 from local residents to help pay for the kitten's medical costs.
Bowlan, who is known as the "Cat Lady," said Monday she was horrified to see how badly Adam had been burned.
"I was in shock. I didn't know whether I should grab him with my hands or a wet towel," said Bowlan. "I picked him up and walked him to the bathroom and turned on the water in the sink. He turned his head and started lapping water from my hand."
"I didn't think he was going to make it until he looked at me in the eye. He wanted to live," said Bowlan, crying.
Two young children at the apartment complex interviewed Monday said they had seen two teenage girls standing on the opposite bank of Paulin Creek, next to a cage. They said they heard a cat crying and a short while later saw something burning.
The children, along with others, said they recovered the kitten and the cage and brought it to the apartment manager.
Sonoma County Animal Control officials said they had not talked to any children but would continue their investigation today.
Hinkle, the Cotati animal hospital owner, said she and other medical staff will treat the kitten as long as there's a chance for his survival, opting not to euthanize the animal.
"Feral kittens are the garbage of the community," she said. "Already, he's got one strike against him. It's not his fault. We want to do our part to make this a better place than that."

Yesterday I reposted a bulletin detailing the monstrous acts of DeShawn Brown against an innocent dog who was named Mercy by her rescuers. Mercy did not survive her ordeal.
The suspect was indicted for dragging Mercy, a pit bull, behind a car, stabbing her multiple times and dousing her with gasoline, then lighting her on fire causing third degree burns over most of her body. Please write and ask that Brown receives the maximum 10 year sentence for his violent crime and for carrying an illegal weapon
DeShawn Brown tortured this poor innocent animal. He should serve the maximum amount of time pernmitted. A dear friend and fellow animal activist (Sheila...) was kind enough to send me the following information, which I will use. Please take a moment of your day to send a short note to the courts system where he is being tried to tell them how you feel about an innocent dog being tortured to death. Deshawn Quatrail Brown __ Reference Docket # F-0686776 TRIAL DATE:AUGUST 06TH, 2007 The case has been assigned to Judge Dan Clancy in Criminal District Court No. 6. If you are interested in writing to Judge Clancy to let him know how Mercy's torture and death have affected you, you may do so at this address:

The trial of DeShawn Brown, who is charged with third-degree felony in the animal cruelty case involving the burned dog Mercy, has been postponed until August 06th,2007.
The trial was scheduled to start Monday, April 23, the one-year anniversary of Mercy’s death. Deshawn Quatrail Brown __ Reference Docket # F-0686776
The 3rd-degree felony indictment is for Cruelty to Animals With the Finding of a Deadly Weapon, an enhanced crime that carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence (minimum 2 years). Brown was originally charged with a State Jail Felony, which carries a maximum of 2 years in prison, so the DA's investigators were able to add an additional charge to the case. I, (Sheila ....) printed out approximately 60+ unsigned copies of a letter to the DA that is prosecuting this case, asking that Deshawn Brown be prosecuted to the fullest degree allowed by law; not only for what he did to Mercy, but also for the safety of all members of society. I was able to get approximately 60+ of these letters individually signed by members of my community & I mailed each seperately to the DA. Largely because of the response the DA received from all over the world, Deshawn Brown's charges were ammended to charges that can carry a much more significant amount of jail time as well as fines. Instead of a 2 year maximum sentence, it is now a 2 year minimum to a 10 year maximum sentence.
A copy of this letter is provided below.
Thank you for your time. Please write to the court. Take a stand for Mercy and all those that have fallen prey to monsters who would torture an animal.
below is a copy of the letter I collected signatures on & mailed to the DA:

Dear District Attorney Hill:
Please accept my comments regarding Deshawn Brown, the Dallas 21-year-old charged with animal cruelty for drenching his 10-month-old pit bull in gasoline and lighting her on fire on April 13, 2006.1 implore the D.A.'s office to pursue maximum felony penalties of two to ten years in jail, plus fines of up to $10,000.1 ask you to ensure Brown undergoes psychological counseling and is barred from possessing, harboring or living alongside animals in any context.
Brown poses a risk to both animals and humans. The dog, discovered near an apartment complex at Preston and Belt Line Roads, suffered burn wounds over 60% oJ her body. Most of her exterior skin layer was gone, replaced by slashes, stab marks, and burned flesh. (The attack happened on April 13th. The dog was found the next da> on April 14th in the woods behind the apartments; still alive, in pain and suffering.)
