Focus: Environment
Action Request: Celebration
Location: United States

10:10:10-A global day of Doing, Sunday Oct. 10, 2010 What is it? 10:10 has joined forces with international campaign group 350 to co-ordinate 10:10:10 – the biggest-ever day of positive action on climate change on Sunday, 10th October, 2010. Together we can trigger a tidal wave of emissions reductions, and send a powerful message to world leaders that we are already two steps ahead: busy cutting carbon in local communities, businesses and organizations on every continent. What's planned? Thousands of events are planned around the world: in Croatia and Russia there are 10,000 schools planting trees; in the Netherlands there's a carbon-cutting TV telethon; in Japan there are sumo wrestlers cycling to training in Japan; in India and The Maldives there are solar installations going up on the homes of world leaders... What can I do? On 10:10:10 you could... Organise a carrotmob and persuade a local business to go green Unveil your brand new video conferencing facilities, which will mean at least less 10% flying! Install a solar water panel, wind turbine or PV array on your school or sports club or place of worship Recruit a team of volunteers to fit free insulation into every loft in the neighbourhood Launch a bike-to-work/school incentive scheme or run a bike-repair workshop Ceremoniously cut the ribbon to your newly installed office water fountain (so long long-distance bottled water!) Start up a lift-share scheme or car-pool with your friends Hold a swap-shop event where people swap second hand clothes, furniture and books, instead of buying new Launch a new low-carbon local seasonal dish in your restaurant or canteen, or start up Meat-Free Mondays Meet up to celebrate the digging of a community / school vegetable patch to grow food locally Still stuck? Find out what's planned near you or check out these ideas from 10:10 UK! What's next? 1.Tell us what you're up to, and register large events here. 2.Sign up to 10:10 if you haven't already 3.And add your name to this public pressure campaign to get solar panels installed on the White House and other world leader houses in time for 10:10:10!

Why did I write this? Why do I ask you to sign it?....................I felt the need. For most of my life I have been following some of the better teachings my mother had to offer, such as treating the planet with respect. Don't throw trash on the ground. Don't just leave the light on all over the house. Don't waste food or water. I honestly, at least as a kid, thought that everyone did these same things! I learned to recycle in school, and carried that with me. I even keep a box of recycling under my desk at work to this day! The problem is, in my adulthood, I've realized how few people around me make any of those same efforts, and that includes the ones that are easy, like using a recycling bin at home. That is heartbreaking at best, and downright shameful at worst! What purpose can being lazy with the environment serve? What possible gain is there in pointing fingers and ducking the blame, when people are starving, when the global temperature is at the precipice, and when CO2 is climbing, and climbing as if it were the national debt! There are groups out there who spend their time educating and trying to convince people to cooperate with the effort, and personal initiatives and efforts are VERY important to the cause. With that being said though, there are too many corporations, cities, counties, and COUNTRIES who are too busy to do anything more than present token efforts and spout pretty words about the environment, and climate change, and the science that lead them to it. Pretty words don't make floods evaporate. Pretty words don't dissipate a hurricane. Pretty words don't pull clouds of CO2 out of the upper atmosphere. Pretty words certainly don't make polar ice caps grow, and glaciers reappear. Words are useless when there is not effort made to stand up for them. Governments declare war on everything; the war on terror, the war on drugs, the war in Iraq. Humans LOVE that word; war, because it makes a statement! It says---HERE I AM, AND THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME!!! Even when a ‘war’ is not altruistic, or of humanitarian importance, calling it WAR still makes a bold statement about the logic (or even lack of same) involved. Where is the war on pollution? Where is the war on CO2 emissions? Where is the war on animal, or planetary abuse? What we’ve done to the planet is awful, and most of us know it, and yet few of us are making an effort to reverse it. That is what this petition is about. It is about asking those who should feel responsible to stand up and accept the job of cleaning it up! It is about the global population to say “ENOUGH! You have to stop it! Reduce it! Replace it! And, not at further cost of the environment” I am asking our US government and military to please step up and take responsibility, proactively, so that we really can say “We did everything we could possibly do.” Please read my petition and consider if you’re on board. I am opening this up globally. The US has a military presence all over the globe, which means that we are causing damage to the environments of other countries as well, and we should be completely willing to combat the emissions we cause, for the good of all creatures, and the planet itself. If you’d like to participate in this effort, please see the links below. The first one will lead to the C2NN post so you can view the comments of other care2 members. The second one is the direct link to the petition itself. http://www.care2.com/news/member/813671230/2073762 http://www.thepetitionsite.com/4/what-is-the-co2-cost-of-war/

Dive Beneath

Mangled linens twisted round me
as if hands, I FEEL HANDS upon my flesh.
Rippled edges of the world before me,
why can’t I see you…see clearly that
which you dangle before my eyes?
Running down this unfamiliar corridor
and yet I know now what it is I search.
Open door, silent strangled screaming
and somehow I know I’m not here.