Dubbed "Mercy" by the Operation Kindness shelter workers in Carrollton who fought to save her, the little brown pit bull mix eventually succumbed (Sunday April 23rd, 2006) to her injuries. While Brown initially claimed the dog "accidentally bumped [the] grill and ignited herself," witnesses relayed a different version of the events leading to her death. One woman told police and animal control officers that a failed attempt to mate Mercy with her dog resulted in Brown kicking his dog repetitively. (And one can only imagine what would have become of the puppies if the two dogs had successfully mated.)
The concerned woman trailed Brown and noticed bloody gashes covering the dog. Another man witnessed Mercy, engulfed in flames, dashing through the apartment parking lot. He later saw Brown, gas can in hand.
Brown is a liar, admitting he fabricated the grill story in an April 17 interview with officials. Brown is a liar and a thug, claiming "two guys he owed money" burned Mercy in retaliation. But more importantly, Brown typifies sociopaths who view their victims as objects. They lack the empathy to see suffering or value in their victims.
Criminologists view the intensity of violent behavior (regardless of the victim's identity) as a precursor to future violence. In fact, the FBI red flags cruelty to animals when profiling murder suspects. Serial killers such as the Boston Strangler, Son of Sam, Jeffrev Dahmer and Ted Bundy practiced on animals before graduating to humans. Dennis Rader, notorious for the Blind-Torture-Kill murders in Wichita, Kansas, confessed to strangling cats and dogs prior to his sadistic spree.
In addition, domestic battery studies show abusers commonly torment or kill companion animals. According to a MSPCA and Northeastern University survey, 70% of animal abusers accumulated one or more unrelated crimes and nearly 40% committed brutal crimes against people. Animal cruelty is also a key trait in the American Psychiatric Association's profile for conduct disorders.
Deshawn Brown exhibits no remorse for the torture of a defenseless dog.
Thank you for recognizing the gravity of this crime and prosecuting this dangerous man to the fullest degree.
Sincerely,

Pit bull doused with gasoline, set on fire Dallas, TX (U
A young pit bull is recovering from animal abuse, which included being dragged, stabbed and doused with chemicals.
The dog was found bleeding and terrified near an apartment complex at Preston Road and Belt Line Road by two young men. The pair dropped off the shaking and terrified dog at the Operation Kindess shelter.
Authorities did not reveal the name of the apartment complex for fear of compromising their case.
Officials at the shelter named the dog Mercy and are crediting the two young men with saving the dog's life.
"It was horrifying," said Jonnie England with Operation Kindness. "One side looks like she'd been drug behind a car. The other side looks like multiple stab wounds."
Investigators are just beginning to look into the abuse but are hoping a person who they know witnessed the abuse will help them out.
This is "one of the worst cases of apparent abuse that we have seen," said England. "The vet thought that she had suffered chemical burns on her body and inside her ears," said England.
Mercy is now in stable condition, but not in the clear.
"The entire top layer of skin is just gone in so many places that the concern is infection setting into those wounds," England said.
The Dallas Police Deparment may soon become involved in investigating the case, which could take several weeks.
Case Updates
The trial of a Dallas man charged with a third-degree felony in an animal cruelty case last April has been postponed until Aug. 6.
DeShann Brown’s trial was scheduled to start Monday, the one-year anniversary of the death of Mercy, a pit bull puppy that had been doused with gasoline and set on fire last year.
Mercy was found huddled in some bushes behind a North Dallas Apartment complex on April 14, 2006. The two men who discovered the dog that day took her to Operation Kindness, a no-kill animal shelter in Carrollton.
The 10-month-old puppy was immediately taken to a veterinarian for treatment but died 10 days later. The veterinarians who tried to save her life determined that the young dog had been doused with gasoline and set on fire.
DeShann Brown, who lived at the complex at Preston and Beltline, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and use of a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony punishable with up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Brown was released on a $250 cash bond and remains out on bail.
Trista Allen, public information officer for the Dallas District Attorney’s office, said Brown’s attorney requested a continuance in the case, moving the trial start date to August. Mercy’s case attracted attention across the United States and in many foreign countries. More than 18,000 people signed an online petition started by a Florida woman urging the strongest punishment possible for her abuser. English singer-songwriter Maria Daines wrote and recorded a song for Mercy that has been posted on numerous internet websites and blogs. An estimated 1,500 people attended a memorial service for the dog.
“We’re very disappointed by this delay,” Operation Kindness executive director Jonnie England said. “It’s been exactly one year since Mercy was tortured and died, and we were so anxious for this trial to get underway on Monday. Now we’ll have to wait even longer before we will, hopefully, see justice served.”
England said she has been contacted by hundreds of people, some from as far away as Houston, who were planning to attend the trial and be on hand to show their support for Mercy. England herself has been called in the case.
Brown is scheduled to make an appearance in open court at a pretrial hearing on June 8. His case is being tried in Criminal District Court No. 6 before Judge Jeanine Howard.
Bryan Mead with Toothacres Pet Care Center places Mercy’s ashes into the ground during last year’s memorial service for the abused dog. An estimated crowd of 1,500 mourners attended the service at Operation Kindness.
Brown is scheduled for trial on April 23, 2007 - the one year anniversary of Mercy's death.

Operation Kindness volunteers, staff and community members have some closure in the death of Mercy, a 10-month-old puppy, after a memorial service and an arrest in the case.
The no-kill shelter held a memorial service for Mercy after receiving a large amount of response about her case. Hundreds of people gathered at Operation Kindness to honor the life of Mercy. A memorial service was held and afterward people passed by her spot placing candles and trinkets. “One of our staff members wrote a poem from Mercy to everyone who supported her,” said Jonnie England, Operation Kindness executive director.
A Denton County man has given police two different versions of how a 10-month-old puppy was burned over 60 percent of her body:
She bumped against a barbecue grill, he told police. Later, he said two men burned her because he owed them money.
Deshann Brown, 21, was arrested shortly after midnight in Corinth, a community in Denton County, and charged with animal cruelty, said Senior Cpl. Jamie Kimbrough, Dallas police spokeswoman.
The 10-month-old puppy, named Mercy, died Sunday despite efforts to save her from extensive injuries. She had been cut, stabbed, doused with gasoline and set afire, police said.
On April 13, witnesses saw Mercy, ablaze, running through the parking lot of a north Dallas apartment complex. The witnesses extinguished the flames by dousing her with beer, police reports said.
The witnesses told police that the dog belonged to Brown, who was questioned a short time later.
He told police "he was attempting to grill on his patio when his dog, 'Brandy' - a pit bull mix - accidentally bumped (the) grill and ignited herself," the reports stated.
In succeeding days, however, witnesses told a much different story to police and animal control officers.
A woman said Brown wanted his dog to mate with hers, but that his dog "would not cooperate." She told Brown to remove his dog and he became angry and repeatedly kicked his dog as they were leaving, the reports said.
The woman followed Brown "at a distance and next observed his dog to have cuts (and) stab wounds."
Another man said saw Brown's dog on fire and running through the parking lot; he later saw Brown carrying a gas can, the reports said.
The dog had burns over 60 percent of her body, and she was turned over to Operation Kindness, a non-profit shelter in Carrollton that tries to find homes for abandoned or abused animals.
Officials interviewed Brown again April 17, and he told them that he lied to them about the grilling incident four days earlier.
Brown then told them that "he owed money to two guys for an Xbox and they had retaliated by burning his dog," the reports said.
Witnesses called the media, accusing Brown of being a torturous thug and complaining that he wasn't swiftly arrested.
Kimbrough said police were working with animal control officers to develop the case against Brown.
She said undercover officers from the North Central Deployment Division obtained a warrant for Brown's arrest and set up surveillance on several North Texas locations he was known to visit.
Included was his mother's home in Corinth. The officers saw him driving from there shortly after midnight Thursday, and they followed him, Kimbrough said.
Patrol officers from the Corinth Police Department stopped Brown for a traffic violation and turned him over to the undercover officers, Kimbrough said.
He was subsequently placed in the Lew Sterrett Justice Center and charged with animal cruelty, a state jail felony punishable by 180 days to two years in jail, plus possible fines up to $10,000. Bail is $50,000, Kimbrough said.
A man police believe is responsible for dousing a 10-month-old pit bull named Mercy with gasoline then setting it on fire was arrested early Thursday morning.
According to police, Deshawn Brown, 21, was visiting a relative in Corinth Wednesday night when police received a tip about his whereabouts.
Brown was arrested after a traffic stop when he left the house, officials said.
He will be charged with cruelty to an animal, which includes cutting, stabbing and burning the dog on April 13.
A memorial is planned for the tortured pup at 10 a.m. Saturday at Operation Kindness, the Carrollton animal shelter that took in the puppy after she was rescued.
The dog died Sunday at a veterinary clinic where she received treatment for the stab wounds and burns that covered 60 percent of her body.
Mercy died Sunday evening about 9:30 p.m. at the veterinary clinic where she was being treated. Doctors said Mercy showed some improvement Saturday, but her condition started to deteriorate Sunday afternoon. She was given a plasma transfusion, but shortly afterward her heart--weakened by burns over 60% over her body--stopped beating. The young pit-bull mix was rescued Friday, April 14, by a Dallas man who saw her in the wooded area behind apartments in Far North Dallas.