I cry out your name, cry out to anyone
and yet I know that no one can come.
Terror, unbecoming, no sound escapes.
Peeking beyond the edge of the curtain...
falling off the ledge of existence and
know, in landing, I’ll never wake from this.
Membrane cushion, I sink through skin
into the grey beyond, and deeper down,
down, down, into the pit...tunnel vision
.

I see dawn approaching and I wander forth
in search of comfort, security it would offer.
Centre of the clouds, I’ve wandered into
these heavens, and beyond lay darkness.
Pool of chaos, engulfing me, erasing me,
yet remains my inward consciousness.
Single gossamer thread remains between.
I am of this, this thickened intangibility.
I am not of this, having left behind my skin.

The vehicle of my existence knows not
what horrors remain inside that vortex.
That coiling ribbon, slender line between
the lucid and those detachably deranged.
I walk among two fields of vision, pulled
and pushed by each, and each again; again.
If closed these portals lead to everywhere,
and when open they lead only here…to this.
I must choose which path, and choosing end.

Endless Thankless

Justify yourself, selfish, self-centred swine!
Unknown; nameless; no one; nothing;
quantify what you’ve offered unto the “all”!
Tiny doppelgangers wear your sneering face,
all milling round you at waist height?
Do you not see those gears, how they’re
grinding just beneath the delicate surface,
mimicking each harshness, each ugliness?
Pity for them, I harbour sadness as I trace,
ever forward, their lot on this coil.
You blind them quickly so that when
choice is proffered, quickly would it fade.
I see! You feel accomplished loosing
devils, DEMONS upon this fragile soil.
And what of them then, speculations…
or all those that would multiply thereafter?
Status quo; you bequeath your mother
one hundred further generations’ filth
laid out in line then, in your stead.
How dare you, as you dared presumed
too much in your complex, whilst
with permissions lacking, did you rely
upon the premise of your own existence.
As this world would cast you onward,
cast, too this light; harsh reality upon you,
have I spat upon the ground at your feet.
Mother bestowed you wondrous treasure;
nature, wisdom, creation of the blank slate,
and gave you nothing to her, but your ego;
in return, no worthy gift other than these--
thankless contributions of your SELF!

Tu eres una Mariposa

briefly glimpsed as you shape shift.
barely visible, the tiny changes in
your colour, your poise, your presence.
ever onward, never linger, never giving
anything so much as the time of day.
you wander in, out, in, out and would
never think to consider the world beyond;
beyond the fragile borders of your flesh.
maybe once, but once and ne’er thereafter.
why then, be so much significance assigned?
reminder of forgotten ghosts, worlds, lives?
vicariously to ride upon your simple wing?
not so; yet still I contemplate, ponder that
which would be curious, were it not yours.
were you not there to flit, to flicker between
rows of stones and flowers, were I not allowed
to remain a silent witness, sideline passenger;
questionably madness, disinterest in the whole.
such a tiny thing, but painful when absent
and still so painful be it to observe you, still
silently standing by, never involved, invisible.
truth is often mistakable depending on where
you are positioned in the moment of said sight.
with that comes a question, begging to be decried.
is it truly your fickle nature, or is it mine?

Of Flames and Flowers

(as originally written on January 3rd, 2008)

What earth wouldst I inherit;
the meekness of the spirit,
wagered spoils of treachery,
the salvation of the weak from
that which all their longing
proves both farce and false?
What ‘heart’s desire’ comes?
Not always, nor often, nor fairly.
Burning passion of dying hearts
will in times of misery, extinguish.
No ONE, nor all, gains fruition
from their fearful, tiring fury.
No one shall always solace
in result, for flames may just
burn flesh or spirit, hence
such meekness at its birth!
Flames make not, wanting fools,
though the lesson may be both
poisoned cruelty or lesson proved.
Lessons are the heart of structure
in what is to be a life itself.
Comes then hope and happiness
to those both worthy and kindly
of these black or yellow gifts.
Baskets of eggs may topple.
Taken from this one discards baskets,
then to rise, to use both hands.
There is a flower here!
One who would not see it
would purchase another basket.