The case is being investigated by Dallas Animal Services' Cruelty Division and the Dallas Police Department.
Anyone with information should call 3-1-1 or Dallas Animal Services at 214-671-0246.
Mercy, the name given the dog by Operation Kindness volunteers, was discovered by a Dallas man as she was huddled in a wooded area behind an apartment complex near Belt Line and Preston in North Dallas. The dog had been badly injured and was bleeding. Veterinarians determined Mercy had been doused with gasoline and then lit on fire.
After receiving tips from residents in the area where Mercy was found the case was turned over to Dallas Animal Services’ cruelty investigators. Now the cruelty investigators will begin talking with the residents to determine what happened to the dog. “When we interview we will find out whether torture was involved or not,” said Dallas Animal Services Manager Kent Robertson. “Once we gather the facts and determine the credibilty we can possible turn it over to a district attorney.” If it is determined that torture was involved the person or persons responsible can face state jail time for a length determined by a state judge, Robertson said. If torture was not involved the crime would be a misdeameanor with up to a year of jail time and a fine up to $1,000, he said.
“We hope that anyone with information that might be pertinent will come forward and help us find some justice for Mercy,” England said. To get Mercy through the holiday weekend she was taken to a nearby veterinarian who treated her multiple wounds, kept her on pain medication, IV fluids and antibiotics. For more intensive treatment Mercy was taken to a surgical specialist on April 17, 2006. When volunteers and the veterinarian first saw Mercy they thought she had chemical burns and had been stabbed. “We’re committed to finding the person who tortured and tried to kill this gentle and sweet-natured young dog,” England said. On April 18, 2006, Mercy had to undergo surgery to remove the ends of her ears, which had some of the worst damage. Although Mercy has already been through a lot she still has to go through a long, painful debridement process, England said. During this time veterinarians will scrape away dead skin in order for new skin underneath to grow. This time is important for the dog as the risk of infection is great, England said. The recovery period should be about two or three months as long as there are no complications.
Anyone with information regarding Mercy’s case should call 311 in Dallas or Operation Kindness at 972-418-PAWS. A fund has been established to help pa for Mercy’s treatment and long-term care. Donations can be sent to Operation Kindness, Attn: For Mercy’s Sake, 3201 Earhart Drive, Carrollton, TX 75006. Secure online donations can be made at www.operationkindness.org.
The Humane Society of Yuma is seeking tips leading to the arrest of the person responsible in the torture and death of a dog near Somerton last week.
A Border Patrol agent found the body of the young female tan shepherd mix with bailing wire tied around her neck on a canal bank at County 10-1/2 Street and Avenue G on Friday, the humane society said.

We need your help to protect animals! Chi Chi was a young Schnauzer mix who lost her life as a result of heinous cruelty.
Last month, I contacted you about a young Schnauzer mix named Chi Chi who lost her life as a result of heinous cruelty. I hope you will support the Humane Society of Missouri's Chi Chi Fund, created in Chi Chi's memory to help combat animal cruelty. Background: Chi Chi's Story Chi Chi was shot 9 times, burned over 75% of her body, and inflicted with a broken jaw and other fractures. As is too often the case, we suspect that Chi Chi's abuse was related to violence against people.
Your donation to the Chi Chi Fund will support our proactive efforts to protect other animals from enduring the abuse that Chi Chi suffered.
Please read below or visit our website for information about Chi Chi and our efforts to fight animal cruelty. Then, please help us with a donation to the Chi Chi Fund today.
Your gift can help us save lives.
Sincerely,
Kathryn W. Warnick, President
Our Response: The Chi Chi Fund
The Humane Society of Missouri is working with law enforcement to investigate the case and bring Chi Chi's abuser to justice. But getting involved in a case after the animal has already lost her life is just not enough.
The Chi Chi Fund supports our comprehensive, proactive efforts to fight animal cruelty.
Our Humane Officers work statewide to investigate animal abuse and intervene before it costs animals their lives. Once rescued, animals are given a second chance through loving, expert care at the Humane Society's veterinary and adoption centers.
We are also educating community members - police officers, social workers, teachers, and others - about the importance of recognizing animal neglect and abuse.
We Need Your Help
Please visit www.hsmo.org/chichi to learn about the programs supported by the Chi Chi Fund or to report animal abuse. Then, please honor Chi Chi's memory with a generous gift.
